Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

In my case I can certainly tell you that switching on 3G sucks the life from my battery and causes the handset to warm up noticeably. This does not happen with wifi on. You might need to restart for the non-3G config to work properly. Try it out and report back...

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

Diagnostic app: As difficult it is to believe that is the cause, it is also wrong. I uninstalled it (no use for me anyway) and I can confirm that the battery life still sucks. 12 hours standby time - in flight mode or not.

I have not noticed 3G to be the reason, but I'm testing it still.

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

The battery life is now actually very good on my Lumia 800. I've only uninstall the diagnostics app (and reboot the phone).

Withthe diag app installed, my battery would run down quite fast (<12 hours ). Now I'm getting very good results. The battery lasts about 1,5 days with Wi-Fi and 3 ActiveSync mailboxes enabled.

The diagnostic app seems to be running and collecting diag-data, even when it's not visible in the taskswitcher. I believe it's made from native code so it can do a lot more than regular WP apps. Which includes depleting the battery. .

After removing the app, battery life is great.

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

[ Edited ]

i have had the update showing on Zune now for about 3 weeks, but not yet done it, as im just watching this thread to see what problems other people are having after the update.

as i've said before, my battery will last me over 2 days with normal use, although on the second day (evening time) it can run down very quick, but not always.

just seems strange how i have better battery life on my phone than most of you, considering i haven't done the update, i haven't uninstalled the diagnostics app, my 3G is on 24/7, and the phone never gets switched off...., and its used prob just as much, if not, more than some of you on here.

also, the battery life doesnt seem to be any different now with the diagnostics app, than before i had it???

when i charge it, i put it on and check on it a hour or 2 later, the most it will say on charge after fully charged i would guess to be a hour, i do not leave it on charge all night

my current battery info is

remaining battery life 54%

estimated time remaining 1 day 5 hours

time since last recharge 1 day 10 hours

(battery saver is off)

ive done about 45 mins worth of calls so far this morning, and about 7 texts

if it makes a difference or not, i got my phone mid december 2011

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

Having had the phone for only 2 days, we have had to recharge 3 times.. getting 6 hours with only 3g on. (get 14 hours on my e63 with a 3 year old battery).

Signal on my old e63 is full 5 bars, and the lumia is showing 1 or more often zero..

The battery issues I believe are to do with the 3g signal being so low.. Which has happened on previous phones, and was a firmware bug, that was misreporting the signal.

Hopefully Nokia will sort this out, before they do more damage to an once good brand!

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

It's not just the lack of battery life it's the sheer lack of reliability as to how long each charge will last under the exact same conditions!

One day I'm getting 18 hours on standby with practically no use, a few days later I'm getting 6 hours from absolutely no use and the phone simply in standby.  On the 6 hour day the reason it came to my attention was I noticed a fair bit of heat coming from my pocket, the phone was very warm to the touch, nearing what I'd class as hot and the low battery warning popped up so I shut it down. So what is the phone doing that it's generating an alarming amount of heat in standyby?

On top of that I tried to charge it that night and after 11 hours the battery icon with red bar was still on the screen and it had not taken a single bit of charge - despite being plugged into it's USB charger for 11 hours! Only after a tremendous amount of button holding, plugging in and unplugging and then finally plugging into the USB on my laptop did it charge and turn on. Thirty minutes of my life wasted!

The USB charger is not faulty it works fine if the phone is running but not if it's been run dead .. and lets face it with such hugely unpredictable battery life how are any of us to know when the phone will die?

I'm sorry Nokia but I'm about to jump ship after years of buying Nokia's (I've never owned anything but) I think having a glorified landline which needs to be plugged in all the time for me to use it has finally broken my 'rose tinted spectacles'.

Edit - I should add I have done the latest update and if anything this appears not to have fixed it but made it worse :smileysad:

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

update since my last

15:08 down to 62%

17:08 down to 29%

18:09 down to 10% (shows 12 hours left)

18:20 POWER OFF

So 6 hours from full power....

... I've noticed that when it comes back from standby mode, its showing full signal for about a fraction of a second before reverting back to 0-1 bars.

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

[ Edited ]

I've fully charged mine and it was saying 1 day 2 hours at 100% battery at 18:26

It's now 19:10 and I have used it for a couple of seconds browsing the menu nothing more and it's reading 95% with 1 day and 5 hours remaining.

WiFi is turned on

3G is off it's set to E only.

I have screen al lowest brightness and all location and other live apps turned off.

Now the day and hours bit I take that with a pinch of salt anyway it's much like the range on modern cars, it varies wildly from time to time.

But my battery has dropped from 100% to 95% in just over 40 minutes.... that's not good that's telling me I'll get 13 1/2 hours with practically no use what so ever.

So my Lumia will last 13 1/2 hours on it's current charge if I don't use it at all ... that's not a useable phone if standby only gives me 13 1/2 hours with everything bar wifi and E turned off then the second I start using it I'm looking for a power supply. That's providing whatever unseen usage that killed it in 6 hours yesteday doesn't kick in.

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

OK. I think I have to let this phone rest and start using one of my old ones.

I'll get 11-13 hours of standby time. If I use GPRS, 3G or flight mode makes practically no difference. And that's with all available updates. I have never got 24+ hours standby time like some lucky ones.

What I would like to know is should I return this phone and get a new one or would it be better to wait for a firmware update (when and if there will be one)?

I am living in a country where Lumia is not available at the moment and the warranty is not valid here + the service is not great ( I had to pay for the repair of my N8 and they could not fix it). Returning the phone is not an easy option and would be possible only when I'm in Europe next time maybe in May or June.

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

I got my lumia 800 last thursday and i've been getting 24 hours from full charge untill power off (3g on, wifi on, bt sometimes on, installing like 15 apps and playing to some games, whatsapp, 2 mail accounts, fb, twitter...). But yesterday I charged it around 8 pm and after unplugging it would only show 16 hours remaining (normally it shows 1 day and 20 hours).

So I'm guessing there is some kind of bug... btw since last night i've had it on 2g and no wifi because I had already noticed the drainage.

My new replacement has also done this, dropped from 1 day 7 hours to 16 hours after 4 charges. Fingers crossed thats as low as it goes!

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

My battery remaining time is now 11 hours with 11 hours since charge. I haven't made or received any calls but used a fair amount of data; mostly wifi but also some 3G.

So the battery life indicator looks to be calibrating itself based on historical usage patterns. I guess the longer I have it the less wild swings I will have (bit like my car mpg indicator :smileyhappy:), well I hope so anyway!

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

Mine is also completely random, battery life seems to have little correlation with useage and battery status indicator inaccurate  to the point it might as well not be there.

Re: Reponse to customers' questions about battery life

Just wanted to add to my previous posts to this thread, I have been getting constantly 2 day plus of battery life ever since  I removed the live tiles from my home screen. Just to be clear, these are the tiles like people, pictures etc. which have an animation playing on the button. I suspect its the windows OS doing some sort of heavy cpu crunching to make the live tile animation happen. That CPU crunching could be draining the battery.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Re: Response to customers' questions about battery life

Hi

Just wanted to say that since the last update I've been having loads of battery life problems as well.

I saw someone mentioned that uninstalling the Diagnostics app from the phone increased their battery life so I tried it.

And so it has. Basing it on my normal use (few texts, few calls a day, some twitter usage, some internet browsing and around 3 hours a day of MP3 playback, Hotmail account syncing email + live weather tile), the battery life has gone from around 20 hours without charge to over 45. I've not made any other changes. All I did was to uninstall the diagnostics app and restart the phone.

Probably won't solve everyone's problems but worth trying.

The downside is that you can't see what the battery use (drain) is afterwards.

Cheers
