I bought a 5800 mainly because of the free navigation (and WiFi internet). I am delighted with it, but have some comments, having used Garmin, TomTom and other GPS devices.
1) The maps are excellent. It knew about a recent one-way system in my small French village.
2) It is great to be able to update maps on demand for anywhere in the world, and store them on a removable micro-SD card.
3) The French female voice is excellent, precise and concise, except that I wish she would not say "maintenant" (now) all the time - it is not needed and slightly annoying. It would be good to have an option for fewer voice instructions.
4) The speed warnings are good - a perfect match to most speed signs in France. But it would be good if instead of a warning of excessive speed, the message simply mentioned the speed limit.
5) The screen map is rather small of course, and it is not helped by the navigation bands at the top and sides (yes you can switch them off). But better use could be made of the small screen. Mini-opera is an example of an app that has an almost perfect user interface for the 5800's small screen.
6) The internal GPS unit is surprisingly sensitive, even compared to my excellent bluetooth GPS, which also works well with the 5800. But if I orient the phone horizontal, the GPS antenna is pointing down, and if I point it up, the map is upside down - a design oversight ? Surprisingly the GPS does still work with the antenna pointed down, but not quite as well. It even works when the 5800 is simply carried in my pocket while walking. I switched off A-GPS so location takes longer but is similar to other non-assisted GPS units.
7) Searching for places is excellent, and easier to use than on my Garmin nuvi, especially the ability to go to a point on the map, and the auto identification of features centered on the map is great. Finding services and favourite locations also works well. Curiously, if I am in France and search for Melbourne, it won't find it, even if I search for "Melbourne, Australia". First I have to search for Australia, then search for Melbourne. This is not a problem once you know about it, and it is amazing that I can even navigate within places on opposite sides of the world without an internet connection - eg from France find an hotel near an address in Australia.
8) The battery life is surpringly good, at least with voice navigation off and screen dimmed in walking mode. Excellent for roaming for hours around cities without getting lost, or even in the countryside, though of course not enough terrain information for serious hiking. (I would like to persuade Memory-Map to convert their Ordnance Survey mapping to Symbian now they have done that for iPhone).
Because of my need for Memory-Map for hiking, I also considered a Windows phone and an iPhone, but decided that a SIM-free 5800 was the best choice for travelling. Mapping alone is sufficient reason to buy the 5800, even if I still need a separate GPS for hiking. It is easily the best application on this phone. Bravo Nokia !

Hi!
This idea is really an evolutionary idea if it really works as reported.
I have recently upgraded OVI MAPS in my 5800 Expressmusic through OVI for INDIA. After installation it is asking charge for licence (one month and one year tariff is there). I don't understand, how Nokia MAP is free with voice instruction while licence is charged?
Thanks.

Hi vega1234
I had the same problem, but got it resolved with the help of chanchan & tangerine. I think you still have maps 3.01. You need 3.03. Go to pages 25 & 26 & read our postings on how to upgrade to 3.03.

About 3 weeks back I received a e-mail from Nokia for free navigation ????? , I check it it out but still I can only download the version I already installed the first time what means that with connecting with the navigation I still got to pay for using this program.
What I find strange is that in the e-mail I received you can see that I have the E75.
Still hoping that this also come available for my E75 before I buy a other telephone!
Maybe no Nokia anymore unfortunately afther many years of using Nokia.

I don't understand this criticism of Nokia, and I am just an ordinary user like you (5800 Express Music with free mapping). First of all, the Nokia announcement does NOT mention free navigation on your phone, the E75. Second, you bought the phone knowing there was no free navigation. And third, instead of simply asking when free mapping might become available for the E75, you THREATEN "never to buy another Nokia". Are you complaining about receiving a marketing email about a feature that clearly says it does not apply to your particular phone? Hey, everyone gets that all the time - its called advertising new products. There are always new and better products coming along soon after you buy an older product - you can't complain about progress
As I understand it, Nokia's free mapping was only decided at the end of 2009. I am grateful that Nokia have tried to offer this on previous phones, where it was not promised at the time of purchase, as well as on future phones.
As for for world-wide free maps and the software itself, I can only say that it is superb; you cannot get such a great deal from any other phone manufacturer. The alternative of Google maps, which you can also run on your Nokia, iPhone, Samsung or other with GPS, requires that you have a permanent cell data connection - a huge disadvantage compared to pre-installed maps. You should be praising Nokia for doing this, not criticising them.

Dont know if you noticed but many Nokia users are not happy with anything free or not .
One blog said E75 soon have maps .

I agree with you here when i saw the first announcement i naturally assumed it was for phones that came off the production line . I did not expect it for my 9 months old product .

hibou - Well said.
I am an N82 user and I would be delighted if my phone were chosen for free navigation but as you have stated I bought the phone before free navigation was announced.
I just think that the people complaining, should get an iphone! They will soon realise that their Nokia, with or without free navigation was a very good device.

My N97 has the latest software. I cannot install Ovi Maps with free navigation v.3.03 via my phone software updater.
First, I got the a message saying "not enough memory - delete some data" - I have 29 GIGS in mass memory and 73 MB on phone memory.
THEN I reinstalled the old version of Ovi Maps and now begins the install (nearly to the end for about 30 minutes) and NOW I get the message “download failed.” Tried it now 5 times (restart phone, etc).
When I tried to download the new map app via Ovi Suite (I have the latest version), the new Ovi Maps version does not show up at all in as an "update."
When I attempt to download the new Ovi Map app s via the web, it points me back to my N97 to download via the phone software updater (so caught in a loop).
It is forcing me to download via my phone sw updater, yet fails every time. What do I do?
PS: I always have problems like this with this stupid, expensive phone and wish that I had never purchased it and I am sick of having to come to this board to do anything with this useless POS phone!!! Thanks for listening,
A very annoyed US Customer.

Hi Growltiger,
not sure if you use Route66, but I had an email from them giving me free maps forever, I guess they are keeping up with Nokia. Perhaps contact Route66 & ask for the same deal.
