Nokia Maps 3 doesn't install with Nokia Maps updater on a Nokia N78 (Vodafone branded). The instalation file is transfered to the phone, but at the end of the instalation there's an error message 114 - device not supported.
This is interesting because Nokia claims that Maps 3.0 is supported for this model...
One can find this problem had allready been reported in the beta labs forum. The answer was "it's a beta version". People even tried hard resets and still the problem didn't get solved (no need to suggest doing hard resets).
Now, Maps 3 is a final release and the problem that had been reported in beta fase is still there. This shows that Nokia put out a product knowing it would have bugs.
So, I'll use another GPS program (so many out there like Sygic, Garmin, etc), because Nokia Maps 2 maps are outdated (highways are not there, etc).

Nokia PC Connectivity Solution is installed. The Nokia Map Loader 3.0.24 (that also uses it) woks perfectly loading maps for Nokia Maps version 2.
The update does the whole thing: the model (n78) is detected and the file is transfered from the Internet and sent to the phone. One even hits install on the phone. At the end the phone says "update error" and the computer shows "device not supported" error.
Thanks for your help. Your phone is unbranded. Is Nokia Maps 3 blocked by Vodafone or not compatible with the firmware?
My phone's got the latest firmware (version 12.046) for Vodafone branded N78s. There are newer firmwares, but those are only for unbranded phones.
So is Vodafone selling a GPS phone (they advertise that feature enough) that cannot display/install the latest Navtech Maps?

Looks like the problem is not with the firmware or phone model, because the same's going on with Nokia N95 (with the latest firmware):

@djmuzi: you need the Nokia PC Connectivity Solution as this installs the cable drivers to make the program recognise your phone in PC Suite mode. Nokia PC suite also installs these drivers as part of its installation process.
for all: my advice is to visit symbian-guru.com and click on the recent article detailing Ovi Maps graduating from beta to final. in there is a link to the offline download of the Maps client for S60 3rd edition FP2 and S60 5th edition. this should work in a lot of cases.
however, you do need to have a fresh slate in order for Maps Loader 3.0 to work. only way you can do this is by using the Nokia PC Suite cleanup tool available on the website. this will install all traces of PC suite and NCCS/windows driver packages. then reinstall PC suite again, and let it find your phone. once found your phone, you should be able to operate Map Loader.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us

Tryed the offline version sis instalation file. Still doesn't install. "Update error" message.
Looks like the problem is not with the PC Suite our Connectivity, but with Nokia Maps 3 itself.
As reported, it doesn't work with some Nokia n78 and also Nokia n95 users.
Someone else reported that he lost his licence after upgrading to Nokia Maps 3. Is Nokia going to refund that person?

I have successfully installed OVI Maps 3.0 on my Orange UK branded N95-1 so can definitely confirm its compatible....
Biggest issue I had was getting the updater to install when running on my XP Home PC, repeated failures, whereas it installed 1st time on my XP Professional laptop.
Not the 1st time I've come across XP Home / Nokia utility issues.....

davo77,
The latest Vodafone firmware version is 12.046. The only way to install version 13 or better is to unbrand the phone. That means loosing the waranty!
So, looks like Vodafone makes Nokia N78 users move to other programs. I'm leaving Nokia Maps after the 90 days trying period. Good I didn't get a licence (for a program that doesn't run on the Vodafone firmware).
Use Sygic. It works great!

davo77,
Doing a search on Nokia Updates, the lastest firmware version for my N78 product code is 12.046.
So, no chance installing Nokia Maps 3.
kole,
Actually think Nokia Maps 2 is better than Sigic 7.72? Or did you mean Maps3?
Maps 2 european maps are outdated. They're not equal to Maps 3's maps.
So, there's nothing more to say about this issue but:
1. Nokia Maps 3 doesn't run on Nokia N78 branded to Vodafone, because the latest firmware available doesn't support it.
2. With it's late firmware adoption, Vodafone (a Nokia partner) ends up sending users away from Nokia to get other GPS programs.
3. A branded phone has more restrictions that just only making phonecalls with that operator. It also means the phone is worse (older firmware) or even might not work with certain programs (even if they're made by Nokia itself).
End of discussion.
