Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

No, not at the moment as far as I'm aware. I've heard rumours that TT7 will upport this in Q1 this year, but I emailed TomTom earlier this week, and they said there's no ETA for TT7 on symbian devices.

Tomtom will not forseeably be doing any further updates for symbian, or indeed windows mobile.

I have contacted various tomtom people, not just support, and none of them will even confirm that there is a new version or update on the way.

Given the V7 for the dedicated devices has been released a long time ago, and that the last updates of any sort for symbian was Febuary 2007, its safe to say its likely Tomtom no longer support symbian.

Currently the best satnav available that supports the internal GPS is Garmin XT, however you must have the latest maps.

Copilot are releasing the new version in April or before, and Im getting a copy this week to review. There will be a very indepth review on Nokiausers.net when I am finished.

If the navigation is sound, with the features it has (free speed camera updates for one) the new version of copilot looks to be the best one for symbian yet.

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

I heard rumours some time ago, that TomTom may not be devloping for mobile platforms anymore which is a shame. More recently, I heard some things that contradicted this.

Garmin is a pretty poor piece of software IMO, the UI is awful. Not seen much of the new CoPilot, hopefully it'll be good as the latest version of Nokia Maps isn't that great either.

Garmin UI isnt great, I'll give you that. But its not bad when you ge used to it. In short, its ugly, but functional.

If you want to see what the latest copilot will offer, look here: http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/default.asp

Can I ask what you heard and where from this info about tomtom came from?

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

Just various Google searches, various people on other forums have stated that TomTom people have said "an update is coming Q1" to support internal GPS units. How much of that is factual is not my place to say :smileywink:

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

Ah, its not. Trust me, I have been looking at very many forums, and contacting anyone worth contacting. Ive seen a LOT of people claim to know things, which ultimately come to nothing.

Dont trust anything you see on forums (I say that, posting this on a forum), at least dont put any stock in it without any evidence.

Personally Ive given up on tomtom, and with this new copilot version announced, Im rather excited (sad but true).

Is there a proper release date on CoPilot 7, or just April?

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

Hi Gaz, just to let you know that i also have a nokia n95 8gb and i've sorted the problem with the internal gps vs tomtom. My tomtom is now working with the internal gps and it works perfectly fine, this is 100% true, no jokes.

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

It does work, but its a real pain.

And oddly, tomtom 6 looks very dated now, compared to some of the other symbian offerings.

I cant be bothered to mess about with starting an app and manually finding the receiver each time. I'll just use copilot or Garmin.

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

fair enough but it's better then nothing, it only takes few secs to do that...I've used the garmin previously but to be honest it wasn't that great, it was taking far to long to load any alternative directions. I find the tomtom much smoother and much more simple to use than all the other ones.

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

I have just managed to do this myself.

Installed software called GPSD then installed TomTom 6.02.

Started up the GPSD it locked onto a signal within seconds, then started up TomTom (message stated no GPS device connected) go to prefrences and show GPS status, configure, choose 'other bluetooth GPS receiver' and select BiNPDA GPS from the menu and away you go...

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

I have 6.02 BiNPDA on my N95 8gb. Do you guys have the problem where TomTom gets stuck when you rotate the phone and when a call came in ? otherwise it works well .. except for some distance calculation problem, it's a bit off..

Re: Internal GPS and TomTom

Hi All

I am new to all of this so sorry...

Just a quick question...

On the N95 8GB and the new N96 the standard nokia maps on the phone only give you turn-by-turn navigation if you pay nokia £5 a month and have a internet data package on the phone..

If i install a thrid party nav system such as tomtom or garmin will the turn-by-turn navigation work WITHOUT having to pay £5 a month and a internet data package?????

many thanks
