AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

ALL my problems began on wed, the 6710 arrived, put in my sim card all was well, then it goes down hill all the way down

into a deep ditch then into lots of poo.

After several hours of use, say 3 the zoom bar was making it zoom in and out on webpages and nokia maps, no option to turn off the zoom bar so i ring up my service provider and tell them they tell me to take it to the 3 shop and show them the fault ok no problem...

I get into the shop and show them the fault...

Zooms in and out.

Now it's triggering the centre button for the menu too, so now it selects things you don't even select, how nice.

30 minutes later I have a swapped phone, while in the shop i put the sim card in and I run Nokia Maps 3.0 the screen

loads up and all of a sudden i hear a loud static type white noise coming from it next thing i know the phone switches

off, ok possibly a bad bug (no GPS reception to get a lock it just got confused), wifi everything else looked ok.

still, best run the GPS app to find your location, again it crashes it restarts on it's own.

Anyway I used the other features seemed ok no crashing so i left the shop,  I get back home 20 minute drive, I open up the GPS locator app again, surprise surprise it crashes yet again :smileyindifferent:

So I tried it once more, what else i have i got to lose, next thing i know the PHONE REPEATEDLY started switching itself off and then on, i would see the nokia logo intro screen start up, then it would die and turn off, I sat and watched it switch itself on and off like this for about 2 minutes ok let's pull the battery out and wait a few minutes I put the battery back in and went to switch it on.

???? switch on.... pressing the power button, not switching on, this has died, completely and utterly died (yes phone charger is plugged in battery half power before it died)

ok fine... I head back to the nokia store.

Look see, this is even worse it's now dead, ok...

THIRD phone taken out of yet a new box (i'm on my THIRD 6710 in only 48 hours) PLEASE let this work, ok zoom bar works, gps works, no crashes ok good fine THANK YOU!!!!

oh um, hmmm I run nokia Maps i try to get it to navigate, oh Nokia has a lifetime licence or 2 years at least for the nokia 6710, but mine is telling me i have to pay for a perscription um ok what?....

fast forward 3 hours of talking to Nokia, my service provider, tech support, you name it,  i spoke to them, EVENTUALLYafter no less than 4 phone calls to the nokia centre first time they put me on hold, second time they said they would call me back (still waiting for that phone call) I tried once again but i got no answer..

Finally a 4th (nice woman) i explained the problem and explained that this is the 3rd phone, but all the licences have already expired this is not what i bought...  ok to try and help I recalled some info which i read months ago about nokia taking sim info and matching it against the IMEI

after 1 1/2 hours on the phone she tells me i'm in 'luck' she then had to track down someone with level 3 nokia privlidge or something like that as she did not have the clearence to do this job, so 30 minutes later she tracks down someone in the know and in clearance to do this 5 minute job...

Finally after 2 hours I managed to supply her with enough info to pass on to change my licence info to match the 3rd phone...

Yay :smileyindifferent:

3 phones, $20+ of calls

3 hours of talking

No licence

over 4 hours of "resetting, trying. deleting, installing"

Vast amounts of time and effort wasted trying to get the 6710 Navigator working.

Something which should have taken only an hour turned into an absolute nightmare.

So if the first 2 were faulty, this would indicate that ON AVERAGE only 1 in every 3

nokia 6710's actually WORK, and there's no evidence to suggest that even this 3rd

one will be working in 6 months time either due to the zoom bar's really bad design

or design flaw.

So is it a nice phone?.... yes it's feature rich and very powerful providing it works.

1/10 for build quality, stay away from it, I now have to live with it and hope nothing goes wrong.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

Oh and to top it off...

the store in which i bought it said as i was leaving, if it goes bad again we wont swap it instead you have to use the warrenty and send it to nokia

um I don't think so, if this dies again within the 14 days i'm on day 5 now, if this dies again before the 14 days i will demand my money back is that not only fair? if they can't give me a working product out of the box then why should i have to use the warrenty to get it fixed?....

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

My experience is EXACTLY the same. When I first got the phone, I noticed the zoom-in and out problem.. then the random reboot or shut-down problem.. and eventually a dead phone (keeps rebooting) - all this from within 3 weeks.

Took it to Nokia Service center, they claimed they replaced one component, a cable (i assume this is the cable connecting the slider to the motherboard) and also flashed the firmware.

after 3 days, the phone died again... ( even though the zoom-in and out problem was resolved) due to rebooting issues.. so the phone went back to the service center.... TWO AND A HALF weeks later... the phone was finally repaired again, and this time they said they replaced the WHOLE motherboard, and the screen (since the screen somehow had smudges after the first repair)...

Took it back and was using - and it's been about ONE AND A HALF weeks and the usual "reboot" problems or the zooming problem is no longer there.... HOWEVER, now the loudspeaker's volume is way too soft - making it un-usable under most circumstances. You really need a quiet room to use the damn thing...

Now that I see that the issue is not unique to me, I would really advice people to stay away from this model.

A VERY DIS-SATISFIED CUSTOMER - I am about to throw the phone away and never buy another nokia product again.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

um yes now you point it out i tested the 'loud' speaker and it's about 1/10th as loud as my old N95...

Jeez, this phone is a mess not to mention GPS freezing when sat loss occurs.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I was just thinking, if it is a cable that comes lose which connects the slider bar and that's the root issue because it's poorly connected to begin with....How many people when calibrating the compass (like i did to begin with) would overly shake the phone, up down, around, side back to front.... each time it's not going to help a poorly connected cable..

I guess the answer to stop this slider/scroll bar  issue is a simple one, don't shake it, don't move it, just leave it on the table at home :smileyhappy:) :smileyvery-happy: :smileyvery-happy: :smileyvery-happy: :smileyhappy:

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I have one problem so far with the Nokia 6710: the loudspeaker is much too soft. prety much unusable. I have teken it back to the shop (Optus) 3 times within the first week. every time they took a new handset out of the box and everytime the loudspeker is not loud enough. I have asked them to give me a different model but they refuse. at the moment they have sent the third fawlty 6710 hendset to repeairs and I am back using my old Nokia 6110 which is 2 years old and still working fine.

Dose anybody have a Nokia 6710 with a workable loudspeaker? I'd really like to know.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

Guys..iam sharing the same bad experience with this mobile.First time I took this mobile to nokia care in Kuwait city & they claimed its a SW issue & you have to wait for the new update. But after reading the comments about it in web/forums in web I realized that this is a hardware problem. So I went again to nokia care & insisted to check it by a technician ..4 days later & they SMS me to take the mobile.Surprised!!.The swapped the headset with a new one.Checked it & figured out that all the problems (hanging, freezing, zooming in/out,crashing..Etc) has been resolved till this moment.Ii guessed that this mobile got a manufacturer defects & I was right! This mobile often comes with a faulty board & that's why most users complained about it.Its a quality issue ..& nokia is aware about this problem but didn't confess about it as quantity over quality raises this matter.Anyways I recommend everyone who got the same problems to bring it to nearest nokia care & ask for inspection with a specialist ..Good luck!

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I also have a very quiet loudspeaker. Inaudible, aamof.

I also have an issue with the GPS voice thru bluetooth - it goes from inaudible to distorted.

And sometimes the phone responds very slowly.

Although it has good features, I'm thinking it should be avoided.

for Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I opted for the 6710 for the improved functions, faster processor etc.  The phone does have plenty of capacity however like many have been inferring on the web, it also comes with some quality issues.

People I call on the phone inform me that it is a tinny sounding call and that there is also a hum.  The hum I know is there as it was in my ear after about 5 minutes.  I updated all firmware but with no change.  I took the phone back within 4 days.

Thankfully 5 weeks later (the resellers timeline to replace the phone), another 6710 clean out of the box.  Tried it in the shop for 3 minutes or so, no problems.  Took it home, started setting it up, got a phone call.

5 minutes later, white noise!!!

Question:  Is this a fault known widely by Nokia?

Question:  Is there an option to change models based on repeditive faults like this?  Surely all these returned phones is not economical.

Re: for Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I am about to get my 3rd Nokia 6710 - tomorrow.

I have had an issue where it wouldnt turn on after it was powered off on the first phone.

The second phone randomly turns itself off, when either a) in a call, b) updating contacts or c) using map tools.

In 8 weeks, the 3rd handset..... and I havent even got to maps to have the zoom issue, or the loudspeaker issue - maybe that is the issue I can look forward to on my 3rd handset.

Very disappointing, but have found Nokia Care Centre staff very friendly and helpful - even if they deny any 'known' issues on the product! Maybe they need to read their own discussion boards.

Re: for Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I bought this phone just a few weeks back and now its not working. The battery was totally drained to i tried to recharge it but the phone won't charge despite charging it for over 6 hrs. All it does it vibrates for a few seconds when i push the power button on the phone and thats it, no display or welcome screen after that. What do you think could be wrong with it?

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

This phone is flaky.

Now, when you hook up with the bluetooth blueant, the blue ant acknowledges.

When people ring I cant hear them and they can't hear me.

When I ring people, same.

On the GPS, no problem.

And another thing, what is the point of this forum?

We're all in here whinging about this piuece of **bleep** and what gets done about it?

Where are the Nokia reps?

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

nokia representatives are not here dud, they are all having vacations in some Iceland driving jet ski all day long and taking hot jacuzzi all evening with hot ladies with your money. This forum is made for us who own one or more of this useless phone to keep the dream of nokia real and coming true... Aren't we connected all in the same mood with the same troubles and the same goal? So they keep on connecting people using this forum.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

This ain't right, i mean we pay a lot of money for these phones and this is what we get. I am planning to sue them if i don't get a proper device. It seems nokia doesn't give a damn about its customers, maybe a lawsuite will help them think about their customers.

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

I also bought my nokia 6710 navigator in portugal and i also got the same problems as everybody else in this discussion. why can't nokia find any fix solution to this problems like recalling all devices in this model and change it with a model in the same price and features?

Re: AVOID the Nokia 6710 Navigator.

A follow up from my Feb 10 post.  Onto my third handset and continued problems.  Phone randomly stops recognising the SIM, randomly requests the memory card be removed and then resets it's theme, is very slow to display when opening the slide, doesn't conduct email sync as programmed, randomly zooms in and out on image gallery, still has white noise, dosen't disconnect from email when specifically selected to do so and on and on and on.  There are no updates because Nokia I think have given up on the phone.  They should take it off the market.  My next stop, Office of Fair Trading in Australia.  I recommend that others who are not getting a totally new model do the same and let your official government departments investigate.
