I have a bluetooth gps reciever to use on my 5800xm, do I have to switch off the onboard gps to use the bluetooth or do I leave both switched on

On your 5800XM there is no problem with having all five positioning methods enabled in Menu > Applications > Location > Positioning > Positioning methods - as it just grabs what's available; you may find that Assisted GPS requiring a network access point is fairly redundant if utilising Bluetooth GPS receiver however!
