Well said Herrig.
It's not as if the phones were bought with free mapping. All this throwing the toys out of the pram is grossly over the top. It was also perfectly clear to me that the E71 was not yet supported by the free version.
Having said that, it would be good if Nokia could make the licensing free for the existing application (but there may be legal/financial reasons this can not be done).

Having the E71 supported for free navigation doesn't need that time and efforts that Nokia is claiming in my opinion.
They could just provided the Licenses for free and that's it.
The whole thing is about marketing, Nokia would probably wait to see if the owners of E71 would pay the money to buy the E72 or whatever. Then according to statistics they will take the decision. At least it my opinion.
Anyway, time will come and we'll see.
For the E71 owners, I can understand their frustration, since the E71 was lunched long time ago when there was no OVI no apps... They waited all this time to have their phone worth it's price and now they don't get the maps, come on Nokia.

Whatever the non supported model -being an E71 or N95 - I couldn't agree more - If they had the time to THINK and Make a Markting announcement of Ovi Maps for FREE - then added the compatible only List - They sould have the time to Make O ONE TINY change to their LICENSING mode and make a free and "eternal" "drive and WALK" License available TO ALL those Excluded phones.
If Nokia thinks that like this I will buy another model from them - then THINK RIGHT - I migh now be even more keen to Look for an Android model . Until this """great"" announcement I was considering to buy another nokia - and one that would bring lots of money to Nokia (if they weren't so shortsighted) the N900. NOW - DUH DON'T THINK SO !!!!
Bye Bye Nokia ...
See you in ...... when your market share goes Bye bye around the World - and that's approaching VERY Rapidly - - - now even more

This is not a question of a few Nokia owners getting angry about free maps, it is much more than that and a fundemental issue with the Nokia view of the mobile world.
The days of restricting access to apps or selectively rolling-them out is long gone. Either make thsi stuff free - TO EVERYONE, or just don't bother at all.
You see Apple's profits are up 90% this quarter based on iphone sales. Nokia's on the other hand are. ??? (let'just say a lot, lot lower).
I had Nokia's the last 20 years, never wanted an Iphone. But if they play these games with me,and my 300 Dollar E7, I'll just go where manufactureres like Apple, Samsung, etc make my life and application easy.
I just don't have time to mess around with complex apps and licences that might or might not work today, tomorrow, next month, next year. Just give me the app free and make it easy to install and download.
Still not comments from Nokia I see ?

free maps gradually. However I believe that they should revise their website and how the free map offer is presented. As an owner of an e71 I was under the strong impression that this was available on my phone. If you visit the following link: http://www.nokia.com.au/find-products/all-phones/n27-Jan-2010 03:57 AM
The point as stated before is very simple . The line on the Nokia website ( I have seen these two again and I am sure all the regional websites are the same)
"FREE NAVIGATION ON YOUR NOKIA. FOREVER."
Why dont they mention on select models only on the main page if it is not free for all. I personally feel the marketing gimmick is in very bad taste and I personally have sworn of buying Nokia again.
Also I tried the google maps which in New Delhi, India are very much more detailed and comprehensive. Thumbs down Nokia. You just lost yourself a loyalist.

**bleeping** one's customers off is never a good idea. One only has to remember Philips, the original home video recorder people's handling of VHS and Betamax - they basically said you need to buy their new model in order to get the options offered by the oposition models.
So people did buy a new model. Only it wasn't Philips ....

You guys are lucky.
I am running Windows 7 so I can't downloads any maps at all. A "compatible computer" has to be running XP or Vista.
I can't sync my NE71 with Windows Live Calendar or Contacts or anything.
Also I do not get any useful info out of Nokia.

just tried an experiment, running two map routes on my E71.
One in Nokia maps (free with my phone), one in Google maps. While NM had a lot more detail to the mapping, GM was better overall, easier to use, quicker to navigate, more add-on’s etc. I will stick with GM even if NM become free for E71.
So Nokia can keep their restrictive licences, free maps, complex download process and Ovi Store
Anyway Nokia has pretty much had their day, they missed the whole mobile app thing (now desperately trying to catch-up with Ovi Store) now they’re missing the whole open source thing (Andriod will show them how). Ha ! they even think people want to pay $300 for a phone, which pretty soon will be almost free so long as you take some subscription to online app sites.
What a pity Nokia is so badly missing the whole maturity of mobility, they could so easily have led this instead of being market followers.
And they continue to show us how little they understand this by restricting free mapping to one of their best selling and most popular devices (E71).
These guys have so totally lost the plot.

Would be obliged if the E63 would be added to the list too...
my understanding is that these 3 models: E63-E71-E72; are all similar, no?

Install ovi suite it will fix it.
I had the same problem - I asked Nokia and they were clueless!

I had alot of trouble with GPS - it simply would not connect.
It would find the sattelites with good signal strength but would not get any signal.
I had updated to the OVI maps.
I had a break through by going to: Menu, Installations, OVI store
It told me that I needed a new version which I accepted - 5ish mb.
As soon as this was done .. bango .. all connected and the phone no longer thinks I am in Fredtikstrasse!
It now takes 10 - 15 secs to connect amd find my position.

I can't believe you guys are still discussing the "free" version after 3 pages of messages.
Mathlang got it right, on the previous page , when he said:
That Maps v3.03 will take a while to roll out to all phones is completely understandable. There are a lot of devices out there and each one will no doubt have it's own set of problems. Rolling out bit by bit therefore makes sense because it allows the support and patching teams to focus on a few devices at a time rather than the whole lot.
But what I completely don't understand is this... What on earth has that got to do with OviMaps being free?
I bought my license 2 1/2 years ago, for Maps V1 on my N95. The license carried on through all the Maps Versions, through 2,to 3.01, and, for the past few months, V 3.03 Beta.
I bought my N97 last June. It came with V 2, and on first use, it went to the Nokia website and tranferred my license from the N95 to the N97. When I updated the V 3.01 to V 3.03 Beta on the N97, it just kept transferring the existing license from version to version, from phone to phone. The license is registered to ME, as a purchaser, on the Nokia website database, not any version, not any phone.
Why doesn't Nokia just go to the License Database on the website, and edit the field covering validity to ON, or TRUE, or 1, for ALL USERS?
Then, when the phone goes to the website to check license validity, the website will just return TRUE for all users?
I've used V 3.03 in Beta form for several months on the N97, maybe since September. It's designed for the touchscreen interface, and uses a fair amount of memory .So I understand why this version might NEVER be right for my N95 - Symbian 3. But so what? V 3.01 works fine on the N95.
To make Nokia Maps free for all users, just let the license manager on the phone get a YES response from the server when it asks for validity.
It's not rocket science.

@2bad Why is the discussion still ongoing?
Simple.
There are two separate issues.
1. Nokia announcing that navigation is free.
2. Nokia providing a new version of MAPS, but not as yet for the E71.
Item 1. is one of license charges, something that can be handled separately from item 2 which is a version of MAPS which does not require separate charged for license. Nokia seems to be confusing the two.
Why? Well Nokia DOES already provide free licences for the E71, so one wonders why they do not simply provide these to existing E71 users. Immediately. Then, a some convenient time, provide the new version which is perpetually licensed.
If Nokia were to do this, existing MAPS users would feel that Nokia DOES care about them. This would engender brand loyalty. It would earn Nokia brownie points BIG TIME and would not cost them anything.
It would be the intelligent thing to do!
Come on Nokia, JUST DO IT!!!

@rberns
Well summarized. I completely agree with you, Nokia is clearly deliberately playing the fool here. If they don't smarten up, well, 2bad for Nokia!
