Your friend is over-reacting a bit.
Basically, some people might have to do a hard reset if they have problems after the update, but most people probably won't have problems.
I covered this in a 5800 firmware tutorial I did for AAS, I hope it's okay to link to it:
Basically:
1.If the OTA firmware update works without a hitch, you don't need to do anything
2. If there's a problem after the update, try a settings reset using the code*#7780# and then lock code (which is 12345 by default)
3. If there's still a problem, try a firmware update through the PC application (ie wipe the phone).
4. If there's STILL a problem, contact Nokia's support services (go to nokia.com/support and select your country or region)

A few bug fixes and other stuff, for example the standby light now blinks even when you don't have a message or missed call, but the blinking speeds up if there is a message or missed call.
