E61 Questions

Hi, I am new to these forums so if this is posted in the wrong place or any of my points have been answered elsewhere in these forums I apologise. I have spent many hours over the last few of days trying find answers before making this post.

I am currently evaluating an E61 and although in general I am very impressed I do have several reservations/issues/niggles/questions.

I only have a few days left to make a decision as to whether I keep this phone so any comments to any of my points/questions would be very much appreciated.

1) Bluetooth - Every time my BT headset (Jabra 250) connects the phone wants a 'Voice Tag’, not receiving a voice command it then seems to randomly select an entry from my contacts and proceeds to dial that number. From searching the forums this is also an issue with the N70 & N80. Is there any way I can stop this from happening?

2) WiFi - The E61 connects to my wireless router without any problems allowing me to browse the internet without running up huge data transfer bills. This is great but if I am at home/work I am going to use my PC or laptop to browse the internet. What I really want is to be able to browse my home/work network, connect to network shares, etc. Also is it possible to print to a network printer via WiFi?

3) ActiveX - I currently use an i-Mate Jam to connect via a web browser to a Win2k3 server allowing remote desktop connections to any PC or Server on the network. When I try to use this feature from the web browser on the E61 I receive an error stating that I need to enable the installation of an activeX control, is this possible? If not is there a Remote Desktop Connection client or similar application (e.g. VNC) for the E61.

4) Data Cable - Why doesn't the supplied data cable also charge the phones battery? I can buy a suitable cable (CA-70) from Expansys for the same price as the Nokia shop quotes for the supplied cable (I cannot find the CA-70 in Nokia shop). Is this just a cynical ploy from Nokia to extract another £25 from me?

5) Certificates - When I access my Exchange 2k3 server using Outlook Mobile Access (OMA) I receive a message stating that the site has sent an untrusted certificate, I use a self signed certificate. How do I get the E61 to install/trust the certificate so that I don't keep getting this irritating message?

6) PC Suite - When I use the Install Applications feature the 'My Phone' section shows a message saying, "The contents of the currently selected phone model cannot be shown by this application". Why? Also is it ever going to be possible to use PC Suite via a WiFi connection? (I am using PC Suite version 6.81.13.0).

7) VPN - If I can't browse the network, connect to network shares, make a remote desktop connection, etc, what is the real point of being able to make a VPN connection?

8) User Guide - Is there a definitive/detailed user guide available? The one supplied is adequate at most and the FAQ section on Nokia's site is not the best. How about this for a useless answer to an intelligent question -

Q: Is it possible to manually set up TCP/IP e-mail TSL and SSL ports in my Nokia device?

A: Yes, it is.

I came across this question and answer whilst searching for information specifcally about the E61 so why not tell me how to do it?

9) *# Codes - After searching through literally thousands of posts in these forums over the last couple of days I came across several useful *# codes. Some I remembered to make a note of others I didn't. Is there a list of these codes available?

10) Battery Meter - The battery meter (top right corner of the screen) does not work, it only updates itself to reflect the current battery state after the phone has been switched off and back on again. Is there a fix for this? Knowing the amount of battery life available is a pretty basic but important function.

11) Software - I know that the E61 is still a fairly new model and so the amount of available software is still limited. Where is the best place to find out what compatible software is out there?

I noted the following post by Karim

"There are some FAQ's on our site right now for each phone. Some of them are really good, the E61 FAQ in particular".

Where is this FAQ, I have tried searching for it.

Sorry for the length of this post but as I mentioned I only have a few days left to evaluate this phone and would be grateful for any advice.

Many thanks.

Re: E61 Questions

I can answer a couple of your questions:

1. While I have not experienced the same problem as you I did have a Jabra BT200 that at first connected to my E60 and then, after about a week, would not connect. I was never able to resolve this issue and bought a new Jabra Bt500 that works great. I also cannot setup a serial connection to my PDA although this service is supposed to be supported. The Bluetooth implementation on the E series phones appears to be a little flaky, I'm hoping that the upcoming firmware update resolves this issue.

2. Regarding network shares, I use a free service called Avvenu (search for Avvenu with Google). It works great.

3. Regarding remote access, I have not been able to get this to work either.

9. There is a good list of *# codes at the My-Symbian.com forums site.

10. The battery meter issue is a bug that affects some phones. If yours is affected take it back for replacement.

11. Again the My-Symbian.com site has a good list of software for the E series phones.

Re: E61 Questions

Hi Mark, thanks for the response.

Regarding Bluetooth, I have been using my Jabra 250 with the E61 for five days now without any connection problems. In fact it works better than on my i-mate Jam. I can even listen to music through the Jabra, something I could never get working on the Jam. The only problem I have is that it always tries to dial a number when it first connects.

I have come across systems similar to Avvenu in the past, my biggest concern has always been security although I may look into this further. Using one of these services means that even if I am connected to my wireless network directly, I then have to connect to an internet server to access files that are already on the network that I am connected to. :smileysad:

Remote Desktop is one of the most useful tools that I use so if anyone out there knows of a client that will work on an E61, please let me know.

I have had a quick look at my-symbian.com, will check it out properly later this evening when I have a bit more time.

Bizarrely the battery meter suddenly started working this morning. I did not do anything to the phone it just started working. Obviously though I don't have a great deal of confidence in it, how long before it just stops working again?

Cheers

Re: E61 Questions

Hi jlparsons,

I have been having the same problem with my Jabra 250v and Nokia N70.
Everytime the handsfree connects to the phone it asks for a voice tag, and even though I'm not speaking it gets random noise and dials random contacts, something quite annoying.
Fot the time being the only solution I have found is to press once again the connection button (the one with the phone icon) of the handsfree - right when it starts to wait for a voice tag - so that it will stop the voice call.

However there has to be a permanent solution for this.

I hope someone from Nokia could help us on this.

regards

I'm not sure what kind remote desktop you need but j2me VNC should work fine on the E61, I didn't try it yet, but I'll. You could download it from here:
http://j2mevnc.sourceforge.net/

I use ssh and client for Symbian putty it works great, it's enough for me.

Ioannis

Thanks for the input.

Obviously you can cancel the call before it connects but this is a real pain if you have the keypad lock on and/or are driving at the time.

Lets hope somebody out there (are you listening Nokia) can come up with a solution.

I think this is exactly what I am looking for. Unfortunately I have not yet managed to get it working, the connection always times out. I am hoping that this is just a cofiguration problem and will let you know how I get on.

I have been trialing TSMobile from shapeservices.com, it does the job albeit a bit clunkily. If I can't get VNC to work I will just have to bite the bullet and pay the $35 for a license.
