I have no problems with mine. I actually get the opposite, I'm told they can hear me very well.
I'd report it to the store so that once they get a new one in they can contact you.

Are you sure this is not a network level problem in your area?
I'm having an issue in a particular area here where I can't hear them and they can't hear me on the N82.
Just food for thought.

Although this is a relatively rare occurance.. many people have reported the microphone does not work on their handset. You'll need to go back to the retailer (Nokia if bought direct) and request a replacement.
Essentially your handset is dead on arrival. Bad luck, guys

It has been reported by many that the microphone does not work (from start at all). It happened to me, phone was as mentioned dead on arrival, tried flashing the firmware again using both NSU and flasher-3.5 but it did not help. To me it seems like a hardware error.
Someone stated that flashing the firmware might help but I have hard time believing that.
Talk about annoying..

Are you asking me?
Yes sort of solved, I was allowed to return it for a full refund from the reseller (not Nokia). Normally the customer must take a replacement phone but because they couldn't promise anything on availability of the N900 and they were out of them in stock they decided to refund me. So I was a (sort of) happy N900 owner for about 24hrs.

The microphone problem does seem to be more common than it should. If you mic isn't working, you should be able to either get a refund or a replacement handset from your retailer. Some people have had luck doing both already.
I've not yet had any problems making calls using headsets or not so it could very likely be a hardware issue on your device affecting both types of calls
Bad luck getting a dud

Same with me ... the Mic was out on my phone when I collected it on Friday. Saturday morning at the flagship in the West End they swapped it over with a smile. Very Helpful.
it just shouldn't of happened in the the first place.

I now wish I had drove 3 hours to the Chicago Flagship store to get my N900. I sent my dead-mic unit back on Tuesday after spending 2.5hrs with Nokia trying to get an RMA, according to FedEx tracking it arrived at Brightpoint/Nokia in Indiana on Wednesday. It's now Monday and the only news I've heard regarding my replacement has been an automated email sent on Saturday informing me that they had received the package.
People placing orders are having theirs shipped immediately and I have to wait while they "verify" my unit is broken? Am I being punished for being sent a faulty device? Any attempts to call Nokia end up in an endless loop of "let me transfer you, I'm going to put you on hold" and being subjected to terrible smooth jazz.
$613.13, no phone, no customer support. If I can't get a status update tomorrow I'll probably contact Mastercard and have them dispute it.

occasionally?! That's worrying..
Does it cut out during a call or simply stop working when a new call is made? Is it intermittent (cuts in and out)
Have a look at this app:
http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/recorder
See if you can use this tool to record from the mic when it appears to have stopped working.. It doesn't appear to work if the phone is in silent profile, though.. so make sure it's on general first..
If not you could be in a spot of bother.. as I understand it the guarantee is regional and you're not covered in the UK if you bought in the US.. It may mean you need to ship it back to the US.. ouch
That being said, this would be first handset I'd heard of that failed intermittently.. all the others appear to be completely dead from the start.. reboots don't seem to help those devices..
Of course it could be something really simple.. like the mute button!!

It is dead from the point of making the call. No voice sound is received. After a reboot ot works perfectly. I will grab the recorder and try it next time it happens and let you know.
Thanks for the help

scurry:
use recorder or just record a video and see if the Mic records audio, if it is only related to the telephony function that would be a firnware bug. and I would consider reflashing the device
