Before I went to Spain I downloaded the maps of a part of spain and switched of automatic connection to the internet (Allways ask). For the determination of the location only the internal gps is switched on. I don't want any roaming connection to internet during my stay in spain.
Starting OVI maps pops-up immediately the question for a connection to GPRS which I canceled.
It is, if a connection is made to GPS, possible to find my possition but finding a route to a address doesn't work. All I get is the question to connect to GPRS and if I canceled that nothing happens, in other words it was not possible to search for a location / planning a route.
Do I something wrong or is this standard behaviour of OVI maps?
Kind regards,
Barend

pretty standard for maps,
I think offline searching is possible but as the internal database is limited you need to get the addresses in exactly the right format,

I believe that the best way to do offline search is to not use puctuation and spaces , ie LS13 4GB
should be typed ls134gb, I know it takes longer to lock without AGPS but once you have given the phone long enough to get a lock I would have thought it would work fine for navigation, the directions are on your phone anyway and it should have been able to find the route on the map. Just one thing I read somewhere (and it could well have been here) but to navigate parts of spain I believe you need to install part of north africa as well as part of southern spain is built into those maps, Algiers I believe !
Anyway I'm going to the algarve in a few weeks and I'll try it myself !

Hi picturplaza
There is a definitely a hole in mapping data between Fuengirola and Marbella if Europe downloaded, unless OVI Maps is set to "Online" to download the missing detail unfortunately as per screenshot:http://i29.tinypic.com/ao54ir.jpg

For information: If a gps connection was made, which is hard to get even under the blue sky of Spain, I could find the location where I was complete with all details. (Red button) I had downloaded the maps of Spain / Andalusia before I went to Spain.
I have tested it again at home and yes, what ever I do, Ovi maps wants an internet connection. There are better options and I will switch to a major competitor. OS starts with an "A" ![]()
Thanks for your help anyway.

For the benefit of other users this is just advocating using Integrated GPS as the only positioning method in Menu > Applications > Location > Positioning > Positioning methods to avoid any data download cost through utilising Assisted GPS connecting to Positioning server = supl.nokia.com
