E71 - How do I delete email headers?

I've managed to synch over 10,000 emails to my E71 and it's really struggling. The "Delete" menu only appears to have two options
a) delete on phone and server and
b) delete on phone only (header remains)
I don't want to delete the emails on the server, I want to delete them on the phone but I don't want 10,000 headers in my inbox either.
Is there a way?

Once again proving that the native Nokia email client is a ****.

Download LCG's Profimail client. It costs money but it's well worth it.

In this program, you can hide deleted messages on the phone only.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi,

How about if you simply set Retrieval amount from All to, let's say, 50? At least, I don't care to see all my older emails on my mobile, just latest ones (but still want to have them on server).

Cheers.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi, I'm facing the same problem.

Restricting retrieval to 50 items doesn't solve the issue. I've tried it. It doesn't help. :smileysad: You'll download not more than 50 _new_ messages each time.

The older headers will retain.

Does anyone from Nokia support read this? Guys, we have identified a usability bug! Help us with resolving it without buying something else. Don't let us get disappointed!

Cheers,
V.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi,

True. I just never really tought about this but now that you mentioned, checked my own device and you're right. So, this setting only affets when doing the actual retrieval ... it doesn't remove old headers :smileysad:

But tried the Nokia Email client (avail. from email.nokia.com) and there you can actually set the time you want old emails to remain on you mobile. When old ones are removed from mobile they still remain on server.

Cheers.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi again,

I'm not facing the issue anymore - after the PCSuite has hanged, my email account has disappeared. So I had to setup it once again in a more careful minesweaper manner :smileyhappy: At the monet I'm enjoing the recent thirty messages on my pocket device.

Anyway, I receive a bunch of emails every day, some of these are important, so I'd like to keep them. I didn't find any documentation on the subject except some unclear idea of copying emails to the memory card in the user manual (hard copy, Ukrainian).

I still expect a response from Nokia experts here otherwise I'll have to raise this topic elsewhere.

Cheers,
V.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi rycheman,

Thanks for the input regarding the Nokia Email Client, it might be very valueble!

Two questions arise before installing it:
- can it be seemlessly integrated into the e71's messaging without hours spent for the setup?
- what will happen to my e71's Outbox in case of standalone installation?

I would really appreciate Nokia staff to examine these.

Cheers,
V.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Hi Vadeem,

You're welcome.
My own experience of Nokia Email client is that it's fairly easy to install/setup (although there are quite many options to tune if you like) and it integrates quite nicely with Symbian OS. I've setup two different email accounts to work via Nokia Email client and both work fine.
Not sure what you mean with that E71's Outbox question, but from what I've noticed Nokia Email client doesn't seem to interfere with native email/messaging app so, nothing should happen to your Outbox.

Cheers.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

I tried setting the standard email client's download limit to 50 but when I set the "auto retrieve" option (to make it work like a Blackberry) it sets the download limit to "all" as a side effect and proceeded to sync all the emails in my gmail inbox (over 25,000 of them) causing the E71 to sieze up.

I downloaded the free trial of LCG's Profimail (on mvpeterson's recommendation) and man, what a difference! A proper product with on-line documentation too!

The standard email reader supplied with the phone is unusable (which is kind of scary given Nokia's bold positioning of the E71 as a "BlackBerry killer").

If Nokia are really expecting BlackBerry users to switch to E71 I suspect they need to think about spending more on their software division.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

I concur.

ALthough I prefer the layout and the handling of HMTL as an attachment in the native S60 Email client (over Nokia Email Beta which doesn't support Hotmail nor does it support HTML Emails), this Delete function disparity NEEDS to be changed in the firmware for ALL S60 phones and FAST!

* Ppl that wish to delete emails do so for a reason! If a user deletes then a prompt to ask the following if expected:
- Delete on Phone, or
- Delete on Phone & Server.
in no WAY would a user wish to delete the entire email off the phone just to keep the header!! So unless its a technical issue with how it deals with IMAP so that the same emails deleted on the S60 device that was already retrieved from IMAP does not get received again then there is NO excuse for this!!

Nokia, you've spent billions in R&D from IntelliSync arm of Nokia For Business and received REAL WORLD feedback from SO many prestigious clients in a corporate sector. Put it to good use and update the native client - not a new application as a 2nd party add-on. And yes folks E71/E66/E63 all use an augmented Email client from IntelliSync device software.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

I've got a new Nokia E71 and when I received emails for the first time, I read them then tried to delete the headers.

When I saw that 'headers remain', i got a bit **bleep** off and fiddled around with some functions, emptied the cache and other stuff, and the next time I turned my phone on, all the headers were gone! My email inbox was completely empty. So it definitely is possible to delete the headers from the phone and not the server, because I did it.

I then tried to repeat the process the next time, but it didn't work again, and the headers remained in my inbox, even after emptying the cache.

I haven't been able to figure out what I did the first time, but I would love to know!

Obviously there is a way to delete headers because I did it, but I can't work out how. Nokia 24 hour support need to read this link and tell us what to do.

How can we bring this discussion to their attention?

I guess we're half way there, by being in a Nokia Support discussion group but we need to make some noise.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

ok so its seems at the moment no one has found a way..

but u can try this.. i did it like this...
if ur headers too private then u can just delete the whole mailbox, and it will be gone.. and then set up a new one, if its gmail its very easy for a new setup..... then once u set up a new one, on the retrieving options just allow it to retrieve a few headers... like mine i put 5 instead of the default 30... u can delete the mailbox like this.

Open Messaging, goto Options>Settings>Email>Mailboxes. Select Gmail, click Options and select Delete.

i really hope this helps.. i know its not the solution but i manages to clear my private stuff like this..

good luck..

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

By Jove, I think I've got it.

Here's how to delete headers.

What you do is chose the email header you want to delete, press delete from phone and server - (which doesn't actually remove the email from the server anyway, so don't worry), what this does is place a little red diagonal line icon next to the selected header.

You may even see a bin icon appear and a deleting bar, but still the header remains. D'oh!

Patience people....

So, how it actually seems to work is like this. The next time you go on-line to retrieve your new emails, the bin and deleting icon flash up and clean away all the headers marked with the red icon, and all the new emails download in a fresh clean inbox. Problem solved.

Who needs 24 hour technical support when we've got us.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

People, stop farting around with the s60 email client and get a proper rich client experience with Profimail!

Be careful how you go about deleting emails from your phone!

If you use POP, then you MAYBE/CAN delete from the phone + server as POP email is not a centralised system, meaning whatever changes you make on your client, maynot be reflected back on the server - different email POP clients behave differently so it's a matter of testing.

If you use IMAP, then deleting from the phone + sever WILL DEFINITELY delete your email from the phone & sever because IMAP is a centralised system. Whatever changes you make on your client should get reflected back onto the IMAP server in realtime.

The NEW Nokia Email program (dec 08) is a far better improvement than the previous version, it now supports IMAP & IMAP folders, so give that a go if you don't like the native s60 email application, and too much of a scrooge to spend money on 3rd party applications.

However, keep in mind that eventually Nokia will look at making people 'subscribe' to the Nokia email service, which is an annual cost over & above what you already pay each month/year for your phone bill.

With profimail, it is a one-off cost and the product is so matured that it sh*ts all over BOTH Nokia email programs.

Don't get me wrong, I like Nokia, NO, I LOVE NOKIA. If Nokia were a woman I would steal her a ferrari and ask her to marry me, but it's not..... and Profimail is a far better application by far. The best email client i've used on a mobile device.

Re: E71 - How do I delete hotmail email headers?

I dont know why this topic is flagged as "solved" because the issue is still clearly there.

I thought I had fixed a work around this for myself by setting up a new catch-all googlemail (gmail) account to which my personal and work email accounts forward into and getting the phone to sync to this instead. You can happily delete as you need on the phone or login to gmail and clear everything out every now and then.

However I'm having some difficulty with the beta email client staying synched to the gmail account. I clear out the inbox in webmail but even after repeated sychronisations the client is still displaying messages from several days ago. Weird.

Re: E71 - How do I delete email headers?

Go into the actual email account and archive, or move the emails to folders other than your inbox. Then when you set automatic retreival, the old emails will disappear from your phone.

Re: E71 - How do I delete hotmail email headers?

currently evaluating E71 as replacement for our blackberrys and encountered also the problem with "delete mails on phone only" - looks like nokia is not willing to change it and refers to email.nokia.com. sorry, guys: if this will not be changed RIM wins!

profimail would be a good alternative but is not fully integrated (yet)
