After upgrading to v40, I've compared the new homescreen to the old homescreen and to the old homescreen with v21-31, these are my findings.
- The old homescreen on v40 does not have the email notification that Nokia introduced a short while ago and which was obviously VERY well recieved globally.
- The new homescreen on v40 has kinetic scrolling contacts which is, um, cute. It has the ability to control the music player (What I found to be very buggy, crashing it by simply pressing 'forward' when it's playing a folder with 1 song).
- The new homescreen on v40 does not have calendar and tasks, probably for the space the new music player-thing takes. This was my FAVORITE thing on the homescreen and I am sure I'm not alone.
I truly hope Nokia addresses these issues by either returning the email notifications to the old homescreen or somehow allowing to see the calendar and tasks on the new homescreen. Or both.

Amen to that! Nokia released a homescreen with calendar & email info, and the public CLEARLY LOVED IT. So what do they do? Take those features out in the next firmware. The v40 firmware is pretty awesome in every other respect, I just don't understand why Nokia would force users to choose between either calendar info or email info! Maybe they just wanted consistency with the 5530 homescreen?
In any event, I hope we can eventually have both on the homescreen.

i don't know what nokia is trying to do ,but in my opinion is for the worst ,like others keep saying ,they remove featurea that everyone loves in order to introduce new experimental features that don't work or verry buggy ,and still some peaople say they are doing the best they can ... [?!?!] if this is the best they can ...

@razvan - do you even have a 5800? They did not remove the features. I just updated to v40 a while ago. You can still choose to use the old shortcut bar theme with the calendar, email and all the other stuff. They just gave the contacts bar option some more things on it.
------------------------------------
Although I would have loved for everything to be on one page, the space left after putting both contacts and shortcuts in one screen became very small. It would have probably helped if the new contacts bar was more to the size of the old one, but its quite bigger. Also, if you have both email notification, calendar and music player on screen, it wont fit anymore.

i dont know what the problem is about?
people who enjoy multimedia more than business ie having contacts, music, shortcuts can choose the new homescreen. others who enjoy business over multimedia ie having contacts or shortcuts, email, and calender can choose the previous homescreen.
nokia has considered both types of ppl and so factored that in... they would not be able to do a more of a combination because these features wont fit on the homescreen!
if you really want to customise your own HS, then these features are for the newer touch phones such as the n97 where widgets are used. nokia wont include that feature in this phone because they need to include most favourable features for the higher priced phones!

Interesting. I'm on V 40.0.005 with Product Code 0559300: Israel RED. Did you perform a hard reset after the upgrade?
Going into Menu>Settings>Personal>Homescreen> while in the Shortcuts homescreen only shows me 3 sub-menus, the 'Email notifications' is gone.

Nope. I did not do a hard reset. Although I do have to inform you, I am one lucky egg when it comes to phones, especially in the 5800. Never had a single bug.
EDIT: I did not restore my data though, since upon checking it was untouched, and also, I turned it off and on a few times to be sure that the data wont disappear.

Then perhaps this is the solution. :/
Downgrade to V 31 -> set up and enable email notifications -> upgrade to V 40.
Retarded, but I can confirm this problem, other people have the same problem as me on other forums.

Yes. That's why I think you have it and nobody else does. The hard reset after the update removed all traces of V 31.
It would be beneficial to this issue if you could backup your data and do a hard reset for the sake of science. ![]()

i also want to add the calendar to the "contact menu homescreen", which is much better (better looking and better functionality).
I don't reaaly need the email widget, because i try to connect to only WIFI so i don't want it to connect on it's own while i'm travelling..
Hope nokia will develope a new homescreen in which we can choose "emails" or "calendar".
then it would be the perfect phone...

I'm still unable to decide which screen to use. The music widget on the contacts bar is better than the music bar on the shortcuts screen, but the shortcut screen has the tasks/calendar.
I would have to agree with BullHorn7, but I since there is still some space above the music widget, the calendar should be able to take that space. Actually, if the make the email widget a bit small (about as big as the old notification bar), and just design it similar to the music bar and it just says "X new email", and the calendar/task list would be similar and just says
"5 entries, next calendar entry tom", it would fit into the place. The calendar could just expand to a more familiar view when the music player is off.
Although I hope they would still add that, my theory is that the screen is widgetized, and they still have no widgets for calendar and email designed for the xpressmusic/x-series line-up. If you notice they just input the 5530 screen onto the 5800 and the kinetic scroll. The update was pretty big (128mb according NSU), so I presume that they had a bit of a hard time doing it, as it was the second major update for the 5800. A couple of widgets shouldnt be that hard since the n-series team already did a widget happy screen on the n97mini, which had a similarly sized screen.

check out the n97 mini screen, they can do what I said!

They keep the widgetized style for the N97-ish phones and the **bleep** style for the XM phones. I guess it's a sales point of view, where they want the N97 have an advantage. That's where Apple got it right, they shove in everything they can into one phone, not break it up into many incomplete phones.
The XM series phones should have no problem with widgets just like the N97-mini you posted there. But to hell with the widgets, getting the calendar and tasks back can't be THAT hard, right?
