Chris,
I’m a bit puzzled over your 01.12.09 post, where you mention that you/Nokia has a difficulty reproducing the mysterious Nokia Map 3.01 “exit”, but at the same time you suggest you have a workaround. My reading into it is that for some reason Nokia has not been able to reproduce the issue AT ALL. If this is true, then there can be no workaround, because the root cause is unknown. If for example Windows is behaving erratically and someone wipes hard drive clean and does a new install, it is not a workaround, it is just brute force method on solving the problems.
As the problem was reported about two weeks ago, the users are getting a bit anxious. Sure, the Map app is not a question of life or death. At the same time one expects that the stuff in phone should work. Such a crash, mentioned in this thread is a result of the critical bug in that app, which should not have made its way into shipping product. I suspect that problem introduces itself during upgrade. It all indicates that the testing was poorly executed.
I suggest that instead of trying to catch a black cat in dark room, so to speak, Nokia should do more systematic things. It is important to log the app’s steps until the crash. It is possible only with sort of debug-version on Nokia Maps 3.01 application, which will log everything it does. Could some Symbian developer help in that matter, inside or outside of Nokia? Or how we, ordinary users in this forum could help you further?

Personally i was not able to reproduce this issue with any of the devices i have to hand (6710 N, 5800, N95 8GB, N96) however one of the guys from Maps R&D was able to replicate it. They were also able to get around the issue by reinstalling the application as was suggested.
clearly this has not worked for the majority of users (certainly i have seen no posts suggesting this) and so i have fed this back to R&D.

I cannot really comment on the testing procedure as i honestly do not know.

As said above, the reinstall of the application worked for the one case that R&D had it was felt that this should work for all cases. They are currently investigating the logs from this device to try and identify the cause and i hope to be able to update you soon.

Chris, thanks for thorough explanation. Hope that R&D guys find the solution soon.

I have reinstalled Maps V.3.01 09wk44 b01 as suggested (after completely wiping my E71 by upgrading to the latest 400.21.013 firmware).
This solved the issue of Maps crashing when selecting the Navigation settings.
So as far as I am concerned that solves the reported issue.

Same here. My E71 Ovi maps (3.0) crashes when I try settings/tools/navigation. Older version of Ovi maps(2.0) did not work with newest systemupdate (400.21.013)

Hi cbidlake!
I am facing the same problem with ovi maps. When going to settings > navigation, it chrashes. I tried to reinstall ovi maps, no luck, deleted the qf file and the /cities folder and restarted oi maps, no luck. restored to factory defaults with *#7370#, upgraded ovi maps (memory card still clean), started ovi maps to initialize the memory card, and it works. loaded the maps, it still works. restored from backup contacts, messages, bookmarks, settings, etc (without user file on phone memory), crashes again. there is something going corrupt arround there. i hope nokia will fix it soon in a quick release.
Hardware&Software Environment:
E71, 400.21.013 fw,
OVI Maps: v 3.01 09wk44 b01, Map Version: 0.1.23.110.
Thanks!

Hi JRMihai,
Great information in your post - it seems to suggest that the problem lies in the user data.
I will pass this on to R&D (it was suspected that the cause might be in the user data, this strengthens the argument)

The above (JRMihai) is pretty much what I tried - except on an N96 with the same result.
Would it help if you had some user data?

Hello cbidlake!
any news from the R&D? we are looking forward for this problem to be fixed. in the meantime, for any setting change, i will edit the qf file. is there anything we could do to help (tests, replication conditions, etc)?
pls post when u have any news... thanks...

By the way, previously I had random reboots of the phone with annoying frequency whenever Maps is running, but I put up with it because I think OVI Maps 3 is a really good navigator and its convenient having it on your phone.
However after installing this new version it reboots my N96 after only a very short time and so now Maps 3 is unusable, couple that with the fact I can't even get into the Navigation settings anymore this 3.01(32) version is simply a disaster. This is unacceptable, especially since I am paying for both Navigation and Traffic/Safety - not like some who are using the cracked version. Not to mention the cost of the phone itself.
With the previous version I tried for months with different combinations of every setting I could find, just so I could have something solid to report so it can be fixed, but to no improvement to the frequency of reboots. Now this latest version has rendered Maps useless, I really have had enough!
CBidlake, or whoever is reading this at Nokia/Ovi R&D - How can I get some REAL help with these 2 issues. I'll gladly send you my backup file so you have some user data to play with, or I'm even prepared to swap phones with you so you have a problem phone to work with. I like everyone else just want a reliable Navigator with none of these "should never have gotten through testing" issues.
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!

Same behavior here with E90(2) v.400.34.93 and Maps v.3.01 09wk44 b01, Map v.0.1.23.110.
Everytime when opening tools/settings/navigation -> Phone reboots.
Tried to find a way to send bug report thru Maps support pages. Couldn't.
Nokia this really is ridiculous!

Chris, any news from R&D?
08-Dec-2009 03:47 PM
Him,
Nothing substatial just yet - i had an update over the weekend that they may have an idea as to a work around. Unfortunately it is the problem of R&D replicating the issue (which i mentioned earlier in this thread) that appears to be delaying things.
As soon as i have more news i will let you know.
Thankyou again for you patience - and i really hope we can get somthing to you soon.
Chris
