Hey guys,
im sorry I don't mean to rant on but I must say I've had this model for a month and its been the worst phone I've had ever. I have had a plethora of problems with it including the following :
- GPS not working, PC connectivity not working, Media player skipping through songs and not playing them, poor battery life, laggy software, firmware which freezes and displays a black screen with coloured lines ,phone not starting with memory card inserted, nokia store not working, phone calls being dropped, reception being of a poor standard... I can keep going....
I have replaced the phone twice now, I don't want to do it again. I have called support centre multiple times and to no avail. The second phone I received was working fine until I updated nokia maps to version 3.0 where the GPS wouldn't receive a signal at all and positioning was incorrect, PC connectivity refused to work under PC suite mode in the phone software and the music player not playing songs even though I can play them fine in file manager.
Im disappointed that I can't downgrade back to the old version of maps as I can not find the version for it again. I tried downloading it for the n97 and it wasn't compatible with the phone. PC Connectivity stumbles me as I just installed it last night and it was working fine, the music player baffles me to wits end.
I have asked Nokia in regards to when new firmware would be of avail and they replied : " we have no idea when it will be available, it is up to vendors for that decision ". All I want to know is how come the rest of the world can have version 30.0.11 but not Australia? I have tried using the nsu and OTA but to no avail. There is not point rreflashing in my opinion , it will be plagued with the same problems. I even asked Nokia to reflash to vanilla firmware and they were going to charge me $20 to look at it which is outrageous when I can do it for free.
All in all, I do like the phone I can see it has great potential. Practicality on the other hand needs to be thoroughly considered. Its a good PROTOTYPE not a good phone.
Is there any answers or any avenues of help I could utilise?
any help is much appreciated in advance,
my best regards,
Alex.

"worst phone ever" is a trifle melodramatic, don't you think? The two Motorola phone's I have owned were far worse!
For the sake of some balance; I, for one, have found that my 5800 has been an excellent phone - not hung once since I bought it in Feb and is acceptable fast and It has excellent reception (in an area that has a very poor signal strength). I use Nokia maps to navigate quite frequently (with GPS working faultlessly). The media player works well and has very acceptable music quality (once one has ditched the inadequate headphones!). It reliably receives my emails from both my personal accounts and my corporate MfE. All in all (IMHO) its the best "bang for buck" out there at the moment (and not many bucks at that!).
BTW I'm currently V11 and not in any desperate hurry to upgrade.

hey,
i bought the phone, had it replaced once and am contemplating having it replaced again. If i get it fixed, i dont have the access to the phone for at least a week and im getting charged for them to have a look at it even though it is clearly under warranty. In terms of stability, there are alot of aspects that need to thoroughly be considered, im running v21 on the phone, that may have some problems with itself but i have never known of a phone to crash on itself without any catalysts for the reaction. If the newest firmware was available in australia, most of the problems i think would have been solved.

hey,
hence why motorola have pretty much gone out of business.
Reception on it was working on it fine until i upgraded some software on the phone. mainly upgrading from nokia maps v2 to ovi maps v3. these functions use to work flawlessly with v2. its not the quality of the music, its the quality of the player, if it keeps skipping songs, its not acceptable. the earphones are adequate but could be improved upon with an in ear design, this would enhance the quality immensly. emailing works fine with the phone and the other corporate functions work well. I believe its the most bang for buck product right now hence why i purchased it. It may be due to the firmware the vodafone has put on there but in either case, im not impressed. if these issues were fixed, i would be able to deem it as a most suitable and acceptable phone. until then, i have to put up with it i suppose. i hope v30 comes soon though, i believe this will be the answer to my problems.

Wait a minute, who exactly is trying to charge you to have the phone looked at?
If you take it to a Nokia Care Centre it should be absolutely free to book in if the handset is indeed within warranty.
If your receipt shows the handset being less than a year old, then it has to be booked in for free up until that date, even if the handset has a cracked screen or whatever the case! (excluding perhaps IMEI stickers missing).

YEAH RIGHT!! The phone crashes often when running 3+ apps!!
Nokias Touch Screen Mobiles are the worst!

hey metalfan,
nokia support centre in parramatta told me that it would cost $20 for them to reflash to vanilla firmware instead of vodafone **bleep**. i know they should do it for free whatever the case, i dont really want to get a third handset in a space of a month, thats just ridiculous.
i overall am not particularly pleased with nokia, they have alot of explaining to do.

If your handset is in warranty, then yes a software upgrade will/should be done for free.
But they will not flash to a vanilla firmware for free. Infact, unless there is a known issue where flashing with a generic firmware fixes the problem (as opposed to Operator firmwares, vodafone etc), then usually they won't flash to generic at all, even if they charge you. So if you really want to change to generic, consider yourself lucky mate. ![]()

Well in that case, I have had a SE W810i of which used to have software problems which was badged under the Optus firmware it used to be plagued with the problems of which this phone has. On the other hand the generic vanilla coding, had no problems whatsoever. this is gnerally due to the carriers doing a botchy job when replacing the UI as well as the Splashscreens to show their carrier. In advertedly they change and modify other system files of which have adverse effects on the system.
from my interpretation this is seen to be the case again.

Yeah, spot on their mate. Carriers often cripple the software on handsets.
So if you are able to get a generic firmware on the handset, then do it.
What I'm surprised at though is the $20 fee you say they want to charge you. Out of warranty software upgrades are $49.50 I believe, so I'm not sure where $20 comes from but if you can get it for that price, go for it!

I agree with you, OP.
The phone is truly the worst phone ever designed and created and put onto market.
NOTHING about this phone is good
Apart from the awful touchscreen which picks up fingerprints, the worst thing really about this phone is the Symbian OS, which i'm suprised is in it's "5th Edition"; from the edition number you can guess how completed the Symbian OS in percentage is by using the following formula: "edition number / 100". In this case, 0.05. Symbian is so buggy and so SLOW it's unbelivable.
The people coding Symbian should just stop doing it, they're clearly getting no-where.
April the 1st would of been an ideal release date for this phone. Don't think i'm gonna buy a Nokia again if they think this product is actually worth selling in the state it's sold in.
Wish I could reclaim my £200 back.

hey guys,
im not asking for much, all im asking is this
1 is it possible to downlload and downgrade from version 3 to version 2 of nokia maps?
2. how to do so and what is the procedure?
3. when is the newest firmware coming out?
i have called the nokia care line over 5 times right now to ask a simple question, they dont answer it and tell me stupid things to try to fix it. I get nearly no reception on the fone in regards to gps and they say to take it to a support centre. its not a hardware issue, its a software issue and i am highly capable with fones myself. all i need to know is where to download it so i can fix it myself and to stop my whinging.
its a relatively simple fix and i cant believe all gps functions stopped due to a stupid upgrade of the maps software. very stupid and bizarre. anyways i just want to get this fixed soon. any help would be greatly appreciated. my best regards, alex.

you can either reinstall maps 3
i am not sure that you can downgrade to maps 2. i could not find the link tho it ispossible that there is one.
you can reinstall the firmware to get the original maps but then maps will tell you that you have to update to the latest version. so its your call. make sure you do a back up of your stuff.
