I am starting this because I posted a response in what I considered to be a relevant thread. Link To date there has been Zero responses by anyone even closeley related to Nokia,
The isue is - Why am I being asked to pay for what I understood to be a free service?
My response (including typo's) was;
After successfully installing the application, maps voice on my N95-8Gb all works well even without a data connection. However, turn-by-turn and traffic updates ask me to pay.
"Drive navigation is a premium service" asking for £5.79/30 days
"Traffic and safety is a premium service" asking for £2.09/30 days
Why am I being asked to pay for what is advertised as "Navigation on your Nokia. For free. Forever."
It strikes me that this is all a con to extract yet more money from us.
In the UK this appears to be a breach of the Trading Standards we have - advertising a free service and then attempting to charge for it.
If you have not - please post here to kee[ this thread alive untill we do.

Ovi Maps takes you where you want to be and shows you what you want see, with navigable maps for over 70 countries worldwide. All this with only one click. And it's all free. "
I followed the instructions and ended up with version 3.01 on my N95 which is trying to charge me everytime I try to use the navigation!!!
There is no official word from Nokia on any of this? If n95, 96 and in fact most smart phones are not going to be supported yet they should modify the wording on their silly silly web page so that it doesn't say 'free for everyone'. I know Finnish winter days are very very short and nights very very long BUT how STUPID can a company get to advertise like that?!!

Hi,
Currently the devices that are supported by the free client (Ovi Maps 3.03) are:
5320 XpressMusic
5800 XpressMusic
6710 Navigator
6730 Classic
E52
E55
E72
N97 mini
X6
With the N97 to be released in the coming week.
In the future, additional devices will be added to this list - I cannot advise which or when.
I am aware that there was an issue with the routing on the nokia.com site last week. We have acted to correct this and it should be that the free navigation links on www.nokia.com/maps takes you to the download page for Ovi maps 3.03 where only compatible devices are listed.

Chris,
Thank you for taking the time to answer here.
The information you have provided is a reiteration of information already available on this and other Nokia websites. I see nothing that truly addresses the issue which I will restate in an attempt to clarify the problem.
On ny N95-8Gb
In esence - why are N95 owners being discriminated against?
I saw nothing on ANY page, during the download or installation that in any way indicated or warned of limited functionality or charging. ALL the web pages state "Navigation on your Nokia. For free. Forever.".
As a Nokia owner for more than 20 years I find this absolutely disgusting.
Due to the nature of my contract I have to purchase my handset - I OWN my equipment. This abuse is about the last traw.
Google phone/Android are rapidly becoming my most likely next purchase. I expect that I am not alone in this.

The N95 is not yet compatible - where have you seen this listing?
If from http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/ma
Devices that get the free navigation state "Ovi Maps - with Free navigation"

OK. I think the picture is becoming clearer even if it is missleading.
I initialy looked at the Free Navigation on your Nokia. Forever - Ovi Maps and followed the link to Free Navigation on your Nokia. Forever - Ovi Maps which did not list the N95. There was however a link to To find Ovi Maps for other mobile devices which is a page that DOES list the N95s. That is where I got the maps I now have installed.
Upon closer inspection I am begining to see what was going on. Unfortunately, after reading the information on the first two pages all I was looking for was a 'click here to get the maps' link. I did not notice the absense of the 'free' paragraph because by then I was focused on downloading.
As the above is a likely scenario for a large number of people, does it seem unreasonable that the end user, by that stage, is no longer reading the small print?
NOWHERE at any stage did anything indicate that the application and maps were NOT the free ones. This realy ought to be rectuified as honest mistakes are infuriating a lot of people. Nokia are shooting themselves in the foot in a big way.
As for the 'not supported' nonsense about a .01 revision or whatever it is (I dont give a ****** about the number) - when will the situation be rectified for the people such as myself?
Nokia was good but I truly think it is time for a change even though I love my 95 - enough is enough.
Paul.

I have an N82 and was planning to buy a new phone in next 3-6 months - an N97 or N97 mini. or probably the next phone that Nokia releases within that timeframe.
But frankly, if Nokia is pulling this kind of tricks for their customers, I will have to look elsewhere. My next phone is going to be an Android based phone.

I've been a happy user of paid-for Navigation on an N95-1 for 2.5 years and have been very pleased with the way the app has improved up to 3.01. I appreciate that releasing new versions of apps on the back catalogue of devices does incur extra work for the test/release and support teams, but I can't help feel like others that the technical issues of releasing 3.03 on devices that already support 3.01 is not the big hurdle.
I have to presume that the issue is commercial: is someone in Nokia thinking that this is a way to get the installed base to buy new devices? If so, can I add my voice to the clamour to say that should Nokia decide not to release 3.03 on the N95, I like others will not be buying Nokia again, so any such commercial plan will most likely backfire.
Let's hope that Chris will give us some positive news soon that the back catalogue running 3.01 is going to be supported.

@nigelf If the current version functions in a paid mode (t-b-t & traffic) then why not just create a free license for everyone to d/l? Surely that would not require major investment?
My wife uses Facebook but I do not. Does anyone know of a group related to this issue? If so I will use her account to add my voice there.
Paul.

Well, it's final, Nokia is giving to the "young"(clients) and letting the old ones wonder if they still exist.
My observation of service providers in the last few years as seen a paradigm shift. To be an old client is not anymore a guarantee of good service. The motto now seems to be; come, oh new buyers and spenders of this earth and we'll provide you the dreams we created for yourself. To the old ones...well, parasites!
Let's all keep stimulating comsumerism and suck it till the earth vomit's us.
Even if we don't think it, that's the end result! But we'll all sleep well, companies and foes alike, after planting some trees and reducing the "footprint" on our latest green gadjet.
PS: Didn't quit though. I'm still waiting for a positive response from NOKIA. Yes, i have a N95.

Hi all,
Am adding my two penny worth here as an N95 owner for the past 2 years or there abouts. I've had at least a couple of previous versions of Maps on this phone with previous firmware updates. I was quite excited when I saw an Ad on facebook for the new Ovi Maps and free forever etc. It is only now that I've encountered a problem that I've realised coming here, the subtle difference in versions for different devices. It would have been much clearer if the Maps software compatability phone web checker interface had been seperate for the free version rather than serving up all the software versions from the same interface. I also think it would have been better if version 3.03 the free no license needed version was actually released as v4.0 so it was clearly different from 3.x streams for the trailing behind devices. :-p
When I got to the end of the Map Updater process and the updated maps had been transferred to the phone I got an error regarding "Cannot update licences. Missing phone info: IMSI or IMEI cannot be obtained (20)." When I started Maps on the phone I got a message about a license which it seems to have installed "Drive Europe" a 197 day licence on mine up to mid Aug 2010. It seems as though I'm ok don't know whether this has anything to do with the fact that I did have a license on an earlier version of Maps but am not sure whether all the map data transferred to the phone due to the above error. If I rerun the Map Updater it gives me the above error.
My version of Ovi Maps is v3.01 09wk44 b01

I don't understand why they can't announce a list of phones for which they plan to release free navigation. Either in the form of a free license or an upgraded Maps app. I can't believe that they don't have that info available since they surely must have a timetable of some sort for such a release.
I just don't want to be left in the dark wondering whether my N95 will be supported or not...
