N97 packet data connection on hold

Good day,I have a N97 with an unlimited data plan. But I´m having a problem, when I receive or make call or send text message my phone show this message “packet data connection on hold”, and when I finish the call or sent the text message the phone shows  “Packet data connection active”. There is any way that I can change this? I want to have my data connection always active. Thanks in advance for your help

If you are on GSM or EDGE, the nature of the system is it is either voice or data, not both.

So when you are on a call, the packet data connection will be held until you are done with your call, then it will be re-established.

This applies to all phones as it is a network protocol limitation, just that not all phones tell you data is suspended, i.e. Blackberry.

Only UMTS 3G and 3.5G can allow for simultaneous voice and data. I believe CDMA/EV-DO doesn't support simultaneous voice and data either but that doesn't affect the N97.

Re: N97 packet data connection on hold

Mouserider and radical24 thanks for your help, but I have another question, I live in Colombia and my operator works with UMTS 3G and 3.5G, but I don’t know why my N97 only works in GSM or Edge. What can I do?

you would have to go into the settings - connectivity- the first tab is network - select this and it tells you network mode, select this and you can set it to dual mode - umts or gms only mode. if your phone was made for your region and it supports the frequency that the network provides then it should work in 3g if it does not which is possible then it will only work on edge

Is there any way to turn off that notification? Having a message pop up at the start and finish of a call when you're trying to see something on the screen is a real pain.

I would also like to be able to turn off this alert. My internet is always on, and I don't need reminding.

Re: N97 packet data connection on hold

This is a limitation on the phone, not on the network or bandwidth.  My Motorola A1200 ( a much older phone) had no problem running both GPRS/EDGE data and voice at the same time.

Regarding the warnings, i've turned off the audio beep from the audio, but can't get rid of the pop-ups....ANNOYING!
