Nokia's price policy of the N900

Folks, in my mind the N900 is *far* too expensive. No doubt, developing such a device may swallow millions, but, for 500 Euros I get a 15" laptop or a netbook with a UMTS stick and flatrate, whereas Nokia offers a telephone with a small 3,5" display.... Being a Linux enthusiast myself I really love the idea of Maemo, but at such a high price? I really wonder whether it is not better to buy a laptop, put openSUSE Linux on it and a UMTS stick, more software, more possibilities, more apps. What would you guys say would be a reasonable price? In my mind between 350 and 400 Euros, 400 being the pain barrier.

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

Another point of view would be to compare the N900 starting price to N97 starting price.

In my opinion, having used both, the N900 at £500 is a lot better value than N97 at £500. Much more impressive device, if a little chunky.

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

couple of points here:

1.  when they announced the release of the N900 they immediately dropped the price of the N97 to not be above it.

2. i dont think that the $600+ dollars in US is a big deal...but here is why

for the general user/parent/advanced user

you get a decent camera - $200

you get a decent video recorder - $200

you get a decent audio recorder - $100

you get a decent video player - $100

you get a great pda - $150

you get a phone - $Free with activation but lets say $100

you get your sms/mms

you get your social networks integrated - need a laptop for $300

you get your mp3 player - $50

you get your full internet experience - use the laptop

you get your email - use the laptop

you get your office products (full versions will come for sure ie-word/excel/ppt) - use the laptop

you get your gaming (both new and nastalgae/emulators) - cost of psp/DS/etc with other limitations

you get your instant messangers - use the laptop

you get your gps and navigation - $200

the list can still grow.

that alone is just $1400 not including the multiple cases and accessories for each, or the bulk you would have to lug around and it is all fairly instant, in the palm of your hand and fits in your pocket.

$600 doesnt sound so bad when you actually use them...actually, it's quite a deal...oh, and free software!

if you like this, kudo it!

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

DELL is selling the product for $599.99 flat rate and if you have coupons from them like 15% off you can use it towards discounting the phone.  Also they run deals all the time for price cuts on accessories like last week they had $70 off the phone and than the $50 rebate from Nokia.

Nokia believe they can do whatever they want and charge whatever they want.  Clearly, they have never heard of market share reports, or don't believe them.  Clearly, they don't even have sales reports.

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

Just for comparison.. some SIM free / off contract phone prices

iphone 3gs = £899

http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=183742

Palm pre = £499

http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=189373

Motorola Milestone (aka European Droid) =£449

http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=190234

£499 quid for the N900 isn't that bad really.. sim-free phones are expensive.. brand new top end ones always so..

Who are Nokia trying to compete with with this device that means they should look at dropping the price?

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

I keep hearing complaints from many people about dell and amazon delays.  Walmart.com folks $578.  I ordered it on the 23rd and received it on the 24th.  Order it through walmart's link in continental.com and get 4 miles for each dollar.  Warning: Walmart.com charges sales tax.

Re: Nokia's price policy of the N900

I bought it on Nokia online and I believe it was $569.  With the added warranty and California sales tax at over 9% I paid  $678.  they waved shipping, because I already ordered one for Christmas for a present and they didn't get it here.  They blew that big time - thus the free shipping on this one.

People think I am NUTS paying this for a phone... But Blackberry's go for that - as well as iPhones if you have no contract - it's the carrier contract that gets you the deal but the N900 doesn't have one.

I should receive mine tomorrow and am pretty excited!  To me... if it is like a "mini computer" well then the price is worth it.
