As a workaround, you can instead synchronize with the Windows Address Book (a/k/a Outlook Express) or Outlook, which you can then configure Thunderbird to use as well. In fact, that’s probably a better solution anyway, as it centralizes your address book in a single, systemwide location.

Not to be rude or anything, but I hope this won't take till the next Thunderbird version is out and sync AGAIN will not work...
Please keep an eye on Mozilla's release cycle if you want to support sync with their software or just don't support it at all. It's annoying having to boot Windows just for sync and realizing that it's not working again... -_-
Because of Nokia/Ovi Suite's slow development process my last successful sync was months ago. I don't want to check back every day to find the 2 day loop hole when sync finally works with your suite and the latest version of Thunderbird...

Waiting for an upgrade of nokia suite that enables real sync with TB 8, I tried the solution of syncing with outlook WAB.
But I can't achieve to sync my mobile with may outlook address book through Nokia suite. On the contrary of TB, I have no error message and nokia confirms syncing has succeeded. But When I check :
- syncing works between mobile and nokia suite
- syncing doesn't work between outlook and nokia suite : some contacts are on my mobile but not on outlook and some contacts remain on my outlook and don't appear on nokia suite.
Thus, there is no syncing betwwen outlook and my mobile.

Days pass, functionality is unavailable and no update seems to be coming up. I think that Nokia could just post a patch somewhere that changes the version compatibility range.
Very frustrating!

Hmmm,
Thunderbird sync of adressbooks is actually not supported from any other phone makers what I know.
Is there any other phone brands that support sync of Thunderbird adressbooks?
Well I have used Thunderbird during a lot of years on some computers and Nokia has been the only only one with support.
I think there is time to understand that Thunderbird is only good as an email client for example IMAP accounts and of course exchange accounts.
You people should really take a look at Microsoft Office 365 (USD 6 per month) http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/office365/online-so
if you syncing several computers and phones and don´t want problems with contacts, calender and perhaps even todo and notes.
Thunderbird is a mess when transfering accounts from a computer to another computer if not Imap and messages saved on server...l but I still like Thunderbird as an email client on computers for exchange accounts that is in-the air with backup by exchange.
I dont expect Nokia to continue supporting Thunerbird in the future as no one else does it....Not even Funambol does it..
Another thing, during the last few years there seem to be rather small development to get the Thunderbirds calender, notes to be a real choice...I think for example Zimbra (www.zimbra.com) is far better than thunderbird as a desktop email client and a half of dozen more...well just some thoughts from me.
I just think Thunderbird during the years always ends up messy and it is still half baked and will never mature...
PS1 When updating Thunderbird you should get a message if it is compatible so why update Thunderbird if Nokia hasn´t updated? DS
PS2 In Q1-2012 all Synbian will have Microsoft Mobile office for free, and that is among the best news for Symbian users in a long time DS

@ztuka It does not matter if any other company/manufacturer supports it or not. Fact is: Nokia claimed it to be working and has it as an integrated feature in Nokia Suite. If it's not working and they're not eager testing up front, they should exclude it and safe us all the pain... On top, there is no "message" saying "oh, this will not work with the strange nokia sync thingie, if you update thunderbird now" while updating. There's also NO information on the Nokia side WHICH version of Thunderbird is supported and which not. So much concerning "mature" software and so on... Updating Thunderbird is a WISE solution no matter what you think, as it speeds up the software, fixes security issues, etc. Very sad to see that proprietary software users, like you seem not to be concerned about that anymore. Now, concerning ANY of the proprietary systems and clients you suggested (and half of them WILL cost money, which I DON'T WANT to spend on this): As mentioned, not all Nokia users are Windows users (me, for example) and like an OPEN system that they can configure themselves. Thunderbird is amongst the only software able to cross the gap between the OS's and that's why I want to use it. So don't try to sell your corporate nonsense to me. I don't want to use Microsofts wacky software because Nokia is in bed with them and BY GOD I will not pay for their online-variant either! I just want to have my phone synced and I want Nokia to do their job. Nothing more, nothing less.
P.S.: Thunderbird 9.01 is out now, but I bet Nokia will support Thunderbird 8 with Nokia Suite somewhere NEXT YEAR.

**bleep**. I just made sure that I have latest versions of my software, because sync didn't work. Now I am reading here that it never worked at all? I can't believe it.
make it work for Thinderbird version 9. or remove it from your pc suite. hope Nokia chooses the first option.
regards, kwe.

right now, I hope they make a choice at all. They seem to be stuck on hacking that stuff apart...

Any news on that annoying topic?
Unfortunately in the meantime I also upgraded to TB9.
Any suggestions for a solution?
Please no stupid workarounds with additional programs.
What about going back to TB7?
Has anybody tried that and can describe a procedure so that "nothing" will be lost? What new problems will pop up?
Developers at Nokia, please make a statement or do you want me to switch to an iPhone?

I have an imap account and have reverted back to TB7. So I was in no risk of loosing e-mails.
No data loss on my side. The only problem (not too difficult to solve) was to find the correct version of the add-ons that had been updated for TB9 in the meantime, such as Lightning.
Nokia people please ring a bell!!
