Give Nokia some time they will make 5800 as the best phone you have ever owned

[ Edited ]

I have been seeing cribbing about issues with Nokia 5800. Well first of all let me tell you something, when 5800 was released, everywhere on the internet people were complaining about the fact that camera didn't have geotagging. Nokia made available in the firmware update. Whatsmore, they have already declared that the new Nokia messaging service will be supported on 5800 from May. People Nokia is selling a new phone by projecting this service as "THE FEATURE" of the phone(the Nokia E75). So for them to support this on 5800, which is not a business phone, just shows how much they care about the customers.

By the way it took Apple about 3 years to slove some basic issues like

1. Support for forwarding msgs.

2. Deleting multiple text msgs.

3. Support for MMS.

4. Support for bluetooth file transfer to name a few.

You don't have to give Nokia 3 years, give them another 6 months they will make sure that 5800 is one of the best fones you have ever owned.

Also Nokia also working to improve coolness factor on the phone with apps like the new photo browser, handwriting calculator etc.

So just give them time.

Re: Give Nokia some time they will make 5800 as the best phone you have ever owned

Yeah I think it eventually will be one of the best....

I think this phone is more of a pre launch or prototype for the N97...it will definitely support every application the N97 does only difference that will remain is camera and ngage support I guess.....or any other new feature the N97 may have

After a few updates I think 5800 will be a true value for money phone. A jack of all trades like the N97

Re: Give Nokia some time they will make 5800 as the best phone you have ever owned

I think that some people would rather have a relatively limited featureset with few or no bugs (iPhone) rather than a really comprehensive featureset and a phone that crashes or misbehaves (5800). So I doubt what you say is going to be any consolation to anyone who's really annoyed by the 5800's bugs.

No Geotag

I just bought this phone from O2 and cannot geotag - the main reason  bought it.  The firmware is V11 and cannot update it to V20 which supports geodata.  After being given the runaround by O2 who said it was a Nokia problem Nokia Data respon

I hope all is well with you. With regard to your email, please note that the software version 20.0.012 for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic includes "Geo-tagging", enabling you to add location information to your pictures.

However, the latest software version for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic may not be available for download from our website for your specific phone variant. Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants support the latest Nokia device firmware.

Software versions for a specific Nokia phone may also depend on network operator variants as Nokia phones distributed by a network operator's sales channel are commonly pre-installed with software configured to ensure compatibility with the respective network services. Operator-branded Nokia devices may also be updated with the latest software version that has been approved by the operator and the updates for individual variants may be available at different times. Note that not all operators may have approved the latest software available.

They suggested contacting the supplier technicians who may be able to help,  The O2 shop here in Galway finally got an answer from O2,  They do not support geotag on the N5800 and have no plans to  It would be nice if I had discovered that before I bought the phone as I had assumed that there would not be a problem updating the firmware. Of course asking the O2 sales people about geotagging when buying the phone brought a glazed look and they looked up the phone's capability on http://www.gsmarena.com/ where it correctly says that geotagging is supported, but not by O2 though!

Re: No Geotag

But this is more of a problem because of O2 not because of Nokia...your complaint should be on O2's website

Re: No Geotag

All the Nseries devices you've owned have moving parts. The N75 is a clamshell and the N95 and N85 are slidephones.

The 5800XM is a candybar with no moving parts. The build is therefore pretty solid with no creaky parts or anything like that.

Some people have complained about the casing not being held as solidly in place as it should at the top-right of the phone and indeed, even on mine, you can see that there's just a fraction of a millimetre of play there. It's nothing alarming and it doesn't bother me in the least.

Re: No Geotag

None yet, but it can take a while to manifest itself.

This said, phones manufactured as from February some time were already fitted with the new earpiece that didn't have the fault. I bought my phone direct from Nokia retail only a week ago so I reckon it's a fairly safe assumption that it was manufactured with a non-problematic earpiece

Re: Give Nokia some time they will make 5800 as the best phone you have ever owned

This phone definitely has some issues. It has frozen on me more often than I would like and there are some other quirks I wish were different.

To me though, this is still a fantastic phone! It has all the structure of a smartphone and as pointed out above, there needs to be time in the field to fix things.

This phone will be better once Ovi opens as the apps will be trust worthy and easy to find - now I search forums on my own and have a google news alert set up for it. Ugh!

Also, the fact that this is NOT an iPhone and I am not subject to the ever-changing and ever-controlling whims of Apple/Steve Jobs is what is important to me.

GIVING SOME TIME ???

I don´t have to give anything to Nokia besides the price I payed for the phone !!!!!

Research, Development and Bugfixing should be afforded with THEIR time, not ours !!!!

Guys, Didn´t we live so many years under the effects of Billl Gate´s motto "Good enough software" ?

Please, please !!!  Dont´t validate the making and selling of "Good enough cellphones" to unaware people like us !!!!

Alberto

Nokia - "Connecting people" making them to support themselves after wasting USD800+ on a inflatable dinghy "Flagship" :-(

PS: DON'T EDIT MY SIGNATURE PLEASE !!!

I hate nokia 5800. Especially the us version is a mess. I can not even install garmin xt which works on european version. I would love to get my money back.

Anyway this is my last nokia ever.

Re: No Geotag

That my post should be on the O2 website is a fair comment.  However, the problem regarding Geotaging and the O2 website is that if you Google "Nokia 5800 geotag" (or similar), as a potential customer for the phone, one of the few URLs that result is here on the manufacturer's website.  Regrettably, if I search my native O2.ie forums for geodata there are no results at all.  Therefore I have placed this post on a site where a potential customer for the phone (such as I) will find it and therefore not be lulled into buying a phone that is unsuitable for his/her needs due to the impairment of the phones ability by the retailer.

Equally, by placing information regarding impairment of the phone's features on the manufacturer's website advises and encourages the both retailer and manufacturer to meet the needs of the customer.  Unfortunately, the reality is that the specifications of the phone given on the retailer's website are sparse and the technical knowledge of salespersons similar - as regards to geotagging none at all.  Therefore the customer must look elsewhere for information on non-mainstream needs.

The whole process could be avoided if Nokia would release a decent product in the first place (being number one in the mobile phone market should give them that expertise)... you don't by a car full of issues and be happy if you can go every 6 months to the garage to get a number of them fixed.

+1.

Completely agree with you on that.

I am impressed with the hardware that Nokia managed to cram into the 5800 and at the same time completed disappointed with the software they the built on top of it.

Its high time that they work on the OS and bring it to the class of the hardware that the build the phone with.

Not many of us bought the phone to compare it with the iPhone and even less care what the iphone doesnt do or does, the fact of the matter is that this phone could have been far better than it is now and thats with what? back to back firmware releases? i appreciate that Nokia is trying to patch some of the flaws but post production is not the time for it.
