I wonder if somebody could explain the different internet connection on the lumia 800.
I think I understand how the wi-fi works I go to the wi-fi menu turn it on then find my home network and connect very fast and easy.
The one I have the problem with is the 3G-
When I leave the house I turn off the wi-fi and the 3G as I don't want any unexpected bills from my provider, however I've noticed I still download emails.....so then I turned off the data connection and they stopped coming through but what is the data connection? what is the difference between 3G and data connection?
thanks

Data connection is a 2G connection (2nd generation) while 3G connection is, you guessed it, a third generation mobile telecommunications technology. 2G is older and encompasses slower internet, but can sometimes use less power (but may not always be the case at all). 3G is more modern and far faster than 2G internet, but may consume more power (Again, may not always be the case, as my phone uses less power on 3G than on 2G).
Thus, you will find that downloading things and web browsing is significantly faster on 3G than 2G. Other implications may arise from your particular circumstances (Particularities of your phone, connection strength etc)

Basically there are 5 different network modes the phone can work in
Wi-fi, is just connected to a local wi-fi connection
GPRS, is a 2G connection and is the slowest you can have (ofton called 2.5G)
Edge, is again 2G but better than GPRS (often called (2,75G)
3G, is a proper fast connection, it can use more power and has limited availablity depending on location.
and finally H, which means evolved HSPA is often called 4G but is more like 3.9G, it is the best possible connection that the phones currently offer and can even outperform a lot of peoples home broadband connection is even more limited than standard 3G and uses even more power this is a step towards true 4G.
Data connection just means you are connected to the internet through one of the last 4, (not wifi).
3G is one of the last 2.
If you aren't concerned about high speeds, are running low on power or are in an area with patchy 3G availablity, it is sometimes better to turn 3G off completely.

3G is a faster data connection mode. Turning off 3G does not turn off data connection completely , you still have the slower 2/2.5G data connection active.
