If you are on GSM or EDGE, the nature of the system is it is either voice or data, not both.
So when you are on a call, the packet data connection will be held until you are done with your call, then it will be re-established.
This applies to all phones as it is a network protocol limitation, just that not all phones tell you data is suspended, i.e. Blackberry.
Only UMTS 3G and 3.5G can allow for simultaneous voice and data. I believe CDMA/EV-DO doesn't support simultaneous voice and data either but that doesn't affect the N97.

This is a limitation on the phone, not on the network or bandwidth. My Motorola A1200 ( a much older phone) had no problem running both GPRS/EDGE data and voice at the same time.
Regarding the warnings, i've turned off the audio beep from the audio, but can't get rid of the pop-ups....ANNOYING!
