First time with a Smartphone

Hi All!

Recently I have seen a lot of posts asking which phone is better model x or model y. The majority of these posts are asking people to compare a series 60 phone to a series 40 phone as they are considering making the switch.

To help make the decision easier is there anyone out there who has also made the step up from a series 40 phone to a series 60 phone? It would be great if you could share your story here.

Series 60 phones are very different to series 40 phones and can do a lot more, but for some people a series 60 phone may not be the right choice. So, if you have made the move why dont you let us all know how you got on?

If you would like further info on Series 60 phones take a look here: Series 60 info

For more info on Series 40 phones take a look here: Series 40 info

For a complete list of all out phones out now and coming soon, take a look here: Nokia phones info

Cheers

Re: First time with a Smartphone

i used to use a 6230 but decided to get a 6680 when it came to upgrade.

the 6230 was fine for my needs, but the 6680 was a newer phone and more uptodate. i really like the extra features you get with this type of phone, especially the calendar etc. i also like the ability to install applications to the phone, so if you find there is a feature missing or an extra one you wouldl ike to have you can normally find it somewhere on the internet for sale. some stuff is even free, i was able to get a copy of putty installed on this and working over GPRS!

Re: First time with a Smartphone

i have had tonnes of nokia phones, the one i have right now is the 3250. i have used both series 40 and 60 in the past, and to be honest i am a little dissapointed with the 3250 as it is not a 3g phone.

however, i have always found series 40 phones to be dead easy to use when you get a series 60 phone it can be a little daunting. i like the way nokia has changed the menu structure in both series so they now look very similar, so you wont get lost straight away.

series 60 on the other hand are so extensible, you can change practically everything about the phone even down to the way sms is handled with some applications.

i would say, if you want an easy to use phone and dont need things like email, calendar etc get a series 40 phone, but if you want a phone you can play around with and install loads of apps etc get a series 60 phone.

Re: First time with a Smartphone

The last s40 phone I used was the 7250 way back in 2002, then got my first s60 (7650). After that I've had a 3660, 6630 and now a 6680 and there's no way I'll ever get a s40 anymore.

The thing I like the most is the multi-tasking so I can send sms's or check my calendar or phonebook while I'm in a call. (I suppose the latest s40 phones still don't support this..?)

The huge amount of available apps and the big screen don't hurt either.

It did take some time to get used to s60. It took me a while to realise that pressing the red end call key leaves the app running in the background so I was always out of memory. And the "special" PC Suite for 7650 was appalling.

Someone once said on another forum that Nokia has never realized that "s40 is a nice phone ui but s60 is a way of life" - so Nokia has never really told their customers about the benefits of s60. Like when a new phone comes out, it's really hard to find out which series it is (ok it's mentioned somewhere in the specs but it always seems to be just a minor detail to Nokia, not a core feature that needs to be promoted.) So I bet there's a lot of people who are totally lost with their first s60.

Re: First time with a Smartphone

i think i agree with the other posts so far, when i first moved to series 60 phones i was astounded by the level of adaptability offered. the first series 60 phone i saw was the 6600, i wasnt so impressed with it at them time (it was a bit ugly) and never saw its pc suite, which i believe was also seperate. but the ability to configure emails was what snagged me. so as soon as i could i ditched the series 40 phone i had and moved to a 6680 then to a n90.

i think the greatest asset to a series 60 phone is this; if you have enough imagination then you can do pretty much anything with the phone - its just that customisable.

i will say tho, the menu can be a bit daunting at first if you make the switch. one of the great things about series 40 is that the menu is always the same. i notice they have changed the menu some what recently to make them more the same, but series 60 menus are not as good. things will change location in them depending on the phone - but more or less everything is there still.

the only thing i dont do with my n90 is use it enough!!!

Re: First time with a Smartphone

A lot of my mates were put off with early s60 handsets due to the number of button presses it took to start something e.g. write a txt. Thankfully this has now been made much easier by allowing customisation of the joypad to any feature. The Menu's have been regrouped on s60 handsets as well over the last few years which does make them a lot easier to pick up and and get on with compared to early s60 handsets.

Still think if you want a handset for talking and texting you're better off with s40. Soon as you want to do anything more you're better off with s60 e.g. java email client is awful on s40 and they cannot handle typical office attachments.

Re: First time with a Smartphone

i would totally agree on this, s40 is much better if you just need a phone to be a phone.

i guess nokia listened well when they introduced active standby :smileyhappy:

Re: First time with a Smartphone

i had a 7250 and stepped up to my 1st 60 series, a 6600. the size of the screen, the quality of the pictures (then) and the ease of use were amazing. iv since had a 6630 (to upgrade to mp3), 6680 and now my n70. i disagree about the menu being daunting 1st time. i sold my old 6600 to a friend of mine who's a complete techno-phobe and after i showed him how simple it was to use (2mins!) he loved it, to the point of buying my 6630 when i upgraded again. i think theyre the simplest, easiest and best phones to use. iv got hundreds of pics, vidz, applications and games on mine on a 1gb memory card. put simply, its amazing
