The unassisted GPS 'reception' on my phone is slow (2-3 min) but very consistent. Once it locks in it is OK. I faintly remember; maybe my first attempt was also very long - not sure though. Maybe the phone remembers your location after the first time - this would make sense! - and it could calculate the location faster.
I will test this theory later this year when I go to Ireland! If the phone remember its general (home) location - it will sure have to look find itself there! With any luck I can sit on a patio and sip my Guinness while I am waiting. Assuming that darn volcano stops belching volcanic ash into the air and I can fly.

There is no compass on the E71, only on the E72.

Does this new Free Ovi 3.03 map work on a e71x too, or strictly e71 ?
I download the latest nokia_maps_3.03_10wk11_b04_s60_3.1_rom.Nocs.sis, but it won't install. It says something "device is not compatible"
Please comment

I believe it's the E71 only. AFAIK the E71x is a Feature Pack 2 phone where the E71 is FP1. So software won't necessarily be compatible between the two.
You may be able to use the FP2 version that comes up when you select the E72? Not sure if there's any hardware differences that would break it, but might be worth a try. If it doesn't work, though, you may need to reinstall firmware (or do a full reset) to get back to the previous version.

Thanks for the input.
I just tried using the download from e72 on my e71x phone. It is the same device not compatible error. Looks like I need to wait for a release that is specific for e71x.

Do you have a Bluetooth handsfree kit in the car? If so, it might not be connecting correctly, or you volume might be set too low in Bluetooth mode.

I found the same 'problem'. The phone works fine with my car's Bluetooth connection - overriding the radio, but the voice guidance will NOT. However, if I use my Bluetooth headset, it works OK. I am not sure this was an oversight or done by design.
Overall, considering that the E71 has a speakerphone, I find this a small inconvenience. Maybe Nokia will fix it some day. For now I am happy to have free voice guidance. I wonder if this is an E71 phenomena or all Nokia phones work like this - even the newer ones?

yes it does have bluetooth connectivity so if this is the problem is there any way round it or do you just turn off the bluetooth connection will give it a go .

Not true for E71!
The E71 has a built in GPS receiver. Just set Positioning Method = "Integrated GPS".
No assist needed to receive and process GPS signal.

Nop, not for my E71 mate.
Gps assisted has to be selected in order to get a good functioning gps signal, i mean the one with the green bars, not the GPS general signal (big red circles).

If your E71 is not faulty, then this is not true. All the A-GPS function does is provide an initial "quick position fix" so that the GPS module can figure out where to look for the satellites. With A-GPS switched off you will still get a gps positional fix, but it can take a lot longer to happen. In some cases you could wait ten minutes or more for a satellite lock with A-GPS off, depending on where you are and what your surroundings are like.
If you get no GPS lock at all without A-GPS, then your phone is faulty.

Not sure about that, I don't get GPS lock with Nokia Maps but do with other apps without issue.
