After the Anna update, the music player no longer lists compilation albums as a single albums, but separates them into individual artist/album combinations.
This means that compilations, mix-CDs etc. are effectively not listenable any more.

Refreshing the library doesn't change anything. I also deleted the albums on the device and re-transferred them.
It really appears that this is intended behavior!

I had 5 GB of Albums. After update the songs were listed individualy under artist. rather than album. I deleted the 5 GB on the phone, used windows 7 file exploer to change the artist to album name and reloaded them - all works well now - better than before! Its a bug and until they fix it you will have to do a work around as I did.

Of course there are workarounds.
It appears that the problem is actually caused by the new player being more correct in its interpretation of the tags, i.e. that different artists are no longer grouped together into an album just because of a shared album name. Before the update, this is what happened, and could lead to problems when you had two identically named albums in your library on the phone - they would be shown as one.
Now these conflicts, which I think were very rare in practice (I never once encountered the problems with hundreds of albums passing through my N8), are solved. Different artists are only grouped under a single album if there is a common "album artist" tag. With very correct tagging, for compilations this should be set to "various artists" or some such, while for mix-CDs this is where the name of the DJ who created the mix goes. Unfortunately, almost nobody out there tags their albums that way (including me), so tagging problems with existing tags occur constantly now.
Nokia have thus, by implementing a more correct solution, solved a highly infrequent problem, but created big problems in everyday use of real-world data.
The choices appear to be to either implement a way of tagging that three previous music player phones, two MP3 player and several music player applications on my computers did not demand, or to say goodbye to my N8 as a music player.
I'm still debating.

G8ZoST: Thanks for the clue
I just tested a variety of ID3 tags and the magic tag is: performer (album artist tag not working.)
Performer tag in conjunction with album tag, group songs in the correct album.
Example:
1. song
album: The Crow
artist: The Cure
title: Burn
permormer: Various Artists
2. song
album: The Crow
artist: For Love Not Lisa
title: Slip Slide Melting
performer: Various Artists

I'm experiencing the same problem. Since I upgraded to symbian anna, my compilations appear as separate albums in every song. very frustrating!!!
My phone is a Nokia C7-00
I was looking at the post, but couldn't figure out how to tag the songs as you said.
I keep my music in the memory card but I didn't import it through Ovi. Just copied id from windows explorer and inserted it to the phone (been doing like that for years and no problems until symbian anna).
There is no field "album artist" or "performer" when you check the properties of every song in windows explorer.
How should I do it?
thanks
