Text Issues after Anna Update, N8

So after updating to Anna, friends that don't have smartphones can't read my text messages. When they try and open the message, they either get nothing or weird characters. Anyone run into something like this?
FYI, I am using ATT.

Does it help if in Messaging > Options > Settings > Text message > Character encoding - you choose "Reduced support"?

If I've helped in any way, a click upon the white star at bottom right of screen would always be appreciated.
