Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

Route66 doesn't support upgrades/updates of their maps:
So, let's say you just bought the "Iberian Map" today and you discovered a new release of this very same map tomorrow - Sorry Pal, no update for you... Unless you buy the new release!
This information was confirmed today by the Nokia Portuguese Support Center, which also said that these uddates/upgrades are Route66's own responsability.
Be aware of this when you buy Route66 maps for your Nokia 6110 Navigator.

Kind regards,
telele

PS-I have contacted Route66 twice about this matter and had no reply until today...

Well...that is normal. If you purchase for example a map from 2006 (lets say q4 2006), you have not automatically the right to a free update to version q2 2007. you have however the right for a free update from map q4 2006 version 1.13 to map q4 2006 version 1.15 (that was the case, preinstalled maps on nokia 6110 navigator where 1.13 and could be updated to 1.15 for free, however there were just minor fixes, no new map data).
anyway, you better wait for the Western Europe with Nordics map, that will be released in a few days, now as the firmware supports it. for nearly 100 euro you get q2 2007 map with 22 countries. worth its money, compared to nearly 50 euro each country.

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

Hi laxlex and thank you for your reply.

What I meant with my post was to tell the forum what you can expect regarding updates/upgrades when buying maps from Route66 - If you look closely to their site you will not see any information about this; the same goes to Nokia's own site regarding this model and map software...
As far as I'm concerned, I will not buy anything more from the first. A question of attitude you may say, but I don't support a company that doesn't offer me a valid update policy. I'm not asking for a free solution, but to sell the whole package again and again each time you want to update is plain & pure nonsense, even from a marketing point of view.
Even when you think about buying the whole Western Europe Package for about 100 € - roughly twice the price of 2 major countries - the same still applies when you need to update, and frankly the only thing I add, is that the price of each country map is outrageous in comparison... Back in July when I bought the French and Italian maps (had Iberia factory installed) I already had noticed it - but as one cannot fit the Western Europe Maps in one Micro SD only - as you know the phone doesn't support memory cards bigger than 2 Giga Bytes - I gave up, exactly the same way I am doing now regarding Route66.
I only hope that other companies will offer a valid alternative soon, so I - and many others, I guess - may have a choice here...

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

You are wrong about the phone not supporting cards largen than 2 gb. i currently got the 8gb sandisk (micro sdhc class 4, largest card currently available), and it works since firmware 3.58.
second the western europe map fits also a 2 gb card (it actually is 1.81gb, on my old 2gb card there where 30 mb remaining).

however i understand your disappointment about the price/update policy.

there are other products already that support the internal gps antenna: nokia maps, navigon mobile, garmin mobile xt, sygic drive me...

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

I have a 4GbyteCard it works fine for me.
Its not a normal Roue66 software in the 6110NAV.
Its a special Version. Only updates with the software
Rout66Sync on the DVD. Or look here.

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

Once again, thank you very much for your reply.
I wasn't aware that Firmware 3.58 had overcame the 2Gb limitation. A pity it wasn't available since the phone's launch... What do I do with both old Micro SDs?
Now, although Route66's only occupies 1,8Gb of space, the fact is, I already have a full 2Gb with only the Iberian, French and Italian maps. It's quite commun if you use your phone intensely with mails, Outlook Synchronization, Agenda, Notes, Routes, etc. From my experience I would advise to use a 4GB Micro SD, for someone planning to buy the Western Europe Maps...
One last question:
From the suggested alternative Navigation Software & Maps, do you have a personal recommendation for me to try?

telele

You are right, 2gb cards are nearly totally filled with the western europe map, so better get 4gb or more if u want to use the phone also for pictures, movies, music...

- i tried nokia maps for 3 days, i guess it is ok, and got least bugs (you can download it for free including all maps, if you want voice navigation, you have to buy a license. however they offer a free 3-day trial, so you might try it.)
- garmin mobile xt is good to, but i think the voice navigation is not really clear, and there is one terrible bug with nokia 6110 navigator: because of the TsrAutostart.exe that gets always autostarted when the program is installed, SMS writing has a bug: if you hit the #-button, and you want to go back in lines of the written text, it selects the text instead of simply moving the cursor. however this might be fixed with a new firmware or a new garmin mobile xt version. you can manually shut down always the TSRAutoStart.exe, then the problem has gone until you reboot the phone or start garmin.
- navigon mobile hasnt got transnational navigation support, so you cant calculate a route from lets say portugal to spain. rather big disadvantage for many.
- sygic mobile is not yet officially released, i cant say something about that company. still rather unknown...
- my favorite, as it runs 100% stable now with no crash and best voice navigation with transnational navigation and no problem at all with routes of more than 4000km: onboard nokia navigator (that is in fact the soon to be released route 66 mobile 8).
and No, i am not in any kind linked to nokia or get paid for this posting. however i guess symbian smartphone navigation with inbuild gps receiver is still rather new, therefore the companies have still a lot of work to do until everything works the way it should. and nokia got the timeadvantage, they know better about there own products, therefore nokia navigator-software and nokia maps seem to work best on 6110 navigator.

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

Makes it very hard when Nokia have used Route66 to back the navigator. Now it's up to Route66 when they want to release a new map update, out of Nokia's control!

I'm in Australia using a map from Q4 2006!

Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention!

My compliments to the Forum.

Regarding my post called - Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention! - I publish the answer from Route66, that finally arrived after 15 days of wait:

Dear Sir,

Sorry for the delayed answer, but due to the holiday we received a huge amount of request and is taking a few day to update the emails back to the customers.

I kindly inform you that, the geographic database used in “Nokia 6110 Navigator” is provided by Navigation Technologies (http://www.navtech.com/) and contains up-to-date geographic data from Q4-2006.

I kindly inform you that the ROUTE 66 software that runs on the Nokia 6110 Navigator is buit-in into the phone and you can only add maps to this software from the ROUTE 66 Store directly from your phone or via ROUTE 66 Sync (the program that you will receive on a back-up DVD with the mobile phone). Note that the software that is available on our website, ROUTE 66 Mobile 7 S60 V2/3, is not the software that runs on the Nokia 6110 Navigator.

Please note that the price for a map or country group map is 49, 95 Euro and city map 9,95 Euro on the ROUTE 66 Store.

I kindly inform you that you can check the information about available maps, maps coverage, extra services and prices directly on the ROUTE 66 Store. You can access the Store by installing ROUTE 66 Sync on your computer.

Please check the map sizes for the maps that you want to add for information on the size of the memory card that you need to use in order to install the maps.

Note that you can download and purchase the maps from the ROUTE 66 Store using ROUTE 66 Sync.

Please check the attached document for information on adding maps from the ROUTE 66 Store via ROUTE 66 Sync.

Please note that the updates that are available are only software updates and do not update geographic data.

We offer our customers the possibility to update geographic data by ordering an Upgrade to a new product when a new product that contains newer geographic data is released. The upgrades are not free of charge.

The upgrade offers our customers who are already the legal owners of a ROUTE 66 product the possibility to order a new product at a lower price. This indicates that you can purchase the upgrade only if you are already the legal owner of a ROUTE 66 product.

Please note that the upgrade is not an improved version of the software.

I kindly inform you that, there is no further information available on this issue at the moment. In order to find out up-to-date information about ROUTE 66 products that will be released in the future and the supported platforms, please regularly check our web site http://www.66.com.

We are buying the map data from the best map supplier: Navigation Technologies (http://www.navteq.com/) and for the moment we didn´t received any feedback from NAVETEQ about releasing a new map with geographic update.

The geographical data used in your ROUTE 66 product is gathered and maintained by NAVTEQ (http://www.navteq.com). In case you encounter an error or omission in the data, please send your report directly to NAVTEQ through http://update.navteq.com. Please fill in 'ROUTE 66' as System Brand so that your report can be processed more efficiently. The error will then be corrected in future releases of our products. Please note that, since ROUTE 66 does not itself maintain the data, it has no direct influence on the priorities in processing the user feedback received by NAVTEQ. ROUTE 66 includes always the very latest update of the NAVTEQ data in the products at the time of release.

Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention! (Cont.)

My compliments to the Forum, once again.

Following my search/inquiry about the "Update" questions and concerns, I asked for further help to «Nokia Support Service».
You can read it below:

Thank you very much for your kind Email.

Unfortunately regarding map updates, which you say - We offer our customers the possibility to update geographic data by ordering an Upgrade to a new product when a new product that contains newer geographic data is released. The upgrades are not free of charge.
The upgrade offers our customers who are already the legal owners of a ROUTE 66 product the possibility to order a new product at a lower price.

I really couldn’t discover the option or automation for the “possibility to order the new product at a lower price”.
When I checkout from «Route66 Store» no “lower price” or discount has been done…

Once more, enlighten me in “How to Proceed”. (I want to upgrade all my maps – Iberia, France and Italy – which are 2006Q4)

Thank you.

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention! (Cont.)

good evening to everybody.
Just read here two interesting pieces of information, very interesting for me that I have tried for at least one week to understand something more on 6110 (tha I plan to buy within next week):

1) a new "all Western Europe" map for 100 € is arriving for Route 66. When?

2) it is possible to use Nokia Maps and all Nokia free maps (even if without navigation) also on 6110. But then is it possible to move from Route 66 and relevant maps to Nokia maps, AND VICEVERSA, without difficult operations or use of PC?

Hello and good afternoon to you too and the Forum.
To answer directly your questions:
1. A new version of Route66 is beeing "beta tested" already for some time. If you don't need it urgently I suggest to wait a little bit more...
2. It's possible to use Nokia Maps for free... However you have to pay for "voice guidance" if needed... I think you would be better by choosing one application in detriment of the other.
Hope this helps.

Kind regards,
telele

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention! (Cont.)

thanks for the reply. But if this all western europe map is still to come and I need at least a navigator and maps for a few countries ( Switzerland, Germany, Italy) have I no other cheaper alternative than buying every individual map at 49€ apiece?

And why do you think that it would be better to choose once for ever Route66 or Nokia Maps. One application delete the other? (sorry but I have no experience on Symbian O.S.)

Re: Route66 & Nokia 6110 Navigator - Attention! (Cont.)

Hello again pilotadd.

First of all, there's already a Western Europe Map bundle which includes 9 countries. In fact it sells for about 99,99 €, when one single European country map individually costs 49,99 €... It seems that the new version (8), updated and improved, will cost the same 99,99 € and will include 22... That's why I advised you, if you have the time, to wait a little bit more for its release.

As for the choice between Route66 and Nokia's own navigation software & maps, I just meant that I don't see the point of having 2 programs to perform exactly the same work. You can have them both working, of course, but the question is - why should you? Will you use both for any peculiar reason? I don't think so...

I hope these answers were helpful!

telele

In my answer to pilotadd, i wrote:

I meant not 9 countries but 9 maps. Sorry for the misstyping. In fact the 9 maps are equivalent to 22 countries; the same goes for some individual maps that contain more than one country.

Goodnight pilotadd.

I hope you don't get lost and find your way with the Nokia 6110 Navigator. :-))

Nevertheless let me clarify:
The actual version (7) of Route66's Western Europe Map, for 99,99€, already has 9 maps, which include a total of 22 countries. Unfortunatelly when updating, they charge you the whole package again - which basically means - spending another 99,99€.
As a new (updated/upgraded) version (8) is expected to be released soon, I did advise you, if you could wait, to buy this last version (8) and not the actual one (7).
