Even though Nokia has released several firmware updates for the Nokia 5800 (last one just a few days ago), I'm stuck in version 21.2.025 (custom version 21.2.025.415.02).
I have tried to update it directly on the phone and also using PC Suite's Nokia Software Updater but in both cases I get a "no new version available" message.
Any help will be appreciated.

I guess I found an answer in "All about Symbian":
Why do some 5800 owners get a firmware update before others?
Even a single phone model can come in many different variants, each with its own firmware. For example if you buy a phone from a phone network operator, it may have a custom firmware version.
When a firmware update is released, it's normally released first for unbranded unlocked phones, with all the network-locked variants released after that. Some network operators may not bother to do updates for their variant, in which case anyone who's bought a phone locked to that network is stuck with old firmware even when the manufacturer has created new firmware.
So I guess my network operator is not paying any attention to these updates and I'm stuck in custom version 21.2.025.415.02 for good.

Yet, while my 5800 is no-brand, no firmware update is still available from its pre-installed v.31. Is there a reason for this?

I understand that if you have an unlocked phone you will get the update for your "variant" sooner or later, definitively sooner than the rest of us. Anyway, V31 is not an old one. It was released about three months ago. It will definitively allow you to install and enjoy Ovi Maps "for free and forever" as Nokia announced a few days ago.

I confirm Ovi Maps could be installed, and are working flawlessly.
And, since one of the most sought after features of the new v. 40 is the kinetic scrolling, since I'm mostly using Opera Mini (that has kinetic scrolling on its own) I can be happy enough with what I have.

Chan, thank you for your hint. But I admit that I like Opera Mini 5 better: it has the same very well conceived UI, and at the same time it is lighter (without any apparent sacrifice to browsing features).

Chan, are you referring to Opera Mini 4 or 5? After trying both (and Opera Mobile) I feel that Mini 4 and 5 are very different the one from the other; and that Mini 5 seems to resemble more Opera Mobile 10 than its predecessor. I didn't do any deep comparison, but I wonder if you are thinking to the latest beta of Mini.

Back to the original post (updating nokia 5800 firmware) I've found a blog describing a detailed procedure to update the phone "product code" (whatever that is). I understood that once you change the product code you are able to get firmware updates from Nokia. The blog is written in spanish. You will find it at http://www.usonokia.com/blog/2009/12/actualizacion
I would like to hear from if anyone that changed its phone product code and side effects this might have.

Here is another blog describing exactly the same procedure, this time in English.

In regards to the Product Code question. The only side affect would be that it would void your warranty. Also that is not a procedure that can be discussed in the forum.
In regards to Opera Mini 5 vs Opera Mobile 10. I have used both on my phone and would have to say that I think Mini is a better option. Some users (including myself) have gotten "Out of Memory" warning while using Mobile 10, even after I changed the memory allocation. Yes Mobile has a slightly better keyboard and there are more configuration option, but the browsing experience is not much different with Mini than it is with Mobile. I prefer Mini 5 since I do not have to worry about running out of memory while browsing.

Warranty is something I don't want to loose. Actually it is the reason I bought the phone from my carrier. Unfortunately, it seems that I bought a phone and a straitjacket too.
Thanks for your answers and sorry for bringing the product code update subject to the forum. I had no idea this would be a sensitive issue.

My phone product code is 0559408. It has 30.0.011.C02.01 (language set 23) installed. I checked Nokia website and it says I can update to 40.0.005. But both NSU and FOTA tell me there is no update. Any idea? Appreciate.
