Hi,
I wonder if keeping my Nokia 5800 charger plugged into the phone for the whole night will cause any damage to the battery on the long term?
Is the charging process itself smart enogh to disconnect when the battery is full in order to prevent overcharging? I know that we get a message saying that charging is complete but does it really disconnect the charging current?
One more question please , is it true that Nokia mobile battries have some kind of memory that records how many times it has been charged? may be to mark usability or remaining battery life
Regards

Hi, there is no need to worry about charging over night, I have had many Nokia phones and always done this, and never had to replace a battery even after 2/3 years. I will occasionally let the phone fully discharge, but more out of 'old habits die hard' rather than neccessity. Also it would cause no harm or 'memory effect' if you wanted to simply 'top up' at some point during the day. I would normally give my phone a full charge whenever it falls bellow 2 bars.
Hope this puts your mind at rest.
Good Luck

Almost all phones of today use Lithium-ion cells. They need to be charged and discharged completely a couple of times in order to get the maximum performance out of them. After this initial 2-3 cycles, it's good to maintain 70-100% charge as much as possible. It does not mean that you should keep it plugged in all the time. And you can do a complete discharge and full charge every month or so in order to re-calibrate the battery. Li-ion batteries can be charged anytime...
Keeping the charger plugged in overnight will not harm the battery as there is a charging circuit in the phone that shuts off the current to the battery once it is topped up.
The memory that you are referring to is not an actual memory, but a memory effect. The gradual degradation of performance of the battery is what you call the memory effect. Batteries do wear out with time, normally a new battery would last for 2-3 years, some even more. But that depends heavily on how much you use the phone, how you maintain the battery, etc.
