6220 GPS license

I am planning to by a nokia navigator mobile (N 6210). While reviewing the mobile, I have found that nokia gives 6 months free licence for GPS.

Now the question is, what is the need of licence in GPS? Many other devices like GRAMIN, ATP etc are GPS devices and don’t need any licence. Then why it is needed in nokia?
If the licence is expired after 6 months, wouldn’t I be able to use the GPS (with GPRS or direct).

I dont know much about this, pl help me.

Re: 6220 GPS license

Firstly, you need to distinguish between GPS and the Nokia Maps software which utilises GPS.

Nobody can charge you for using GPS - the GPS system is owned by the US military, the satellites in orbit continuously transmit their location relative to the Earth and your GPS-equipped device is able to calculate its own location on Earth when it knows the location of at least three satillites.

Most sat-nav software involves an upfront cost for the software, and often costs for updates to both the software and map data. Nokia Maps simply charges the other way around - the Maps application and map data are free to download at absolutely any time, you buy the licence to use the software for route-planning and voice-guided navigation. All GPS-equipped Nokia phones now have Nokia Maps preinstalled, and in most markets have a free trial licence - which in the case of the 6210 you are considering is the six months that you mentioned.

An additional advantage over many other sat-nav softwares is that it offers flexibility - if you visit a region that you don't already have a licence for, you are not forced to pay full price for maps of that place, you can buy short term licecnes (30 and 90 days) as well as the full year licence.

I used to use software called Destinator for Windows Mobile devices, it was great software but updates where difficult to come by and the maps were often outdated when supplied, also each time they brought out a new version of the app itself they stopped supporting the other one altogether. I'm much happier with Nokia Maps.

Re: 6220 GPS license

Thanks for reply.

I couldn't understand properly. Will I have to buy two licenses, one for nokia maps application and one for maps. If I dont buy license after 6 months, can't I use GPS navigation even in my region ?

Re: 6220 GPS license

No, the Maps application is completely free as is map data.

You only NEED to buy a licence to use route-planning and voice-guided navigation, this is what your free six-month licence covers - you simply need to buy a licence after it expires if you wish to continue using route-planning and voice-guided navigation after six months.

Re: 6220 GPS license

Route planning is when you set the phone to calculate the best route from wherever you are right now to any other point within the area for which you have a licence.

Voice guided navigation helps you to follow that route by displaying it on screen and giving you vocal commands telling you which way to go.

Re: 6220 GPS license

If i dont want to use "route-planning and voice-guided navigation" & only want to find me on the map, then can I do this without license?

Like in iPhone, maps are downloaded from google maps/yahoo maps via gprs/3G/WiFi to show the position. Does nokia phones (n6210) also have this function or only nokia maps can be used ??

Re: 6220 GPS license

As I said, you only need the licence for the features described. If you don't need those, abd only need to do what you describe, then you do not require the licence.

Nokia Maps will download map data over the air like Google Maps if you don't have the relevant data installed, but you can also download national maps of most countries. to the phone, thus saving download expense.

Nokia Maps works on any S60 3rd edition or later, and a selection of earlier models.

Re: 6220 GPS license

The answer is no. You can install Tom Tom and use it witout paying Nokia Maps anything. You may be charged data charged data charges by your network if you enable AGPS.

However, it is important to understand how you are charged for using Nokia Maps.

Firstly there is no charge to use nokia maps to locate you position and to download any maps you want. So all map updates are also free.

You will however have to pay for navigation if you wish to get turn by turn instructions. There are various rates for navigation. You can buy a single country or regions (eg. western Europe) for different durations such as a week, a month, a year etc. There used to be a 3-year license but I am not sure if this is still available.

Typical costs depending on country/region for a 1 week license is around €7.99, 1 month €8.99, 1 year €79.99 and 3 years €89.99. I got the 3 year license for Western Europe and everytime I go away on holidays I might get the 1 week or 1 month license for the region I am visiting.

There could also be associated network charges if you choose to go online and use AGPS when navigating. Network charges can be avoided by pre-loading your maps to your phone using the Map Loader programme and turning AGPS off.
