E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Over the last month or so, i have flashed 8x E72 with varying degress of success.

what i have found is:

  1. Retaining the user data on the phone generally causes unexplained behaviour. As a minimum, the MfE account must be deleted and recreated.
  2. If the above is not done, the Exchange activesync logs on the server run into GB each day!
  3. On 4 of the handsets, the phone runs very slow or fails to boot properly on the second reboot after the firmware update and just hangs with a white screen, necessitating a hardware reset.
  4. The same effects will occur if user data is restored from a backup.
  5. It is better to to a *#7370# reset after a firmware update on the E72 and start with a clean phone, then there seem to be no headaches.

The only bugs I have noticed after a full reset are:

  1. Signature truncation on forwarded messages.
  2. Search function still hangs if internet search is used.

Regards Jon.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Vodafone have agreed to change the phones after confirming the problems are entirely down to the Nokia software however I'm also looking at using the RoadSync product from DataViz (www.dataviz.com). So far it seems to be excellent in every way that MfE isn't. Firstly it actually works as expected; secondly it's very fast and thirdly you can actually get support for it.

Any company that can not provide suitable support or at least publish acknowledgements of known issues does not deserve our business. We have made a commitment to Nokia to the tune of 49 devices based on their literature and reputation. We have been let down dramatically as have many other contributors to this forum.

For a company that deals in communications, their own failure to communicate is lamentable. I also think that carriers need to accept some burden of blame for rushing devices onto their books without adequate testing.

Thankfully we have a way out of this, I hope the rest of you have similar good fortune.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

I do have a battery problem.  I had an e71.  I had push email configured for 5 email accounts.  Mail for exchange, yahoo mail and 3 hotmail accounts.  The battery never lasted less than 2 full days.  With the e72 I get about 4 hours.  It is so frustrating....I called Nokia customer support...their answer was to send it back to be fixed.  I purchased from Amazon, so I asked Amazon for a replacement, it arrived the next day (great service)... but the same battery life problem.  It is clearly software or firmware not a phone defect.

Any ideas.

Thank you

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Ok all, so after weeks of not being able to use Nokia's built in MFE app, I broke down and purchased RoadSync last night via the OVI Store and now my email works so good that it reminds my old E71.

I also figured out why I kept getting the "Website has sent an untrusted certificate. Accept anway? prompt every time it tried to sync even AFTER installing RoadSync. The solution was to remove my company's first certificate file that the phone accepted initially when I set up Nokia's MFE. Since my company's certificate did expire recently, coincidentally, but just got updated, the phone accepted the new certificate with no more prompts.

Regarding the battery life issue, I have encountered the problem previously too. What you need to do is to change your email synchronization to timed sync instead of always and then select a desired interval like 15min, 1hr etc. I felt the effect immediately after the change.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Hi

Yep. After a few weeks of perfect syncing with MfE my E72 suddenly started crashing/freezing again a few days ago for no explicable reason and now has gone back to long periods not syncing at all.

I've thrown in the towell with MfE and have got the free trial of Road Sync from the OVI Store (which offers a good price for the full version). Will keep posting on how this performs but am impressed so far.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

I am still using MfE hoping that it will get fixed soon. Major issue is like Garypb : it stops syncing for no reson for sometimes over a full day. It's happening maybe once every week or 10 days and usually occurs when over WLAN.

I use v22.007 with MfE & Exchange 2003

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

markilou, if I were you and needed to use your E72 for work, I'd get RoadSync by DataViz. It works flawlessly with my company's 2003 MfE. It's only $20 at the OVI Store right now as opposed to $50 directly from the developer's site. I've given up on waiting for Nokia to fix this since MfE is one of the main reasons I really wanted to use my E72.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Hi Markilou. After investing a considerable amount of time trawling other groups on the topic it seems as though other Nokia devices have had similar problems with MfE. I've come to the conclusion that this is an issue which has been ignored/swept under the carpet. I reluctantly paid c £19 for the full RoadSync license. This application works flawlessly with Exchange 2003. I have managed to integrate it fairly well in the phone. Although the inbox interface doesn't look as nice , the options for font sizes in mails are much better than in MfE making it easier to squeeze more text on the screen. Has some very nice additional features including better syncing of subfolders. My phone has now completely stopped crashing.

Am very pleased with RoadSync, but  Its been a huge nuisance to have had to invest so much effort in sorting out what appears to be a fundamental problem with MfE and am very disappointed with Nokia for not being more proactive on this. This is a massive elephant in the room for any unwitting Exchange 2003 users buying the phone. However an additional £19 was a better option for me than buying a new phone. In fact I really like the phone - it is just the MfE app which lets it down big time which is a fundamental flaw as this was the main reason I bought an E72 rather than an alternative from another manufacturer!

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

v31.023 E72 firmware released April 20 includes several MfE fixes. Might be worth a try?

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

I have E72 with 031.023.207.04 dated 31 March 10. With Server 2003 I am able to sync email & calendar but not contacts or tasks. I used PC Suite on a laptop to load the phone (works perfectly) then cleared my exchange calendar / contacts / tasks and ran manual sync. Have hard reset the phone since the hardware upgrade but am struggling to know what to try next.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

I solved this issue on my E72:

- updated device firmware to latest version

- deleted existing Mail for exchange account

- created new mail for exchange account

Hope that works for you too!

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Trying to connect to my corporate email via MfE in my Nokia E72 and it does not work. The log files under 'File manager' has the error message HTTP 401 - Unquthorized. Is this due to any certificate issue ?

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

roadsync rocks. just bought it.

it's really a shame you need a lot of extra time and a third party app to make your phone do what's in the specs of it. nokia got some software quality to improve! and customer service also.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

OVi Store Roadsync is £4 only No response from my Nokia Cust Care on my E72 MfE sync error logs and inability to work so I tried roadsync and guess what -it works brilliantly where MfE failed. So how come Dataviz can write solid code to Activesync and Nokia can't ? and Smartconnect needs the SMartconnect Rom fix to work. Both trivial to install but proof I think that the Nokia QA dept are always out.

Re: E72, MfE & Exchange 2003

Hey guys/gals, the Ovi store has RoadSync for $4.99 for a limited time. Get it now if you still need MFE. Good luck!
