well i dutifully upgraded to the latest firmware and while the kinetic scrolling is nice i feel there has been an attempt to emulate the iphone somewhat with the 'slider' functions for answering calls and turning off alarms?
frankly i think they are awful and fiddly there was nothing wrong with the origional touch button functions. the rest is fine nokia honestly i Heart my 5800 immensly but stop trying to ape the iphone and just do your own thing
please remove the sliders in the next update please! ![]()

I think the benefit of these slide movements is that they are unlikely to happen by accident so you do not have to unluck the phone before applying them. If you phone is on your hip and part of the screen is getting pressed on I suppose it could happen that the phone picks up automatically when it rings. With the slide movement it has to be deliberate.
Well, that's my take on it anyway ![]()

i also don't like these new slider confirmation buttons. since when was usability increased by changing a standard button to something you have to slide your finger along. nokia - please change this back or at least let us know your reasoning behind this strange design/usability decision. cheers.

To each its own, I for one like it.

It was placed due to the complaints of the phone getting answered without the user knowing when the unit is in their pocket and the pressure presses the screen. Please keep in mind that the 5800 has a resistive screen which uses pressure to register touches, unlike a capacitive screen (iphone and x6), which, while more expensive, will not react to pressure if the object pressing is not of a certain electrical property (this include organic material, hence our fingers register).

I suggest you let Nokia know your thoughts ( this is nokia users )

thanks for info. but do folk not use the screen lock button on the side? isn't that exactly what the screen lock is for?!
btw - i was appealing to the guys at nokia here 'cos I assumed that perhaps they peruse the boards for customer feedback, although I didn't seriosuly expect them to change the buttons back just 'cos I asked. ![]()
first time for me on these boards. first time nokia (and smartphone) owner too. got the 5800 a few months back. don't get me wrong - i do love my 5800, i just question some of the usability decisions they make.

actually someone sitting next to me with the same phone has suggested that the screen lock probably doesn't affect incoming calls or alarms. so, i guess it would make sense to have a 'difficult to presss by accident' button.

Right, 'they' don't want you to have to unlock the phone before answering it. Same for calendar notifications. I think the current setup works OK. I suppose if they get lots of push back they can make the interfaces selectable.

and i agree with that wholeheartedly the auto lock is useful and i find the actual physical lock switch much more useful
yes i can see how if your phone is silent and if it goes off in your pocket it could be answered by accident but i wouldnt mind the option of the two.

The swipe answers only happen when the phone is screen locked. If it is not locked, the normal press buttons happen. In the old firmware, even if the phone is screen locked, the lock is deactivated and the screen shows the buttons for answering, so thats why screen lock is useless in an "in-call" situation. Seriously you want to unlock your phone everytime you answer it? Takes too many presses for some.
