Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

Hi funnynelson

I presume that you are referring to this page concerning updating software via DKU-2 cable and software wizard here:

http://europe.nokia.com/A4577610

As device uses Nokia Maps stored in "Cities" folder can you not place microSD memory card in card reader on PC and use Nokia Maploader application as for other devices?

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

From the FAQS:
Q: Does the Nokia Map Loader work with the Nokia 500?

A: The Nokia Map Loader is not compatible with the software on the Nokia 500 due to the different map data formats these two applications use.

Nokia Maploader application is not compatible with N500.
I'm also looking for a way update the maps on my N500 PND.

Hi stwum

It seems in the aim of simplicity that it only has the map data for the region of supply included, with no option to purchase additional maps unfortunately.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

I used this site to update my Auto navigator. Seemed to work fine. My navigator does not speak the street names. Any answers? Also, it came with CD that appears to have all the maps of the world (practically) on it. My device had a 2g sd card with USA and Canada maps on it. Do I just use another SD card to try and download European Maps to new SD and interchange when I need to?

If you want GPS to say street names you need to use Female Voice (TTS).

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

I was able (with a Nav 500 unit purchased in USA) to copy all the file over to a 4gb card and then copy the Europe map files into the cities directory from the CD supplied with the unit.

I can then select the Europe maps (Navi Man menu, then settigns, then mapsettings, then maps.

I can then map out a location in Europe. Seems to be decent map.

However, when I try and navigate to a another destination in Europe I get "No valid navigation licence found for this route". Worry would be that Nokia has placed some nav licence file on the card which determines what map areas the system will work with. But the supplied Cd has all regions supplied....

Sounds ominous, though perhaps once the system "sees" that its in Europe, it might work. Currently its in the middle of America and hard to test Europe fxn till xmas.....

TTS works much better in terms of voice com and commands. To load, be patient.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

Hi all,

Could this be a definite answer then? there is no way to update the maps on the Device?
To my understanding, the device was conceived to be used in the region of purchase, which makes perfect sense because it is specifically designed for navigation. It is the same thing as Garmin's navigation system. It only offers you the option the navigate in your own region. It's not like a phone for you to be able to take it from a place to another. perhaps one day they will be able to release a program like the map loader but for the N500 as they are not compatible with each other.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

I would really like to know the answer to this as well..I just received my Nokia 500, really like it to be honest - and many POIs in my area, I'm sure it'll help me find food and lodging in case of an emergency. But I'd like to bulk load a lot of new POIs... maps have been very accurate so far, and fact is in my area the streets don't change that much.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

hi luckycat,

In case you would like to add POIs in your already existing maps, with a phone, you can just click on the area and add it in your favorite. This way, you can name that location as you wish. For instance, if you would like to save your house on the map, knowing that it does not appear there but you can still the area on the map, you can just click on it and add it to your favorites or to your places, then name it 'home' for instance. Same goes for the N500. Hope that helps, let me know

cheers

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

I also have the problem of " no valid navigation license found". Bought mine was when i checked a us state to navigate to anywhere in mexico. You can not route between two maps and can only select one at a time. Like, north america Or Mexico not arizona to mexico or anything like that. Kind of sucky huh? Is there no fix to this. I want to drive to mexico! Nokia told me that if you buy from them new at there price they don't have issues like that. I don't believe that though. Does anyone not have this issue?

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

Yes - and I have done that for a few locations. But what I'd really like is more POIs. I can see some in my area, which is great, but a ton are missing... I travel a lot with the family, and the POI list is probably adequate but i'd love to load more POIs with more options.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

I have placed an order of this item and waiting for the shipment to arrive. I have the same doubt, if this device will work in Europe since I'm buying it in US. When I called Nokia cust.service, they said this device is configured to work only in US, which I don't understand the reason. Can any one confirm that if this device will work in Eurote.
Thanks.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

Nokia owns Navteq and Navteq provides maps for all other major GPS manufacturers as well. Garmin, Megellen are supposed to work on Navteq and their map data is 100% accurate, its shame on Nokia not to have their own software company not work for their own hardware.
When will Nokia grow up and provide the 100% accurate maps for Nokia 500 via Navteq and enable the features like TMC, SpeedCam in USA.
We desperately need them.

Thanks.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

On top of this, when ever I contact Nokia or Navteq about this, they seem to give vague answers or ignore the mails. This is not something which I expected from companies like Nokia and Navteq.
I don;t really understand, how Navteq can produce such an accurate and high quality maps for other devices and can;t do it for its own parent company devices.

Navteq's maps for Garmin and Megellen can give traffic, speed cam and 100% accurate maps with quick re-routing. This is soemthing Nokia also should make available for its own device Nokia 500 from its own maps software company Navteq.

I would really appreciate it if someone from Nokia/Navteq will reply to this post as soon as possible

I don't think any of Nokia's representative read these forums. So you frustration may not even be heart.
We don't know why Nokia does not provide tech support, why they don't provide accurate and quarterly updates. I guess, they don't need this market after all. There is always cell phone market, and GPS subscription to that.

Please try to search other forums. I saw few posts about unlocking Nokia GPS and putting iGo, MioPocket and even TomTom software on Nokia device.

Re: N500 MAPS UPDATE

To get TTS, you need to select the correct region. I think be default it is set to Canada (English). That does not offer TTS. So you must select United State (English). Once you do, then you should see three choices under voice skins. One Male, One Female, and One Female TTS.
