Don't you have the following ?
When an existing Contact is open--Options-->Edit-->Edit Lable...
(Do not own an N8 hence do not know...)

It is somewhat funny... the details field may not be available, but you can add it.
I will try to translate from German to English:
Open contact, then "option" "edit". Here you may not see details.
Then again "options", and there is an option to "add a detail", you can then select many many different fields and enter some informations.
This is how it works on my N97mini...

IMO, just stick with the standard tags becuase if you sync, it doesnt sync what you called them and in some cases will just omit that data.
also, if you have to restore your device or swap to another device, you will have to redo all the tags over again anyway!
i stopped doing tag naming towards the end of my 9500 usage time, because having almost 1100 contacts....can be quite cumbersom....now, that being said, if you only have 5...then go at it!

No, there isn't any edit label option.
That's too bad Nokia omit this feature on new symbian. It was one of my favorite features on Nokia that is not available on other platforms.

In sync u r right but u still can get the contacts with edited label if get em back from ur back up files

This edit label function is very useful one omitting it makes nokia just like other brands available in market i never ever thought of buying anything else just because of this functionality but with this feature gone i may look around on other brands as well

Sorry, really can't get your point.
I guess almost everybody has to sync to .....Outlook, Google, yahoo.....Just to name a few.
If you edit your labels, all your sync will be mixed up, as above already mentioned.
If you bought the N8 just because you could edit details in your contacts, may be another phone is the right one.
It is just the other way around. We need more standards to make the real IT user's life easier across all platforms. Think about this.

What i meant was that for many like me editing label is an important function so instead of jst sync we could also backup the contacts and when we restore from a backup we get back the contacts with the edited labesl as before so no need to again editing labels

I am with the users who are in favour of 'Editing Labels' option.. Users who use the sync and feel this is dangerous NEED NOT edit the labels but for other users who only use Back-up function and use the option MORE EFFECTIVELY as some have mentioned... let them have this available...
so its neither a fault of the iPhone, nor of Nokia N8 but a feature MISSING on Nokia N8.

It was great to find this discussion after realizing loss of this ability with the N8. I see both sides. I do miss this function as there are so many types of contacts associated with each entry.
