Dear sir/madam

Thank you for contacting Nokia Care.

Unfortunately at the moment you cannot have a free navigation on N82. Nokia maps 3.03 are available only for the following models now:

5230 XPressMusic
5800 XPressMusic
6710 Navigator
6730 Classic
E52
E55
E72
N97 mini
X6

N97 (from 28/01 through the program on the phone itself)
6720 Classic (through software update)
N86 8MP  (through software update)

We cannot give you precise information will your phone be compatible and when it is gonna happen, but the list of compatible devices will be extended. You can check updates on  http://maps.nokia.com/explore-services/ovi-maps/downloads#/default/

If you have free trial on your phon efor 7 days, you need to open in your phone:
menu>maps>options>shop and licences>shop (if you do not have any free trail) or if you have free trail you need to go to my licence>select.

Kind regards,
Nokia Care

This is a Nokia users forum .

The question should be asked of Nokia .

But basically Nokia announced free navigation software . Instead of announcing free for some handsets   If you read Nokias original free maps the details of which phones gets the maps was their just as they sent you . So everybody did not get free .

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

After quite some evenings of trying to install free maps on my 6220c and even driving around with my car to try if it worked, I only noticed today that my phone is indeed not listed to receive free maps. Weird that Nokia always directs me to th free maps download from Ovi, and that there is only a very tiny link on that page (sometimes covered by pop-ups) to guide you to the paid maps.

In short: I was already not too happy wth the UI of this phone (I always get lost in the menus) and with latest story of the non free maps I decided: This is my last Nokia phone.

I bought Cygic maps for the moment (until this phone will break down completely, it is not the most robust phone Nokia ever developed ) and my next phone will be another brand....probably an Apple.

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

This is because the N82 is using old outdated software (s60v3FP1), and not to mention that its hardware is not up to par with current phones (yes it does have 5mp cam and xenon flash, but only has 336mhz proc, while more recent phones have 434Mhz). In such a case, it would take time to make the program backwards compatible. Also, it would be interesting to note that the N82 production has been discontinued and actual support for will also be, if not already, discontinued.

But the paid navigation version can work on the N82.

Why can't the free 3.03 ovi maps navigation works on my N82, but a paid 3.0 maps version does work?

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

Because the 3.03 maps software is a whole different new software designed for newer OS and was not initially designed to be compatible to older OS. kinda like asking why an app for vista does not work for Win98.

Why?

Because Nokia wants you to buy a new phone.

Here's someone who tells us that he installed OV 3.03 for E71 on N82.

So why don't just remove DRM from Ovi Maps 3.01?

If at Nokia they think it is too difficult to do edit their own code, I can post a link to a DRM-free version of Ovi Maps 3.01, which only needs to be signed. Signing a .sis file does not require any coding abilities, so why don't they do it?

Because they want us to buy new phones!

There is that, wanting us to buy new phones, but then what's wrong with buying a new phone?

Also have you considered that, when Nokia had Ovi Maps 3.01, they did not own NavTeq, and we dont know their contract with the designers of the mapping software. If the contract was a royalty fee and that the maps would be released to certain models, they cant remove DRM due to that contract. Simply removing the DRM could cause legal implications.

We cannot say for certain why Nokia does not choose to remove DRM. It could be that they just want us to buy new phones, or certain legal aspects of contracts they entered with mapping companies a few years ago. Bear in mind that even if Nokia now owns navteq, as long as that contract with navteq is valid, they can not simply remove the DRMs.

I dont even understand why people say that its easy. Yes the process of doing so is easy, but they have never considered the inner workings of the business and legal world and how things are done.

Not to mention the fact that they do not have any obligation to give you free maps. They never said you will get free maps one day when you bought the phone. They arent even obliged to give your firmware updates if you think about it.

The fact that I got mine less than one year ago, and it was pretty expensive.

  Nokia acquired NavTeq in 2007.

If they say "Free Maps for everyone" (as they do), they do have obligations. They shoud have announced "Free Maps for everyone buying a new phone" if they did not want obligations.

They are obliged to give me firmware updates too, if the firmware installed on the phone I buy as working does not work properly, or next time I will feel obliged to buy from a competitor.

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

Actually, the ad that got to my email was "Free Navigation on your Nokia phone", not "free maps to everyone". Could you provide me a link to that ad you are saying?

Nokia acquired NavTeq in 2007, but from what I know, the maps application was going on before that. And there was another company that provided the maps apart from Navteq then. And even if they own the company, keeping it as a separate entity still entails treating it as a separate entity. Contracts still exist between them, and Nokia still pays Navteq the company for maps usage. An example would be a company here in my country. They own a television studio, and the power distribution. The TV studio still pays for electricity. This is because even if Nokia is the major stockholder, note that there are other members and part owners of Navteq who are not in any way affiliated with Nokia, which is another reason they simply cant waive DRM.

The newer phones , even with the cheaper 5230, 5530, are in fact a bit overpriced as the pricing has taken into consideration that they would be providing maps for these phones. Which means for every new phone you buy which is Ovi maps 3.03 capable, you also paid for a lifetime license of Navigation. Kinda like Nokia's way of keeping the nonNokia personnel of navteq earning. Older phones like n82, n95, did not have this consideration, so I guess a 10 euro fee is just fair. In fact I believe it is E71 users who have a reason to gripe.

The firmware updates are to keep the people happy when what they release is to an extent faulty. But if they dont want to bother, they can just not release firmware if they want to. They are not obliged. They just want to keep the noisy ones happy. A lot of people do not experience any trouble with their phone even if others do.

The statement "Free Navigation on your Nokia phone" implies that ALL Nokia phones should be supported, still only the newer ones are...

And I can just not buy from Nokia again...

They are obliged to release firmware if they want customers not to buy from competitors.

Don't feel bad. It's quite obvious what they are doing.
Similarly the E71/E72 and E63 are very similar hardware-wise, but not all of those will get free voice navigation.
Nokia want you to buy a newer or higher-end phone. It has nothing to do with technical limitations.

The statement "Free Navigation on Your Nokia phone" does not mean for all Nokia phones when in the very add less than two inches away is a list of compatible phones.

So why didn't they write "Free Navigation on Your COMPATIBLE Nokia phone" ? Was it that difficult?

If you argue like that, it would be a difference of opinion. Advertisers are taught to use the most eye-catching ad they could think of. This was the result. What they didnt count on was the fact majority of their users would not have the sense to read beyond the headline. Much like how many people dont have the sense to read the user manual, which is true for anything which has user manuals.

Would you find it fair if TomTom advertised something like that:

"Free Navigation on your TomTom device* "

.

..

...

....

.....

......

* Navigation will be free after you've paid your license

?

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

This I wrote in the "Nokia E71 and E66 get free navigation, today" thread but it fits this one as well. So here it is. (Yes I know that the 1 year licens is €10 now).

This "news" is really a slap in the face to us N82/N95 owners who also runs S60 3.1.

If Nokia from the very beginning told us that "Sorry folks, if U got an older phone you don´t be able to get the free navigation Ovi Maps" then my reaction would be, ok that´s life.

But when you read things like

Ovi Maps are already available for download for 10 Nokia models, including the popular mini Nokia N97, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia E72. More models are expected to be included in the coming weeks.

And everywhere on the Nokia website

-Navigation on your Nokia. For free. Forever

-Mobile navigation for everyone

-All this with only one click. And it's all free.

-Ovi Maps Free navigation on your Nokia.

You really hope that it will be free on your Nokia.

And on top of that the E66 and E71 get the Free navigation (So the limitations could´t be the software S60 3.1). Then I think me and many N82/N95 users are mildly upset.

After used five Nokia phones I don´t planning to buy a new one. Instead of spending €99.99 for 1 year navigation I put the money in a HTC android phone. Then I can spend €25-€30 on a no limit navigation software.

You spoke, we listened

http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/04/06/nokia-e71-and-e66-get-free-navigation-today/

Yeah right.

Now people say. It is a lot of coding, programming bla bla bla.... to make it work in N82/N95.

I´ll give you the solution for free. Just reduce the licens price to €0 or €0.10 for the 3.01 Ovi Maps.

Re: why some nokia 's phone can't update to the free Navigation - reply from Finland nokia

GFnn - well your argument doesnt matter, coz you dont have to pay for any licenses from Nokia to use Ovi Maps 3.03. All you need is a compatible phone.
