Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

Hi

I decided to give the Music store (Germany) a spin and downloaded one track for €1.

So far so good.

After flashing my phone with the latest software, the playback license is gone.

If I try to play the file, I get this message:

"Unable to play. License invalid. Get license over the air?"

Then I get to log in to Nokia Music Store, and am invited to pay €1 again to play the same file I just bought on the same phone.

Answers? Similar experiences?

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

Only the N-series PC suite can back up licence keys but they don't make people clearly aware of that.

Not sure about the German music store but the UK store allows you to download your purchases again for free.

You can either re-download them to the phone or on a PC then transfer them to the phone.

Whilst signed into the store select "my account" then "purchased music" to be able to re-download your tracks.

If you have trouble with it on the phone use a PC to download them and follow the instructions on the site to transfer your tracks.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

the help file says (paraphrased)

"just download it again from the music store by going through "My Account" and "My Downloads" "

So now I have *two copies* of the same unplayable file.

Now when I press play on either file in media player, I can request a license, which churns away for a few minutes and...."Unable to acquire license" is shown.

Can you imagine this with Apple/iTunes/iPod?

Can you imagine updating your iPod Firmware then having to download *everything* you ever bought from the *iTunes store* (step 1) and then download the licenses i_n_d_i_v_i_d_u_a_l_l_y (step 2)?

Thank goodness I only decided to test this out with one track.

I had no problems with the UK store on a PC but I download and played the tracks on the PC before transferring them to the phone. The PC obtained the licences and transferred it with the files using WMP11.

I had an issue with the store on the phone where it wouldn't even download the tracks.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

That is the way around this problem - download them to the PC, which will pull the licence with the download because it is not already on the PC. Then sync the phone with WMP and the licence should be restored to the phone.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

OK. Now the world/Nokia thinks I'm a *dolphin*
and will *jump through hoops*.

What I've tried -

1) click on file in phone and re-acquire the license (doesn't work - requests new payment)

2) Followed the Nokia help file suggestion and download the file again (doesn't work- same as 1)

3) Sync'd using Windows Media P(l)ayer. (New download and sync) Doesn't work - still wants payment and it crashed explorer.exe twice... (done on a different PC to the one listed below)

What I won't try :

--install a different version of PC suite than standard.

--Why? Music store isn't just N series! One size should fit all and this is supposed to be a MOBILE EXPERIENCE - I could just use iTunes and doubletwist)

What I want:

-I buy music
-I upgrade the firmware
-I play the music I already bought,

then either:

-- the licenses aren't scrubbed by a firmware upgrade (why should they be -it's still the same phone!?)

Or

-- Music Player offers to "refresh" the licenses, downloads the license for the current track, and silently does all other tracks in the background whilst I'm listening to that track (with a small prompt ín case I want to decline due to data transfer costs)

What finally worked :

- I have a copy on a different, totally separate PC, which I synced back to the phone, leaving me with four copies on the phone, three which play and one which doesn't (presumably the original copy...)

What this says to me:

--> People without PCs with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Media Player to sync their music to, shouldn't use Nokia Music Store.

--> This is a Microsoft Music Store.

--> I should stick to iTunes and DoubleTwist or ripping CDs.

What I will do:

Ignore Nokiasoft/MicroNokia Music Store.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

The updating process usually wipes the phone memory, where licences are stored - which is why they are lost.

It is like reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows, which is why a proper backup is always advisable first.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

I had the same issue after upgrading my N95-1 from 20.0.015 to 30.0.015. I could not add new songs downloaded freshly from the Nokia Music store, either I could play old songs with DRM.

The remedy was to format the (removable) 2 GB memory card under the new firmware 30.0.015 and then reloading my music library using Nokia Music Player (from Nokia Beta Labs - very close to the production level since July 2008). There is no need to replace songs one by one but all of them needs to be reloaded from PC to the device. If you do not have a PC and/or Windows Media Player 11, you are out of luck.

I reckon that the problem is not actually related to the Content Copy version but rather to the fact that in my phone the 2GB Flash disk is removable. Of course, the mighty Microsoft has thought about the horrific possibility that I can actually pop out the memory card and put it on my friend’s phone. What a loss of business and lack of moral!

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

Hi, I have an 8gb card on my 5310 and couldn't play any DRM'd music after I upgraded the firmware to V 09.42 from 8.32. Neither could I transfer and music to the phone, as the music store software complained that the 5310 was not the registered device, it displayed a licence error message and then suggested buying the music. When I attempted to play DRM music on the phone it put out a message saying receiving access key but the music still failed to play. I then found this thread and reformatted the card as suggested and this worked. I did take a backup and restore before/after the firmware upgrade but this didn't prevent this issue.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

I had this problem.  I had already backed up my device before I did the firmware upgrade.

I then reformatted the hard drive and restored the factory settings.

I then restored my backup.

That has fixed my problem.

To restore facoty settings type *#7780#.
Then enter the code 12345.

Anything I write on this forum are my own opinions and does not necessarily represent the views of Nokia.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

I am doing firmware updates regurarly. I do not want to format my flash disk every time and go through the hassle of uploading all the songs again. Now, even when I have a DRM'ed song, purchased from Nokia Music Store or where else, I burn a CD out of it with Nokia Music Player. Then I put back the CD and let the Nokia Music Player rip it to me as non-DRM'ed MP3. And that's it. No problems with DRM anymore. Down with the DRM!:smileytongue:

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

I have never use Music store before. I registered to the site with my E71 (hey, how many logins use need in the nokia mobile world, Ovi, music store, discussions, Nokia Forum - all require separate account!).

It was not too great experience. The first song that I tried, this week's free song, did not start loading, but ended in error claiming the memory card (where I haven't had any troubles ever). Second try told that I have already purchased the song, and I needed to surf along  the site to locate and download it.

Now I am stuck with error saying that license is invalid, and trying to get it  over the air does not work. It also ends in an error, saying unable to get the license. Is there any other way than formatting the 8G card, full of my movies and music, and files, which I would not like to copy back and forth...? And yes, I  have updated the phone firmware just recently.

You really need to an engineer to use the phone, and  these "services".

Second thing I do not understand is that I can use music store over the web, using my phone, but the same is not possible with PC, but I should install one more piece of additional software.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

Seems like there is some progress. Now the over the air license check gives me a web page to login with my account; however after a successfull loginit claims I have no rights for the song, and I could buy it again...

Even if I do so, I get an error, unable to acquire license....

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

I have the same problem with licenses and cannot seem to find a way to get it resolved. It would be nice if someone from Nokia would step in and say what the problem is etc.

Will try and read through whatever people have done and see if I can figure it out. This is not an area that I am familiar and to be honest would expect Nokia to resolve the issue. It may be that

they need to be persuaded that they cannot sell products that do not work and ignore their responsibility.

Have any of you tried to find out how to contact OVI Music ? I would not mind if I could send and wait for an email etc. Its like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Re: Music store licenses - killed by firmware upgrade?

Hi,

you could try the following, but be careful not to loose any data.

To me it looked like formatting the memory card in Nokia phone resolved the issue. Of course you loose ALL data in the card, so try it with preferably a spare memory card, or backup your existing card, format it, and give a try before restoring.

If it works restore the backup, but don't overwrite the new files/folders. I have no info, which ones are meaningful, and it might be that some default settings are set back to default values. It would be nice to get info from Nokia which files/folders contain the correct data...
