N97 GPS problem!!!!

Hi everybody,

I just bought this amazing N97 from my friend and it works very well, apart from the GPS.

I have already installed the latest software for the n97, included nokia ovi maps; I download UK maps and English voice.

I don't know if it is me who is doing something wrong but when i try to start the navigation, the service get stuck in “waiting for GPS signal". I try it inside and outside for hours but not even a small sign of connection is made. In the up right corner of the mobile, I can see the GPS symbol showing and when I click there, it says: GPS available.

Again, I don't really know if I need to do something to make the connection or it should connect itself automatically.

There is someone that can help me on this? Or do I need to send the mobile to repair?

Thank you very much for your support.

Re: N97 GPS problem!!!!

Pl. check this ..

Menu > Applications > Location and Options > Positioning settings > Positioning methods > Integrated GPS > Enable

Note that when you use Integrated GPS only.. with Maps in Offline mode (Maps > Spanner Icon > Internet > Offline..) .. no data usage takes place so there will not be any additional cost from your Operator..but the GPS Lock ( initial position finding) takes a long time that too depends upon your location and weather.. If you are surrounded by tall trees or highrise buildings and the weather is cloudy / rainy .. more time..

As against this.. changing the setting to A-GPS and Network Based GPS.. or the Online mode will make use of Packet Data that may charge dear if you are not on with an unlimited plan but the GPS Lock will be considerably quicker....

Re: N97 GPS problem!!!!

It may be GPS chip problem .. and you may have to show it at Nokia Care..

Re: N97 GPS problem!!!!

I have had the same problem with N95 and N97 GPS if there is not network service or if you are only using the integrated GPS.. As I travel to remote places in Australia where there is no network coverage this is a real annoyance. I tried for nearly an hour 1 night to get satellites using both Maps (latest maps and phone software on N97 12 months old) and while it seems to see the satellites it never registers signal strength or position. Another post I found noted noted that Google maps found satellites and recorded signals and calculated position very quickly, even when Ovi maps couldn't. I tried this with only integrated GPS as a positioning method - everything else disabled and Google maps found the satellites and gave a position within seconds. I then tried Location > GPS Data > Position > options > Satellite status and noted that it had the position and was showing satellites and signal strength straight away. I then turned off Google Maps and the positioning App and waited for the GPS symbol to disappear from the main menu (top right corner). I then tried just the positioning app and it would not get a position or signal strength even though it seemed to see the satellites. From this I deduce that either the Maps / Positioning software of Nokia is **bleep** or there is some software incompatibility - such as Google Maps having taken over the GPS and not letting Ovi Maps initiate connection with the GPS. Try using Google Maps first then while it has satellites and has given a position opening Ovi maps and getting the position then closing google maps to reduce data usage/ charges. I don't know whether this will work if you have no network coverage. I would appreciate a comment from Nokia as to why their maps/positioning program can't get a position using only the integrated GPS while Google Maps can.
