OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

I was amazed by this bug. This morning I started up OVI Maps (Non-BETA) on my N97 and ALL of my map data had disappeared. It is still on the E: drive (Mass Storage) of my N97, but OVI Maps just ignored it. It is now downloading map data OTA. Luckily I have an unlimited data contract, but this means that my only option is to delete all map data or more realistically delete the Cities folder and QF file, re-start Maps, exit maps and run Map Loader to re-install the map data.

This is supposed to be STABLE and GRADUATED!

WHAT HAPPENED?????

I have posted this both here and in the graduated betalabs forum in the hope that I get a response in one of the two places.

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

Hi Martin,

I've also noticed this on my N95 as well, was your workaround successful or is it still doing it?

Cheers,

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

The standard method worked (so far):

  • Delete "qf" file and "cities" folder (Usually on E: drive (Mass Storage))
  • Start Maps on your phone
  • Once the start-up sequence is complete exit Maps
  • Connect you phone to your PC
  • Start Nokia Map Loader and install the map and voice file that you require.
  • Close Map Loader and disconnect you phone
  • Start Maps on your phone
  • You should now have your maps back

On problem I have noticed is there is no way at present to re-install maps 3 as Maps Uploader does not provide this option. It is something that was requested during beta testing a number of times. The route to re-install udring the beta phase was to downgrade to Maps 2 and then upgrade again. For this Nokia had to have Maps 2 availabel for download, but now only Maps Updater 3 is available, so this route is dead. There were licence corruption issues witnessed by some resulting from the downgrade upgrade route, but most were fine.

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

I have  the same problem. Maps 3.0 did fine on my N97 yesterday, but when i switched off and on the phone, all maps were deleted. The only solution is to re-download the maps via map loader. What is up with this, data loss?

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

Well, this thread is giving me good reasons for sticking with Maps 2.0. I had been wondering what the differences were between Ovi Maps 3.0 and Maps 2.0. Now I know<g>.

Having this sort of data loss (or loss of access) happen when away from your PC (most of the time, no?) would be very unpleasant. When do you really need those maps? Not at home.

I assume someone tried the old trick of removing and reinserting their SD Card?

Other significant differences between these supposedly similar applications?

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

No Doubt<g>. But I wonder if this problem has happened to those who have their maps installed to a micro-SD card? IOW: is this an OVI Maps problem or a storage media problem?

I think you need to pay attention ;-)

I've posted all along that the data is on the E: drive (Mass Storage) of my N97 this is not a removeable drive it's an N97 the E: drive is fixed. The F: drive is the removeable card.

I had Maps working on my N95 8Gb and had not seen this before.

Maps automatically installs to the E: drive (Mass Storage) drive on both phones. On both phones these are internal non-removeable drives.

So I'm pretty sure it isn't a "storage media problem".

Thanks for your input anyway.

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

@mbrett,

I have to try to copy the folder cities and qf file on a micro sd (we are lucky have this possibility on our N97), and the next time I will have once again the same problem, I will overwrite the folders on the 32Gb drive, If it will work it can be good.

If someone is abroad and loose the maps, I think that it will be very expansive reload the maps OTA.

@navio1973: Most excellent idea. Never thought of that. I'll try that too.

Hey guys, I can confirm I'm having the same issues here as well.

Latest version of nokia maps according to map updater, and a n97 with v11 firmware update.

Edit: I just noticed my cities directory emptied out on the last map data loss. So this time I tried zipping up the cities directory using the zip application and i got memory full. Still have 28.6gb free according to the File Manager tool, so most likely out of ram.

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

I have found a way of re-installing the latest version of OVI Maps withuot having to do a reset. Much thanks to the Symbian Guru. There is a copy of the .sis installation file at the bottom of his post Ovi Maps 3.0 Graduates From Beta With New Updates.

I used this to re-install OVI Maps and touch wood it seems to behaving better now. I followed teh following process.

  • Copy the .sys file to phone E: drive (Mass Storage)
  • Install file
  • Open File Manager on phone
  • Delete qf file and Cities fodler from the root of the E: drive (Mass Storage
  • Start OVI Maps and allow it to complete it's start-up procedure.
  • Exit OVI Maps
  • Connect Phone to PC
  • Start Nokia Map Loader (the latest version can be downloaded from www.nokia.com/maps)
  • Install your required maps and voice data you require
  • Close Nokia Map Loader and disconnect phone
  • Job Done

Issues Observed

During the install the app informed me that I was replacing Maps 2.0 with OVI Maps 3.0. had already replaced Maps 2.0 with the last beta of OVI Maps 3 and replaced that with the first non-beta of OVI Maps 3.0. Interesting (Maybe this identifies an issue with the previous update process).

Post install Nokia Map Loader did not initiall recognise my phone. I then ran Nokia Map Updater, which also did not recognise my phone. I told Map Updater to try again, at which point it found my phone and informed me I was using the latest version (which I am). I then re-ran Nokia Map Loader and it found my phone and I was then able to install themap and voice data I require.

Post completion I have noticed that OVI Maps now appears in Application Manager on my N97, which it did not before installing via this method.

Doing this has even got the Safety camera and Speed Limit Warners to work correctly on my N97.

Hi mbrett,

If you get bored with the default alert voices which are stored in .WAV format, you can substitute any other media file for them.

UK Male = g5war_037e

UK Female = g5war_035e

By the way, how do you find the N97 after upgrading from your N95 8GB?

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

It's a little frustrating that my N97 is Vodafone branded and they are not being very helpful or fast with regards to firmware updates. Love the phone though.

Is that my good running buddy by any chance?

Re: OVI Maps started Ignoring Downloaded Map Data

It is, although I'm more of a crutches buddy at the moment.....

Sprained and broke my ankle here (roughly where the people are) on June 14th whilst racing (Sportstracker sums it up really), I'm in plaster until next Wednesday afternoon and then I've another two weeks with an air cast before I can start my recovery. Quads in my right leg have really shrunk so it looks like 2-3 weeks of jogging the long sides of football pitches 2 out of every 3 days before I can start any serious training again.

Hope you're keeping well?

Alun.

Downloading Data OTA, so lots of data useage.

This should NOT happen on a full release version.

Never happened on the previous beta versions.

Exactly same taking place here close to Nokia HQ, so it's not an issue in UK version(s). Really irritating. Hope it gets fixed ASAP.
