5800 WLAN iplayer video steaming problem goose chase

I have tried to find the answer of this problem through Orange tech support (who directed me to Nokia and the BBC) and have also tried the BBC iplayer forum and Nokia forum.

I can download iplayer programs fine on my 5800 connected to my Orange livebox via wifi but streaming them is pretty much impossible unless its not at a peak time - ie around 4pm to 11pm. And if I try to watch live TV which is a new feature on the latest version of iplayer the screen is just white although I can hear the sound.

Orange said it was not a problem with their broadband service which should be 8meg but is restricted to 2meg because of the phone line i am on.

I am wondering if its my real player settings because I can not see the picture when streaming live tv. I also read about some ISP throttling and manageing bandwidth although Orange said this was not true. I

can stream iplayer programs fine on my laptop (at a much higher bit rate than programs streamed on my 5800) which  is on the same wifi connection so maybe there is a seperate iplayer server just used for the mobile version of iplayer which can not cope or is restriced by the BBC or Orange - I dont know!

Re: 5800 WLAN iplayer video steaming problem goose chase

Not familier with the orange box, but in my case the problem was the type of encryption. I was using WPA, which on my router was using software based encryption and was slowing down the router. When I switched to WPA II, router had hardware acceleration for the encryption and streaming then ran perfectly.

I believe the other possible is to disable power saving mode in the advanced WLAN settings in the phone.

Re: 5800 WLAN iplayer video steaming problem goose chase

Thanks for the info. The Livebox I have only has WPA or WEP or WPA and WEP security options (or no security!) so I will try all 3 options if they are supported by my 5800 and see what happens.

I also changed the wigi channel number as I read somewhere that its possible for the most common number '1' to be congested. Not sure if this is the case as I changed to channel 11 and I still get the same streaming problem.

Ill also disable the power saving function in the WLAN on the phone as see what happens.
