Connecting PC to internet using phone on Windows 7 x64?

[ Edited ]
Hi all,
I have Nokia Pc Suite 7.1 installed on my Windows 7 x64 SP1. I'd like to connect my notebook to the internet using my phone with one-touch access application available in Pc Suite over usb or bluetooth. My phone (E55) also offers Npcia (Nokia Pc Internet Access) for the same purpose.

My question is: Are they both supported on Windows 7? Pc Suite runs on 7 but i'm not sure about One-touch access or Npcia? I read some comments mentioning difficulties / problems connecting their phones on Windows 7.

Is there anybody succesfully using their phone as 3g modem on Windows 7? (using npcia or pc suite)

Any comments greatly appreciated for Windows 7 availability / support.

Thanks a lot!

Re: Connecting PC to internet using phone on Windows 7 x64?

I can connect to the internet using my n8 cabled to laptop but it can take several tries before I am online.

But I get thrown off the internet after a while, which is annoying.

Re: Connecting PC to internet using phone on Windows 7 x64?

Hi hautho,
Do you use Windows 7? Can connection be established on 7? I read Xp and Vista is supported for Npcia or One-touch Access application whereas Nokia Pc Suite is supported on 7 though npcia and one-touch access are parts of the whole Pc Suite package.

That's a big paradox that must be clarified.

I greatly appreciate the feedback of the people who are connecting their phones to the internet using Pc Suite under Windows 7 and under Windows 7 x64.

Re: Connecting PC to internet using phone on Windows 7 x64?

On the Win 7 64 bit machine I use I have never got it to work with an N8 phone as a modem, using both bluetooth and USB, although I have not tried very hard as the PC is on a network anyway with internet. The machine will interrogate the modem fine but just will not connect to the internet either through Nokia Suite or PC Suite, or a created dial up connection coming up with the modem in use error. I suspect that there are driver issues.

It all works fine on an Win XP machine though with no problems whatsoever.

Which leads to a solution in that it also works fine for me with Win XP as the Guest OS in a virtual machine on the Win 7 64 bit PC. Note though that I use VMWare Player not Windows Virtual PC and I have not tried it in WVPC. VMWare offers better support for ports (for example it supports LPT whereas WVPC does not) and it starts much faster and smoothly so is not as inconvenient to use.

Re: Connecting PC to internet using phone on Windows 7 x64?

So one of the most important feature (using phone as 3g modem) of Pc Suite makes our phone useless on Win7 due to poor software / driver design? Almost all of brand-new notebooks and PCs comes with 7 x64!

It's not acceptable!

Thanks Nokia for disallowing many Windows 7 (most popular OS nowadays) users to use such handy feature!

Personally, I would not launch into a rant against Nokia about this as you have now done unless you have some evidence that it is actually their fault.

I have only seen this problem with recent Nokia phones reported by just a couple of people and I have seen no evidence that it is strictly Nokia's fault - it may be so or it may not be. It does not seem to be widespread.

If you do a Google search for "Error 633 Modem in use" you will see that the problem is encountered, seemingly randomly, by some users with a wide variety if devices not just phones as modems but other modems as well and all from a wide variety of manufacturers, not just Nokia.

If you read through the thousands of Google links on the error 633 problem you will also see that there seems to be no well defined solution to it - seems to be encountered by small proportion of users of a device but not all so it would seem that there are usually local machine issues involved.

In the end, as I set out, if it is important to you that you have the modem working I have found that for me with an N8 (Anna) it all works fine with Win XP installed in a virtual machine on the Win 7 64 PC.
