New RSS Feature

[ Edited ]
Hi Everyone!

We have had a recent upgrade here at Nokia Support Discussions, it has added one nice feature to the boards here. We are now able to offer RSS feeds for the Discussion Boards.

You are able to subscribe to RSS feeds in two different ways, you can subscribe to a thread as a feed or you can subscribe to a whole board as a feed.

To subscribe to a board you need to first view the board itself. For example, I wanted a feed from the Smartphones board. To do this I clicked on the Smartphones link, once open I click on Options (this can be found on the bar at the top of the board itself). Here the option to subscribe to board's RSS feed can be found. If you click on this item you will be presented with the RSS feed itself, if you have an RSS reader installed you will get the threads presented to you in a readable format. However, if (like me) you dont have one installed you will see the thread presented to your through your browser (not pretty).

Go ahead and take a look if you like, the feed for the smartphones board is http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/rss/board?board.id=smartphones. If you dont have an RSS reader installed you will see a mess.

Some RSS readers need you to copy and paste the address of the feed into the RSS reader. The address is in the address bar - they all follow a similar format so the feed for the PC Suite board is http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/rss/board?board.id=pcsuite.

If you would like some more information on what RSS is, you can take a look at Wikipedia's entry for RSS here: RSS (file format).

To read RSS feeds, you need to use an RSS reader or Aggregator. These are applications that presnent the channels to you in a readable format. There are a lot of different types of RSS readers out there, some Linux machines will have them already installed as will some Apple computers. As well as this there are also some online RSS readers, a quick search with a search engine of your choice should show you what is on offer.

Cheers

Re: New RSS Feature

great idea. I've added a thread to 'my yahoo!' but although the thread is listed in my feeds, i have no subject header stating the source of the feed?

Hi Rich!

I checked this on My Yahoo and on the Google Reader, both of these list the name of the board as the source, like Phones, Smartphones etc but none of them say Nokia UK Discussions. I guess this is because you cant subscribe to the board as a whole, but I will pass this on.

Re: New RSS Feature

The 'blue bar' location of the links is a bit misleading since the redesign. The green 'Options' link is right next to the big "Reply" button at the head of each post, just below the breadcrumb trail that shows you which page you're on.

Feeds available for any keyword

You can also create a personal feed on any keyword. This feature has been available for a while but we haven't really advertised it.

For example, if you want to follow all new posts that mention the N82 firmware, just do this:

1) type n82 firmware into the Search Discussions box
2) click "Search Options" and choose "Subscribe to this search's RSS feed"
3) copy the url of the feed page into your favorite RSS reader

Personally I mainly use igoogle to collect and display my RSS feeds, it's simple enough. www.pageflakes.com is also quite easy to use.

Re: Feeds available for any keyword

Small step for Nokia.com but a big one for Discussions - we've just started to display RSS feeds from these boards across the site.

See an example at
www.europe.nokia.com/n82/support

with a basic feed for all posts mentioning "N82". We hope this helps more Nokia device owners find our community.

Re: New RSS Feature

Hi,

Are the feeds limited to the first 20 entries? I have tried a number of news readers and the maximum number of messages per topic that they display for the Nokia discussion boards is 20. I have no problem showing many more messages with other feeds..my only problem is this board.

Thanks

What is the difference between google's normal reader and igoogle that you mention? I have been using google as i have yet to find a way that will allow me to read rss feeds from within the safari reader on the n95 online in a full webpage when i am on my laptop. Google allows me to read it on the phone or on the web and synchronises between the two without me having to do anything manually.

Re: Feeds available for any keyword

and am i correct that you have to subscribe to each forum by individual rss and that there isnt just one rss feed to cover the whole forum?

Yes, I think 20 is the maximum for a single board (like Nseries). But you can get 25 latest posts at pageflakes.com for any search keywords from these boards. That's the maximum that pageflakes allows - igoogle only shows the nine latest.

With igoogle I mean the personalized google mainpage - also available via www.igoogle.com.

There's also the Google Reader at http://www.google.com/reader. I haven't used it that much but it looks like it shows a lot more than just 20. But then again the xml-file for any of the boards only lists the 20 latest - maybe somebody who knows more about RSS feeds can help out here?

And you're right, there's no master feed for the whole community. Feeds can be based on board, topic or any keyword.

Re: New RSS Feature

Thanks, lifebloger!

It's now also possible to get a master feed for the whole community - go to the main page and make an empty search, and then pick up the feed from Search Options.

And with Advanced Search, you can limit the feed to all new topics by exluding "re:", or limit the feed to only show new threads that have an Accepted Solution in them.

Or you can search for new topics that don't have any replies: make an empty advanced search without "re:", just search from the Subject, and tick "Show only topics with no replies".
