Ok, I give up. I've been trying to set up Imap (or any Mail account in general) on my N8 for over a week now and it just seems impossible to do.
I go to Programs > Mail > New, then click "Start" on the info text screen and get a message saying that a Nokia Messaging Subscription is required and that I should contact my carrier (whatever that means and for what ever reason this is necessary). Then I enter my email address and password and then the only option I get is "Mail for exchange".
I've tried the following things -- all with no luck:

Tried again today and it suddenly worked. After the tap on "Start" the subscription message did not appear and I was not asked for email adrress and password either.
Instead the screen with "Mail for Exchange" plus all the other options (Ovi, Yahoo, Gmail, ...) appeared.
I didn't do anyhting but since the setup process seems to run through Nokia's servers I guess the just weren't ready for my country yet.

HI all,
this is driving me insane:
I do not want nokia to conect to my mail server through their server and insted I love the simple e-mail client build with SMS/MMS on my all previous N series / E series, can it be done?
Have tried following:
-Mail - New:
Use the mail wizard to:
-Set up personal mail account
-Configure your corporate mail account
You need a network connection to set up
and use your mail. Typical network fees
apply.
During the activation process, your mail
address, along with technical
information, such as phone ID, may be
sent to Nokia. Nokia will not process or
store any personal identifiable
information after the activation without
your consent. See Nokia Privacy Policy at
www.nokia.com
-Start
Ovi Mail
Yahoo! Mail
Gmail
Windows Live Hotmail
Mail for Exchange
BT Internet
Other
-Other
- Mail address: (dummy data)

Mail for Exchange or POP/IMAP

I only get the "exchange" option, any one know why ?

I also loved the E series mail set up which was integrated into the MMS/SMS inbox, but that simply is not possible on the N8 as it has the new dedicated mail app, and I found out (after spending literally HOURS on the phone with Nokia Care), that it is impossible to set up working pushmail with Gmail/imap. Yahoo (which is POP) works fine - emails appear within seconds, but Gmail accounts will only update manually (i.e. open the application and manually select 'syncronise').
After spending hours on the phone with them, the verdict was that YES there is a bug with Gmail and we will have to wait until it is fixed. How long that will be??? Nobody knows!
Am now deciding whether to go back to my trusty E71 (bless its cotton socks!) and return the N8, or to hang on and wait - at least in the meantime I can use Yahoo mail!!!!!

So you're saying you managed to get your Gmail to work on the N8's Mail For Exchange?. . .and that you can see incoming messages on your homscreen widget AND you can also SEND messages through this program?
You see, I set up my "Mail for Exchange" and it worked only partially. I was able to see incoming messages on my widget, but it would not let me send a message. To send an email I'd have to go to the internet browser and do it from gmail.com
-Cheers.

Nokia N8 is one of the worst handset I have ever had... I was the one who was promoting this device to everyone before launch and after launch but this Nokia people have screwed me.. with a week of purchase my handset was continuously resta...rting for a minimum 30-40 times in a day.. I took it to care center and they flashed it but nothing worked..
Later they told they need to send the handset to Delhi Head Office, which was sent on 27th And nothing happened till now, Its just revert is going on is shown from last 4 days..
I wont entertain this kind of service, I would move towards a legal action on this as I have a Job Sheet which says Target Deadline for handset is 25th of October and today is 2nd Nov..
The customer care guys told me If you want you can go ahead with the Legal Case.. This is what Nokia is doing in India now..

Hi N0kia_N8,
have never used Mail for Exchange, my setup is direct IMAP to my Gmail, rather than through Nokia Mail servers.

Hi All
I had the exact same issue. I could not create an email account (could not connect to server) and then all I had was "mail for exchange". And I found the problem and solution. I had set my date incorrectly and my country incorrectly ... (I was too quick during setup of phone
)
Anyway I set these correctly and then you have to reboot the phone. And then I could add a mail account (with the options for gmail, yahoo etc) coming up correctly.
Hope this works for you.
BTW so far I am very impressed with my N8......
Cheers
Mark

After a great deal of frustration and many tries I've figured it out:
1. Select "Other" for the type of account
2. Give an invalid email address e.g. by dropping the top level domain i.e. foo@bar.com => foo@bar
3. You will then be allowed to choose what type of account it is, i.e. IMAP (I found that if I gave the correct email address in step 2, the only option I was offered was Exchange, which was not appropriate).
4. Configure your settings, making sure to correct the email address
5. When you are asked to accept the Ts&Cs you should now DENY them—instead of canceling your setup you should now be allowed to proceed without Nokia's servers interfering!
It's crazy that Nokia have made it so difficult/unintuitive to set up an email account that isn't hosted by one of the big providers. I support numerous small- to medium-sized businesses in Finland, where Nokia's handsets are still (though clearly not for long) the most popular smartphones, and all of them have email systems either hosted on their own servers or with a company like Nebula.fi that require nonstandard configurations. Their settings, which often included SSL certs that require exceptions and SMTP servers that don't use the same account and password to authenticate, are a nightmare to apply to Nokia's current email client software.

But still no IMAP folders on "other" accounts, only the Inbox is available...

Could you kindly give a more comprehensive description on how to configure a yahoo mail Plus account on my new Nokia N8 device? Thanks

Worst thing is that the fact that the phone does not meet the requirements you find out only when you started using it ![]()
In my case it is not clear why it is not possible to set such elementary things as incoming and outgoing server for pop connection, like it was on Nokia N95, even the iPhone can do it 4. Why I need to use some nokia server for it, do not understand.
In this case I can not use my old email on inbox.lv by pop - incoming mails are visible but outgoing email on my N8 disappears irrelevance.
Is not that stupid? After this I can say - simbian 3 sucks. Or only my N8 is rubbish.
I still can tell a lot and very - WIFI connects, Dual network settings on, touchscreen (maybe processor) and more other reacts only N8 wants to do it.
Maybe I have defective N8? What noka can say about it?

So true ! Nokia, please let me see my email folders ! Nokia could license Profimail http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=profimail and give that away free to their users !
*That* is a powerful email client, but I don't see a reason to fork over $27.99 for something Nokia should include in the first place.

I don't get your problems... On 3 differents provider (Hotmail, Ovi, Free.fr), I don't have any probs with imap sync on N8... Folders work fine...
