I have an E72, which is my first smart phone. I have successfully used Nokia Messaging to set up two email accounts that push email to the E72. However I am very confused about what is actually happening.
I want all email to be sent to my phone, but not to be deleted from the mail server, so when I switch my computer on I get them again. Most of the time this happens, but on numerous occasions emails I have received then deleted from my phone never appear on my computer.
I want emails to on my phone to stay there until I delete them, which is normally as soon as I have read them. However, on two occasions I have been looking at the inbox on my phone when it contains several messages, and the messages have just disappeared before my eyes. I have no idea why.
Finally, I cannot find any documentation on the email configuration options on the phone itself. I have set up the servers through the Nokia Messaging web site and that works fine - but I don't now know which configuration options on the phone are relevant and which not. For example, though experimentation I have established that "Synchronise new updates" must be switched on - but I have no idea what it means. I'm guessing that all the timed synch options are not relevant when email pushing is used - but again have no idea. Where can I find this information.
Thanks for any advice you can provide.

First of all, the option "synchronize new updates" is the "push" option. You may still want to set-up some schedule, so that the "push" is only active at certain times.
Regarding your main question. Nokia Messaging normally uses IMAP, which means that on the phone you see the e-mails that are on your mail account, and if you delete some they will also be deleted from the server at the next synchronization.
Apparently what you want is POP, not IMAP, so you may need to check your settings (most people are actually happy that IMAP exists ![]()
Also, the e-mails you see on your phone are actually those that are within a certain "time window", i.e. e-mails from, say, 2 weeks ago or older, will disappear from your phone (but not from the server, your phone is just displaying contents of your mail server).
Hope this clarifies your questions a bit..
BTW, regarding the different settings and options, I would suggest you read the phone manual and/or use the help built-in the phone. It's actually good material..

Thank you for your reply.

Thanks for clearing that up. So the scheduler and push functions work together, that makes sense. I was thinking it was either a scheduled poll of the server OR push, but that does not seem to be the case.

I have the server type set to POP3 both on my phone, and on the email.nokia.com web site, so I don't think that can be it.
> the e-mails you see on your phone are actually those that are within a certain "time window",
I saw that setting, and the time window is still set to the default of 2 weeks. I haven't had the phone that long so I don't think that can be the issue either. I generally don't leave emails on the phone, so I can keep the master copy on my PC, so it is unlikely an email would be there for 2 weeks in any case.
> I would suggest you read the phone manual
Went there first ;o) I can't see that this is explained in the manual though. The Nokia messaging service only gets a glancing mention.
> and/or use the help built-in the phone
Went there second, but again no mention of the synchronisation settings. Maybe I just have not learned to navigate the on-phone help properly yet.
Once again, thanks for your reply.
Regards.

So from observation, I think this is what is happening...
When I receive an email on my phone the email is also left on the server, so when I connect my PC I am able to receive the same email on my PC. However, receiving email on my PC removes the email from the server (this is how I have it configured) - so the next time my phone synchronises it really does synchronise - the email is no longer on the server so it automatically deletes it from my phone too.
Likewise, when I receive an email on my phone (again) it leaves it on the server, but if I then delete the email from my phone the next time it synchronises it removes it from the server too.
This seems logical and rational, but not the way I wish it to work. I want emails to be pushed to my phone as they arrive, but for the phone not to be able to influence the server in any way. That way I can continue to use the email from my PC as normal and as before.
Is this possible?
I have "Synchronise new updates" on and "Timed synchronisation" off at the moment.

I suppose that what you want is not possible, as there is no way (as far as I know) of telling Nokia Email to synchronize only one-way (server to phone).
What you could do is set-up an extra e-mail account (in OVI, for example), and configure your other e-mail accounts to forward a copy of every e-mail to the new account.
Then you configure your phone to *only* fetch e-mail from the new "dummy" account, which will allow you to read every e-mail, and even if you delete the e-mails from there they will still be present in the "real" account(s).
The only drawback of this is that if you want to reply to an e-mail, it will appear as having being sent from the dummy account..
