E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

E71 FW 200.21.118

MFE 2.9

Exchange Server 2003

Outlook 2007

Common problem:

1) Sync from server to mobile is instantaneous but from mobile to server takes a long time.

Contact Sync problems:

1) If you edit lable of the number in mobile, it does not get synced to the server. For e.g., add a new number in existing contact and edit label to a different name like from 'Mobile' to 'Fancy Mobile', this number will not get synced to the server.

Calendar Sync problems:

1) Anniversary entry created in mobile will get synced to the server but will not show in Outlook 'Calendar View' but can be viewed in 'All Appointments'. Maybe it is Outlook bug because this entry don't have Start/End time and Outlook prefers not to show in the calendar view.

2) Meeting entry created in mobile when checked from Outlook opens with a different mode which is asking you to enter 'To' field to send the meeting request to. This is because you are automatically added as an attendant by default. (Not a big hassle actually).

3) Memo type entry created in mobile when checked from Outlook is an All Day Event which behaves like Appointment Request where you are automatically added as an attendant.

4) All day event created from Outlook gets displayed in mobile calendar as a long column spanning vertically from 0000 to 2359 hrs (unlike Memo type that is created in itself).

Notes Sync:

No option in MFE to sync Notes yet. PCSuite does.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

More on Contact Sync Issue

I used to sync E71 contacts as follows -

E71 <--PCSuite--> Outlook2007 <--> Exchange2003

Several of numbers synced between E71 and Outlook under category 'Other'. The 'Other' category numbers synced with Exchange2003. Then I changed my sync as follows -

E71 <--MFE--> Exchange2003

Outlook <---> Exchange2003

To do that, and to save from multiple copies in E71, I had to selecte 'Delete from mobile for initial sync'. Unfortunately those numbers in category 'Other' that were in Exchange2003 did not sync with E71.

So, I did one to one testing and here are the results. I created a new contact in phone and checked how this is synced in Exchange2003.

E71 field           > Exchange field

Mobile              > Mobile

2nd Mobile        > X

Mobile (Home)   > X

Mobile (Bus)      > Business2

Telephone         > Home

Tel (Home)        > Home2

Tel (Bus)           > Business

Fax                  > X

Fax (Home)      > Home Fax

Fax (Bus)         > Business Fax

Email               > Email

Email (Home)   > Email 2

Email (Bus)      > Email 3

2nd Email         > X

'X' are not synced. So you must remember which fields gets synced when you create contacts in mobile. And REMEMBER not to create two Mobile or two Email or two Tel(Home) and so on. The innocent looking Fax and Mobile(Home) did not sync at all.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

Hi willstay,

regarding to your post, there are few comments I would like to make.

Also, there is a new development about some issues on MfE i this post /discussions/board/message?board.id=messaging&thread.id=13370&page=3

Common problem:

1) Sync from server to mobile is instantaneous but from mobile to server takes a long time.

This is probably due to the fact, that sync from mobile to server is done only during re-issuing of ping (heartbeat), which may occur once per 8 - 26 minutes (depending on situation). This is probably not due to wireless connection but due to the fact, that the MfE application is chcecking the callendar, contacts and task databases (in mobile) for changes only once per heartbeat. I can imagine that pooling the calendar, contacts and tasks database for example every minute would result in increased battery drain so this is fine.

Contact Sync problems:

1) If you edit lable of the number in mobile, it does not get synced to the server. For e.g., add a new number in existing contact and edit label to a different name like from 'Mobile' to 'Fancy Mobile', this number will not get synced to the server.

It is probably quite difficult for third party softwares to rename fields in Outlook, even Windows mobile itself is not capable of doing it. However, not a big issue thougt.

Right, this is a serious bug. Anniversary should sync as a special recuring all day event in Outlook, but it is not :-(

 2) Meeting entry created in mobile when checked from Outlook opens with a different mode which is asking you to enter 'To' field to send the meeting request to. This is because you are automatically added as an attendant by default. (Not a big hassle actually).

Didn't notice that, but maybee because I have a different language verson.

3) Memo type entry created in mobile when checked from Outlook is an All Day Event which behaves like Appointment Request where you are automatically added as an attendant.

True, and this is again a serious bug.

4) All day event created from Outlook gets displayed in mobile calendar as a long column spanning vertically from 0000 to 2359 hrs (unlike Memo type that is created in itself).

This is one of the most annoying things - due to this, when accepting a meeting request, the mobile tells you that the time is busy just because you have all day event in outlook, which look like 00:00 to 23:59 event. :-(

In my oppinion, this all day event should sync to the memo type.

Notes Sync:

No option in MFE to sync Notes yet. PCSuite does.

100% Agree, and I would love this function, maybee future version ?!

Yes you are right but what gets annoying is when you add number in an existing contact you must remeber not to add as Mobile(Home) or any other field that is already occupied. Take this scenario - I get a call from my friend from his new number. After call is over, I go to call log and try to add that number in my existing contact. Now I MUST select field that has not been used before for that contact. Say I have alrady used 'Telephone', second number in the same field type does not get synced to the server. So I must make sure I add his new number is a field type which is not yet used.

If thrid party apps cannot change field types in Outlook, they can enter the number in any other available field. Or while adding number and if phone is being synced to server, it should warn that selected field cannot be synced or that I already have another number in that selected field.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

You are right, I didn't realize that scenario - this is really annoying.

Nokia should fix it soon.

As I have sent feedback through Nokia Care yesterday, i also sent them link to this thread, so hopefully, they will do something with the field mapping.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

I have the same issue on my E65. For me the main problem is that it makes events for today not being shown on the active standby display. As, for MfE, all day events are 00:00-23:59 events, as far as 00:00 is the start of the event, it will not show on the standy screen as it is supossed to be a past event.

Nokia, you are covering of glory with your support service.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

I have a slightly different issue with MFE.

I have a large number of contacts and I am using MFE to sync between my Exchange Server 2007 account and my Nokia E72.

For some reason select contacts are not synced from the Exchange server to the phone. In fact I have 1726 contacts on the exchange account and only 1697 on the phone.

I have no idea why that is. If I create a new dummy contact it gets synced across within a few mins, it's just that some of the existing old contacts are not.

Re: E71, MFE, Exchange and Sync issues

Currently having problem with Exchange2010 and e71. It syncs e-mail and contacts (if agenda is set to not-sync)

When agenda is included it hangs on the agenda items. I have tried to change connections adn at some point it would start to sync (50, 100, 200 items) but then stops.

I changed the sync period from 6 months to 2 weeks but that doesnt help. I also changed the connection and tried Wifi, no good!

Ik hope nokia comes with an update very soon!!  Currently running 2.09.158 on my e71 firmware is version 400.21.01322-1

Please help!!
