I've just made the upgraded and I'm very disappointed because compass is no longer supported in this new release!

Hi illbegood73,

Compass is still supported by Ovi Maps 3.03, but you need to turn it on within the application first.

For Scroll and Click devices, select 5 on the Keypad during navigation.

For Touch devices, Tap the Compass icon.

You will then need to calibrate it (hold the device in your had and rotate your rist. The compass should go from red -> amber -> green. Green is calibrated)

Umm...

Where is this calibration documented? I cannot find any help or instructions anywhere on my E72. The manuals are for the old 3.0 and are (of course) not accessible from within the app..

...but the compass works great on the E72 once I found out about its functionality in the new Maps in this thread. Thanks. (Just a bit concerned for the other two million E72/Exx users that have no idea about this thing.)

My main point perhaps is the total lack of documentation or offline help. Really a pain to go through the new version without any reference material, since everything is in a different place than before or missing...

Don't worry youself too much But on a serious note, I am sure of they nock about with Nokia Maps they will find about about it, Mine (E72) was written in the manual the phone came with. I alway have a flick through those as I tend to find out things that are new or that I didnt know about.

Yeap, thanks, the compass calibration was in the end found on the paper manual, which has a bit too many pages. Modern gadgets need to have a usable onboard help, which in this case has no mention of a compass at all. I didn't even know I had bought a phone with an onboard magnetic compass.. (And still no usable help at all for the OviMaps.. The onboard help is in a disastrous state regarding Nokia's need to stay in pace with other manufacturers.)

I've tested the compass with OviMaps now for a day or two, and it's quite unusable in my car (no magnets nearby). Calibration is almost impossible inside a car and loses it very very easily. I cannot take the phone from the holder every 15 seconds to shake it in the middle of traffic, can I. 

(In a pedestrian environment the compass is quite fun and usable, once you learn the quick ways to calibrate instead of the ridiculous-looking 8-move for 20 times..)

That's why I'm desperately missing the option to direct the map according to gps movement. This has apparently been omitted from the E72 version to make way for the compass feature. Please give it back, Nokia. The most pleasant feature of Maps is to be able to see a very wide view of the town ahead of you. Navigation database has so many routing problems here that I'm using a TomTom 730 for actual navigation if I need it. But Maps was good entertainment for me when used in a no-compass phone.

Hello,

I just upgraded to this latest version of Maps on my E52 and my compass does not work anymore.

Initially compass is white.The instant i press 5 it turns red and It doesnt turn amber or yellow or green even after hours of calibration. I get a GPS fix in about 2 mins.

I ve tried calibrating it in all possible ways(looked at video tutorials also) for almost 10 to 12 hrs.

Compass used to work previously but once i gave to Nokia Care for repair. From that day onwards it is dead.

I am unable to give it back to Nokia Care as i have moved to a country where this model is not available.

I tried everything, reinstalling the firmware,reinstalling maps,hard reset,factory settings but to no avail.

Is there any other application with which i can check if my compass is dead or alive? Any other suggestions,tips and tricks are most welcome.

Also check You don't have any magnets nearby. I f the magnetic field is strong enough (<30cm or so), the compass won't activate at all, it seems.

Thank you Chris. Perhaps your simple instructions could be placed on the Nokia website, or sent out to registered users? just a thought.
