want to buy a nokia 500

Hi,
I'm interested in purchasing a Nokia 500 navigation system, and must say I'm a total newbie in this area, but it seems like a pretty competitive system compared to other top brands.

Anyways no matter how much I search for it on the web,I can't find any info on preinstalled UI and voice language packs, if someone could enumerate them, it'd be much appreciated.

I would also like to know how much of Romania is covered, since I live here and this particular product is not very popular around here, and I can't find any info on this either.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Re: want to buy a nokia 500

the N500 is a nice system BUT i would ask around and see what the most popular mapping system is in Romania. You'll have better luck with more accurate maps etc.

I live in Poland and bought a N500 but I have to get my maps from AutoMapa.pl luckily they have them in several languages including all of Europe and Poland...I dont think they go down to your part of the world....

anyway my suggestion would be to ask the locals and the local store what is the best system for Romania and THEN see if you can get Europe Maps included or downloaded from whatever company provides the maps for that particular unit.

Re: want to buy a nokia 500

Don't buy it, I regret buying it.

Nice equipment, but lousy route calculation, although fast,
Does hardly differentiate in different type of roads so you are getting off from the main roads, very annoying.

Sub zero support from Nokia or Navteq.

No maps update, no files for speed check points, although it has an option for setting on.

So again don't buy it

Re: want to buy a nokia 500

I got one, but I must say that there is no support at all for it, especially in Croatia - it's not even on sale here.

It seems as if it's Nokia's adventure into unknown, and as such, product that is best to be forgotten :smileysad:

I can say that there is no coverage for Croatia except for major towns, but Nokia Maps on the phone itself shows the places where N500 just shows blank screen. I really don't know where to update maps, I'll try with Nokia Map Loader, as folder structure seems to be the same.

I have 16 GB card in it, which is for music, you can connect it to car stereo via audio-cable or FM transmitter. Unfortunately, there is no playlist editor of any sort, so it's really hard to listen to what you want, when you want, and it does take a while to load all tracks on each boot-up.

Cool thing is, you can also use it as a BT car-kit, which works fine, you can also download contacts from the phone. No support for SMS, though :smileysad:

Don't buy it. The routing is bad, the touch screen does not work and if it works then it works w/o your action on it..just hate it..I should have waited till Black Friday before buying..I called nokia for refund but they say they can't refund it..they will repair it..and I have heard very bad review about Nokia repair center in Atlanta...trying to sell it but nobody wants to buy it..i guess I would loose my money on this...I used Mio earlier and it's good in East coast in USA

Re: want to buy a nokia 500

Strange I see all of the negative posts...I purchased a Nokia 500 from buy.com, and have been happy with it, has some drawbacks but generally it seems to work well. The routes are not always what I would choose, but they do get me there, and the maps are incredibly up to date, including even new turn-arounds which just opened about 6 months ago in mid-Michigan.

DON'T buy it....at least until Nokia gets serious about supporting it, which they're clearly not. I've had nothing but problems out of the box w/ things that *should* be fixable but you can't find info to save your soul.

Re: want to buy a nokia 500

There's a software update for the Nokia 500, although it is quite old (April 2008). Maybe that fixes some of the issues you've mentioned.

http://europe.nokia.com/A4577610

What's new
Version 1.0.62 Date 17.04.2008

Speedcam support
- Speedcam information along your route can be shown during the navigation.

Music playlist
- The music player stores the current selection in a default playlist.
- The music player supports the usage of playlists in m3u format. The old playlist is cleared when a new one is loaded.
- The music player shows the list of contents on startup if no titles have been previously selected.

UI-responsiveness
- Previously you had to tap a line with special accuracy to select a menu item. This is now improved and it is enough to tap a selection zone to select a menu item.

Error Corrections
- The device now supports high capacity SD-cards. Previously the device had problems in recognizing some of the high capacity SD-cards.
- Video player now supports videos which have been produced with Nokia Video Manager.
- The device now supports downloading contacts from Nokia N72.
