Re: Ovi Maps 3.4 available

I got Ovi Maps 3.4 installed on my N97 mini. Somehow the GPS signal bar is no where to be found on the map that you opened. What happened? Is it only me? Or nokia has removed the GPS signal bar from the map?

Re: Ovi Maps 3.4 available

Ok nevermind I just uninstalled Nokia Maps from the application manager, and then redownloaded and installed it and now it works ok. I made sure to reboot after installation and before I opened it the 2nd time I dunno if that was the problem.

Actually unistalling didn't work after the first few times it kept rebooting...I ended up reading on another site that you have to disable wifi positioning...in case anyone else has this problem this is what you do:
"Do not start OVI Maps. Go to Settings -> Phone settings -> App. settings -> Positioning -> Positioning settings

There you can uncheck wifi positioning."
After that it works fine.

At laast! I thought I am alone with this problem... I have 5800XM, v50 and has the problem that gps signal bar vanished away just a "net kb counter" stays there at the left bottom corner. :-S What's happened? (Tried to uninstall/reinstall, of course turned off this new feature - wifi/net connection - but nothing.)

According to The Symbian Blog:

  • Faster GPS fix
  • More Points of Interest
  • Better graphics performance when zooming in and out of maps, panning and tilting

I'm also getting satellite images for the first time up here in the Highlands of Scotland. Not sure if that is Ovi Maps 3.04 or the new maps.

It's a feature, not a bug. :smileyhappy:

They removed the gps signal bar intentionally.

Yes, they did  and it's confusing the heck out of many people. That GPS signal quality is now represented by the "halo" around the position dot seems to be unintuitive for a majority of people. Just another bad design decision.

Nokia is very fond of removing useful features for no good reason.

A navigation app on a smartphone that only offers a very convoluted and twisted way to search for contact addresses is a joke IMHO and a bad one at that. Even my 5 year old Tomtom Go 910 (which doubles as a BT handsfree kit) can easily search contacts addresses imported from compatible phones.

Plus as usual, installation of the release version of maps 3.04 was the usual Royal PITA in the lemon that is the N97. Took me the better part of two hours and lots of removal of apps that went to the tiny phone memory without asking. Pathetic.

Ever seen a black lemon? They turn black when they rot. My N97 is black. 'nuff said

Re: Ovi Maps 3.4 available

Why You do not new Nokia Maps 3.4 available for other mobile s60v3 Ft2 what they?
Why can not I also have a Nokia N85 on its new maps?
This is the great support from Nokia?
From now on, only what I can tell already that it will never buy Nokia in my life.
Nokia same big word for the great support and the same as lying.
why nokia 5800 has already fifth or sixth new firmware?
Nokia N85 they had barely three.
This is food for thought but unnecessarily opened and thus deceive people is a disgrace the whole society.

Actually they have a good reason.  Nokia is FAR behind the competition (Apple, Google) in terms of smartphones.  Sure they own the world for basic and feature phones, but they are scrambling to play catch up in the smart phone arena.  And to do that, they are using consumers as testers, which is where we come in.

Every single thing Nokia does right now (in both hardware and software) is a test for them, to see how the market will react.  As far as maps are concerned, they only made navigation free as an inevitable response to Google doing the same with gmaps.  So all the changes they make to ovi maps now are just tests to see how we will react.  Wait long enough, and contact searching will return to ovi maps.  Then maybe in a year or two, they'll add the ability to switch between north-up and direction of travel-up modes in the maps. :smileyhappy:

But I'm not holding my breath.  This should be a great year for Android.

Agreed.

At least for all those of us who don't like the "fruit phone" (which out of the box can't even sync Outlook tasks) nor the clunkiness of Windoze Mobile, Android seems the way to go.

Even though I don't know Adroid's desktop sync mechanism and desktop companion, it would be very hard, if not impossible for it to be worse and more frustrating then the N97/Ovi-Suite combo.

I'm afriad that after 15 years of Nokia handsets, the N97, which fails miserably as a smartphone, may be my last. At least it works as basic telephone (apart from the Nokia tune ringtone annoyance, which is more than could be said about the Nokia 6280 for instance), but for more than 500€ that simply does not cut it, IMHO.
