I recently updated my 5800's firmware from v21 to v30.0.011 but my GPS seems to have become buggered ;/On v21, I would pick up a fairly strong signal within a minute of two but now, I can barely get connected to 3 satellites after 15-20mins. I have tested it on a clear night with my N95-2 next to it. Even though the N95-2 has a weaker reciever, it conntected to around 9 satellites within a few minutes and stayed strong, whereas my 5800 only managed three. I don;t think it is a hardware fault as the GPS worked fine on v21. I have hard resetted the device (green, red and camera when turning on) but its the same! Any help appreciated and Nokia Discussions is not Opera optimised!

I have also problems with my 5800. I bought 5800 last week primarily to use as a car navigator during my holiday in Germany. It often did not pick up GPS signal for over an hour even in outside with direct view to sun and A-GPS did not help much in that case. Accuracy was at best +/- 250 meters and more so it picked up and rerouted every road nearby but never succeeded finding correct turn or crossroad, not even a single time. Fortunately my German friend borrowed me a TomTom from and it did the job in every situation with 100% accuracy.
It was interesting to see these two navigation systems side by side in car windscreen, other performing without error while other failing miserably.
So I sent my phone to Nokia Customer Care yesterday and hope that they will find a fault.
It feels like GPS antenna is loose or GPS receiver clock is inaccurate or drifting out sometimes.
It may be also software bug but switching phone off and on did not help the situation. Not immediately at least.

Hello,
I just bought my Nokia 5800 ( great phone!) and havent done enough research yet, but perhaps the "professor"can save me sometime
!
A-GPS is not an option for me and therefore I was not getting any fix
whatever I was ( outdoors) even waiting a very long time ( using nokia maps).
Yesterday I installed Garmin mobile XT, and amazingly I got a fix in 5 minutes
( and yes, threw gps not a-gps) it was at 11:50 PM being indoors close to the window!
This afternoon I started garmin again indoors and outdoors and no fix at all no matter
how long I waited!
What's the mistery? Could that be that battery should be fully loaded (like yesterday
when i got the sattelite fix quite fast) and not half empty like today?
Is the internal GPS receiver of the 5800 than much weaker than a sirfstar3 that
makes it so much dependable on A-gps?
By the way this is my first experience with Garmin and the Symbiam OS
But I am quite experienced with other software an systems ( totmtom7 and iGo8 running on windows CE and Windows mobile for instance) and I find very interesting to see that the gps on the Nokia finds lots of sattelites, but struggles to get a fix...is this some kind of lock
or just a low perfomance gps chipset?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Beto_nl

Personally I've found the GPS response to be WAY better on Maps 3.0 than with Maps 2.0 (which is preloaded on the 5800). It gets a GPS signal faster, sees more satellites, and actually shows your approximate network-based position right after startup (which 2.0 never did for me, in Texas).
Dunno if you've upgraded to Maps 3.0 yet?

I used A-GPS and got about 32 GPRS packet data transfers in two days car trip. (I hope that roaming costs in foreign country were still less than buying real, working GPS navigator :-)
Nominal 5800 accuracy was 250m - 750m but sometimes it got near 100 meters accuracy and sometimes did not update location for nearly or over an hour.
Sometimes behaviour seemed to be quite random. Location was moving around in 100 meter jumps even if standing still. Like 5800 is trying to calculate more accurate position but the result is not better than previous guess.

Yesterday morning i was happy again;
Started Garmin XT on the 5800 inside my car and
after 5 min got a fix( and I DON'T use a-gps)! navigation went perfect en accurate.
He locks to 4 satellites and keeps it ( as long as i am outdoors).
Later in the afternoon, I tried again, in the same conditions (outdoors, clear sky, etc etc)
and no fix at all!No matter how long I waited
What a mistery. Or maybe not...maybe it got just a low-performance gps chipset
Or is it deffective?

Hello,
Indeed the GPS issue is one of the negative points of this great device. That's because
the internal gps receiver is weak and dependable on A-gps ( assisted gps)
Furthermore as I experienced gps user ( I have a standalone Gps system the Clarion map
running the latest versions of iGO8 and Tomtom7) i don't like the Nokia maps software at
all!
I disabled a-gps on my device and therefore it was a struggle to get a sattelite fix.
Anyway I decided to install the Latest version of Garmin mobile XT for Symbian S60
and it was nice to see how nicely this software works on my 5800, like a charm ( during the
rarely occasions that I got a sattelite fix)
I still prefer iGO8 than Garmin, but for a mobile(touchscreen)phone Garmin did a great job!
And then I decided to buy a compact bluetooth gps receiver! And why not?
The Nokia 5800 is so much cheaper than so many other smartphones, so
why not spend some 35 box extra to extend our gps enjoyment?
Well, here in Holland the Wireless GPS Module LD-3W costs around 35 euros
it got a sirfstarIII chipset ( 20 channels) and it works great! And to my surprise
it comes with a car battery charger that fits in my 5800 too! Another 10 euros saved!
If you dont have another GPS system and you need one, so I recommend this combination: Nokia 5800 / Garmin mobile XT for Symbian S60 and a bluetooth gps
receiver...It kicks it!
Problem solved!!!

thats it..you'll have better gps than previous ..its more like the best one...
use these settings and get fast gps tags and positioning..
first do these steps and restart your phone..
1.go to settings
2.go application settings under phone settings
3.now open positioning settings
4.there change positioning server address to supl.google.com
5.restart
