I have had this phone for about 8 months and it has always showed me who in my contact list is sending me a text message. It has only shown the phone number if the person texting me is not in my contact list.
A few days ago, it started showing me only the number that sent the text message. I have no idea why it started this, maybe some wrong buttons got pushed while I was carrying it around in my pocket? It doesn't always lock when I close the phone, and sometimes I don't notice it when I slide the phone into my pocket.
I've tried adding the number to my contact list, and it adds it just fine, but the next time I get a text from that number, only the number shows up again.
This is quite frustrating, and I would like to get if fixed, does anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do to correct this?
Old messages from before this started happening still show the names.
I haven't had it connected to my computer since the phone was new and as far as I know, it hasn't done any software upgrades or anything like that.

The usual cause of this problem is duplicate entries, if a number is attatched to more than one name it doesn't know who it is, so just shows number, check out User Search at top of screen, there are many threads on this subject. Also check the memory in use in messaging.
Good Luck

Thanks.
I did check out user search and in fact it came up with the same suggestion about the contact list being duplicated. Mine is not. I do not have one single duplication and as I stated, this all worked perfectly until just a few days ago when it bizarrely started doing this. Furthermore, the old text messages in the inbox from before, still show the names of the people that now show up as just a phone number. Right now it does it for virtually every number that I get a text from. This is not a hot or miss thing where sometimes I get a name and sometimes I get a number, I only get numbers.

Hi,
Does the phone show the proper names when you make / get calls??

Edit the contacts, and enter the phone number with the international dial-code prefixed (like, +44123456789, +910123456789, +9612345678, etc.)
Your existing texts will not get updated, but the new ones will show the contact name.
The issue is caused by the way the network sends the caller id to the phone

all of my numbers are already entered that way, since I travel around Europe some I have always done that. Most of my calls come from within Sweden though, but they are almost all entered with +4670*******. Not all of them of course, because sometimes I just enter them through the add contact feature after they have called me.
The number that shows up instead of the contact name is written that way as well. +4676******* for example.

Move all your contacts from SIM card to phone, leave the SIM card to be empty, restart the phone and advise someone to do a test call.
Please post ure results. TQ

How do I do that?
How do I check to see if my contacts are on my sim card or my phone memory?

Menu Path Guide
--> Settings -> Contacts to Display -> SIM Memory / Phone Memory
You will be either to mark all the contacts and/or bulk (mass) copy / move the contacts.

I don't have a contacts to display option in my settings menu, nor anywhere else. It occurred to me from the other fellows post, that maybe I should try to shut off the phone and turn it back on (I never turn it off generally) so I did. Now it shows nothing but phone numbers when people call me also. I hate to think I am going to have to scrap this phone, but this is totally unacceptable.
So I'd still like to know how to check if my contact list is on my sim card or in my phone.

What the post above meant is,
Open Contacts, Go to Options -> Settings -> Contacts to Display -> SIM Memory / Phone memory. But I'm not very sure of this sequence (Never had an N85 myself).
I would suggest that you restore factory settings. Enter *#7870# at the stand-by screen, enter the lock code when prompted, default is 12345.
You said you haven't done any software updates. It's wise to run the latest software available. Either use FOTA, or NSU to update the phone. I would prefer FOTA (type *#0000# at the stand-by screen, go to Options -> Check for updates, and proceed to download and install when prompted)

Well for not being very sure, that sequence worked perfectly. Both my phone and my sim contacts were selected, so I unmarked the sim contacts and we shall see now how it goes!
Is updating software all that important? It seems to me that it is just an invitation for a new and different problem.

Glad that the sequence worked. Updating the software is important because it generally improves performance. I'm not denying the fact that there could be new bugs. But for me, the latest has been better. It's upto you to decide.
Good luck

ok, now when people call, I see who they are, but I am still only seeing the phone number when they send a text message.
If I do the master reset, will I lose things like saved text messages or my contact list? My contact list is empty on my sim card, how do I copy the phone contact list onto my sim card?
13-Jan-2010 11:13 AM
If you do a RESET, you will lose your data. But, if you RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS (ie., *#7870# ), you will NOT lose data. You can always back up the contents of the phone memory (Contacts, Texts, Bookmarks, Notes, Calendar entries, Reminders, etc.) using the PC Suite. It's always a good idea to backup these things regularly.
Before a reset, you HAVE to backup the data. Before restoring factory settings, it is not necessary.
To copy the phone contact list, go to Contacts -> Options -> Mark All. Then, Options -> Copy -> To SIM Directory.

ok, copied my contact list to my sim card, at least 145 of them before my sim memory was full, I will try factory defaults restore now. See if that helps.
Other than my contact list, there is nothing that I need to back up or save on my phone, that PC suite is something I played with a little when I got the phone, but it was confusing and not user friendly at alI and I never bothered with it afterwards, I ended up putting music on the phone by hooking it up to my computer as using the phone as another drive.
I will restore it to factory defaults now and let you know if that fixes the problem.
