GPS coordinates - S60 freeware converter to UTM & OSGB coordinates

Do you want to use GPS information from your smartphone to find where you are on a conventional paper map like Ordnance Survey in UK, or IGN in France?

if so, I just finished this freeware application to allow GPS enabled phones like E90, or external GPS accessories with E61, to automatically convert GPS data from standard decimal coordinates to UTM (IGN France) and OSGB (OS United Kingdom) and also degrees-minutes-seconds. Without this it's nearly impossible to locate yourself as these maps don't have decimal coordinate lines printed on them. It's like being back in a school geography class...

The application is available here:

Down loaded the zip file but backed off - have you any views on whether or not your software will/might work with a combination of an E61i and Bluetooth TomTom MkII GPS receiver? I use TomTom for car navigation, to get me to the start, but your software sounds what I need when I get out and walk. Your software not working is not an issue, could your software upset other software?

Agree - this is for trekking with topo maps, not car navigation! I haven't tested that combination. But it is working alongside Nokia Maps, Nokia Sportstracker and Nokia GPS Data. It's a java application so is not very sophisticated nor complicated. I think it will work for you.

The latest version for download also supports MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) coordinates.

Re: GPS coordinates - S60 freeware converter to UTM & OSGB coordinates

Loaded your software to my E61i but it looks as if the TomTom GPS MkII receiver only recognises TomTom software. I will look to get an open GPS receiver. However, in the mean time, how go I remove your application?

Re: GPS coordinates - S60 freeware converter to UTM & OSGB coordinates

UTM data uses the so-called JSR-179 API to access BT hardware - your hardware GPS needs to support that. To remove the application, find the Application manager in your device folders and remove UTM data there.

Re: GPS coordinates - S60 freeware converter to UTM & OSGB coordinates

Thanks fo rthe information - however, I have looked at a number of BT GPS devices on the web and none of them mention JSR-179 API. Is it known by something else?
I have confirmed that my TomTom MkII is not locked to TomTom because I have had it communicating with SmartComGPS from www.wild-mobile.com. They say that their software is for all Symbian phones.
Any suggestions as how I identify a JSR-179 API compatible GPS receiver?

Thanks

Re: GPS coordinates - S60 freeware converter to UTM & OSGB coordinates

Hi
My last answer was a bit confusing (sorry). JSR-179 needs to be supported on the *device* side for my application to work - it's a java "feature". To be honest I don't know how the device decides whether or not to use the JSR-179 when connected to a Bluetooth GPS hardware... but there must be some standard protocol. You could try checking the Positioning settings in your Nokia E61i device - ensure Bluetooth GPS is selected there as the method to connect. Hope it works.
Good luck!

@Jassone

Welcome to the forum!

Can confirm that there are no issues installing the .jar file from the link a bit higher up the thread on N8 as per screenshot:

If you go to this link http://www.forum.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/N8-00/ you will find that JSR 179 Location API for J2ME™ 1.0.1 is included in API's for N8

If I've helped in any way, a click upon the white star at bottom right of screen would always be appreciated.

However if my answer also solves your problem clickingbelow it will benefit other users!
