Hi everyone,i have upgraded form a nokia e71 (which by the way i think its the best Nokia ever) to a nokia N8 and have so far been dissapointed with my Nokia N8. The camera is amazing no doubt about that but i really wanted this phone for its faster internet browsing and maps. It keeps freezing and restarting when i am using maps and its not once i have ended up lost and very frustrated. Anybody knows how to fix this problem?

Welcome to the forum!
As there exists now the possibility of your N8 utilising either one version of OVI Maps v3.04 or three versions of v3.06 (two of these pre-release from Nokia Beta Labs) please could you post what version you are using by going to "?" within OVI Maps application > About Maps > Versions?

Just a quick tip.
My N8 was also restarting when using Ovi Maps.
Initially I decreased the maximum memory use, under the maps settings to 50%, which made things worse. I then increased it to 80% and haven't had the problem since.
Not sure it's a real fix, but it's worked for me.
One other clue is that the phone only ever seemed to restart when there was no network coverage. Not very handy when you live in a rural area, but might help the developers find the problem.

Welcome to the forum!
Default value is usually 70% of memory for map data usage.
You could always set "Integrated GPS" as only positioning method to exclude network connection from the equation.

I have the same problem, when selecting GPS Integrated only, My Nokia N8 doesnt find my position and it restarted.
Is there a solution I can apply?
I leave my Nokia N8 with the provider, they just re-start the factory values, however the problem is not fixed.
I really appreciate any comment or possible solution.
Thanks in advance!

@mar7hur
Essentially N8 was never really designed to utilise Integrated GPS as sole positioning method and was always envisaged that it would be used with Assisted GPS positioning method enabled.
Ironically the E7 a similar Symbian S^3 device seems to perform a bit better in this situation, so perhaps there is slight difference in GPS antenna/size location from that of N8.
If device has been reset it could take up to 30 minutes outside away from tall buildings to re-acquire position as all ephemeris GPS data has been lost and device could be located anywhere in the world.
In similar circumstances without a data plan, I tend to use N8 whilst in car with a Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth GPS receiver but be warned that as Nokia no longer officially support use of Bluetooth GPS since OVI Maps v3.03 a number of SIRF Star III receivers are no longer compatible unfortunately.

Asperguy,
What are you talking about? Using Maps offline is the killer ap for nokia. If using it causes reboots, why own a nokia?

There is a bug with Ovi Maps on the N8, where if you chose to use network positioning, and you have no data left on your sim card's service provider, it would crash and restart.

toe,
So, Maps checks your network even if you disable it in application setings>positioning methods? (I have "integrated gps" only checked). Is this a bug in all versions of Maps? If so,when will this be fixed? I just bought my n8 and this is a deal breaker for me as I do not have a data plan. As I said in my previous post, Maps is the only reason to go with nokia and not an Android.
One other thing. Can you point me to your source of info about this bug? Thanks.

@mtrohan
If you go to Menu > Settings > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning server - do you have "No active connections" and if you tap on Server settings > supl.nokia.com - is a network access point defined or is this field missing? You can get anomalies arising if you change your SIM to a new provider; I can use mapping upon N8 without a data plan.

aspergerguy,
I have that disabled.Funny thing, my buddy has a t-mobile data plan so I inserted his sim card and got Maps working. (Actually locked gps signal pretty quickly) When it first starts up I get a conn. failed message in upper left of screen.(The usual notification area). I then reinserted my sim (no data plan) and it now works. Maybe it just needed to send some data over the network for some initialization process. Anyway, it is now working . I will post back here if something changes.
Thanks for the quick replies aspergerguy and toe.

I don't think there is any official info on the bug. But I have tested this myself on the N8. However, I am not sure if this bug is related to Symbian^3 PR1.2 or Ovi Maps.
I haven't tested this on Symbian Anna tho. I just leave Network Positioning off to be on the safe side. Assisted GPS can still be used without any issues.

Hello,
Continued restart problems. It seems to be getting worse as it has rebooted not using Ovi Maps. I am sending it to Nokia Care USA.(I live in New York). I was annoyed at the seller MobilePC for referring me to Nokia on a one week old phone.Maybe it;s better to let Nokia deal with the problem. If the seller sent me a replacement and it had the same problem I probably would be really annoyed. I hope they can fix it as I really like the design. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Thank you for the replies. I just thought I'd tell you I received my phone from Nokia USA repair center in about 1 week. They replaced the phone. It was defective. I have been using it for a week now without any problems using integrated GPS.
